Banger racing is a form of full contact motorsport where there is often awards for both the race winner and best crasher, as well as sometimes other awards including the best wrecked (driver with the most destroyed car) and special awards for unique or well presented cars. While similar in concept to demolition derby's in the USA, banger racing takes place on an oval course where the speeds are typically much higher and therefore the hits are much harder. While there are awards and sometimes small cash prizes on offer, most drivers choose to race for the thrill or to entertain the crowd rather than to make money financially. It is common to see a variety of cars on show and you'll often see manufacturers such as Ford, Mercedes, Toyota, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Nissan, Chevrolet, Volvo and many more - even some Limousines, Hearses, Vans & Caravans! Banger Racing is popular in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Holland and Belgium.

It’s a lot safer than it looks, minor injuries are common but not serious ones. The cars are built to fold to absorb the impact rather than the driver
Love it! Makes what we do here in the states look like child's play. Even our figure 8 racing is docile compared to this! Was kinda concerned with injuries but you can see the cages around the drivers in some cars. They don't allow too much reinforcing here. Find that part of how we do this inherently dumb. Then when some of the guys here do it's usually concrete filled frames. You guy got us beat in this kind of fun! Definitely saving time at the crusher.
any bad injuries ? some of these look outright shocking
Most drivers just get whiplash or a headache. But are able to walk away relatively unscathed. Dislocated and broken bones or punctured lungs are uncommon, but deaths are surprisingly rare.
The cars are stripped down of everything that isn’t the engine, 1 or 2 seats, and wheels. They become incredibly lightweight and turns the cars into one big crumple zone. This makes the collisions look much more impactful and gnarly than they actually are since there’s no internal framework apart that street legal cars have. Though rollbars are installed around the cab to protect the driver.
The engines are usually moved to where the back seats would’ve been to make the cars able to keep on driving even after ramming and getting rear-ended.

The absolute best demo derby footage I have ever witnessed. By the look of it, wild horses couldn't keep these drivers away from these events. EPIC. Cheers for posting.

most were probably a lot of work to restore i they had a chance. not impossible but just alot of parts, money and time.
An amazing array of clips. A couple of the hits looked frightening. The big American cars fortunately seem to lack speed which lessens the amount of damage they can do (they still can do some ferocious hits). Cheers from Sydney Australia (we don't have any dedicated banger racing series, just one off events unfortunately).

all these cars where for sale before they got destroyed. So all you classic car 'lovers' had the chance to buy those cars, before they went to the banger racers. But hey, your cars are worth more now 🤣. A lot of the rarer cars are way beyond restauration, they have a lot to weld to reinforce the car to be raced again. Good parts are sold to restorers, most of the time the original engines too. Most of the racers use their own engines, Ford V6 or Volvo engines.
Most classics were being raced before they were worth restoring or even considering ''Classic"
Border line manslaughter charges in a couple of these, makes our demolition derbies look whimpy.
I thought we here in the US were the hardcore demo champs.. The older cars here are a lot heavier and we have to run in a rectangle or sometimes a square. Hard to get any real speed, but a long run with a built engine could get you maybe 30-35 MPH, 40 if you get good traction. The track demo looks more fun though! Thanks for the vid!!

I don't have a problem with demo derbys or banger racing but I do have a problem with people (both in the UK and here in the US) complaining of classic cars becoming hard to find, yet the only place I see the cars they speak of is in these races being completely fucked for a thousand dollar prize, if even that much
The spectators remind me of roman times when the lion kills and eats the gladiator when some of those bangers collide

Even when a wall impact seems slower or milder, it's still often the last hit a car takes. They take and give ridiculous car-to-car strikes and often keep right on racing. What I still don't understand is why so many of them remove the front bumpers, considering the nature of the sport. And at these speeds, how critical is it to shave weight, anyway?
And stop wrecking those old American cars! We need those for demolition derby.

Is there a race going on hear, or are they just seeing who can have the biggest wreck?
From what I understand it depends on the event and also the drivers. Some events are more oriented around making laps but even in those a lot of the drivers will play hard and wreck for fun.

enduro races in the united states the idea is to make laps not wreck your car for no reason some of this dont make sense

USA: my demo derbys are the most destructive, UK: hold my pint while i show you a real demo derby.
Usually its a H frame behind the driver, floor plate, drivers door plate and roof plate which forms a sort of cage around the driver to stop the drivers area from folding. That way the rest of the car folds up to absorb the impact

It’s to complete a certain number of laps while ramming opponent drivers to cripple and incapacitate their vehicles, or being the last one standing

It is a race first to complete the laps wins. But the rules state full contact is allowed so some just go out to crash and stop other people

Hasn't been one for a fair few years I think. I've seen one person die and that was 20 years ago.

Same way you win any race, cross the line first. You get some that are there to actually race and others that are there just to smash others. But yea there is an actual race happening
First to complete the laps wins, however, full contact is not only allowed but suggested, so it's not an awful strategy to cause as much damage as possible so maybe one of your friends will win LOL
