You Bet Your Life #54-16 Leela & Lola & Herman & Harmon Loveless ('Tree', Dec 30, 1954)

- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2013
- Groucho makes mincemeat out of aspiring singer Bill Rutter, but the real highlight of this show is couple #3, two couples actually: the identical Loveless twins, and the pair of identical twins they married. Groucho gets big laughs by purposely confusing their names throughout the interview.
COUPLE #1: Bill Rutter, a Phil Silvers lookalike who wants to bankroll his own singing career / Zale Parry
COUPLE #2: Pat Cunningham / crane operator
COUPLE #3: The Loveless twins, two pairs of identical twins married to each other: Herman and Harmon & Leela and Lola

Zale Parry was/is an extremely beautiful and intelligent woman. I'm glad to know that she is still around.
English aeee!
Her smile could light up the ocean floor.
Zale Parry (still kicking as of August 2020) has had quite the life as a diver, underwater photographer, actress, stunt dive double and writer. Look her up, her life is pretty well documented. It's one of the few times that a contestant's appearance on YBYL often goes unmentioned simply because of the scale of everything else she did.
Nice 👍👍
She looks very modern here! Her face I mean, like she travelled back in time from our own day...all the other contestant look very, well, old-fashioned, even the young people.
Groucho should have given Bill Rutter a chance to sing on tv - right there!
Yeah, usually he does just that . . Not a good sign for Rutter, but it may have been lack of time in this case.
After appearing on "You Bet Your Life" my great uncles were given some West Bend fishing gear which they gave to my brother Bob and I.
This is the first time I've seen the show. After the "twins" careers in Vaudeville, my uncles became veterinarians At the time of the program they were living in Modesto and later retired in Colorado Springs. They never had children because they "didn't want to break up the set" and they all live together until their deaths.
They had two brothers. My grandfather Harry (the oldest) was a chiropractor in Midland, Texas and the youngest, William (Bill) was also a chiropractor in the Silver Lake/Hollywood area of Los Angeles. Uncle Bill loved to tell us stories about the actors and actresses he treated.
P.S. I have a cousin, Martha, that will have identical twin boys this May 2015 :-)
Home Showcase Wow!!! Herman and Harmon were your uncles? I'm so glad you finally had a chance to see this. How great to get a comment from a relative-- thanks for the info on your family. All four of them came off as truly delightful, charming people in this program.
Home Showcase - That's a really cool story. There are some good RUclips video downloaders online. You should download this episode for your family archives.

You mean they never ate meat?
Thx! I love when family updates us!!
WOW, She went diving with Jacques Cousteau ! 😲
pleased to see the grand prize won ... $4,200 was the annual income in the states back in '54 so 3 years pay!
I am hooked….love❤this show 😂
Surprised Groucho did not ask the man to sing. The show nearly always has would be singers give a sample.
Something Groucho said at the end made me think that perhaps he did sing. Maybe his talent was such that they felt they should cut it out rather than embarrass him. But he was such a nice man
And they were running out of time with 4 couples!
He wasn't a big time professional
Groucho, you’re still the greatest
3 years later, Zale Parry appeared in at least 8 episodes of "Sea Hunt". She also did stunts for "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", as well as for "Sea Hunt". Her husband, Parry Bivens, was technical advisor for "Sea Hunt". He died in 1963, but I believe Zale is still alive. They were both known to experiment with the then-unknown drug LSD.
Thanks again for all the great info on the guests, Jimmie. I don't know how you dig this stuff up. Your googling skills impress me. The only comment you've made yet where I'd already been aware of the info was on the Olympic swimmer Sammy Lee, but only because I had to look him up when I was writing up the show description!
I've seen all 155 episodes of Sea Hunt, so I was very excited to see that Zale was a guest on You Bet Your Life. She behaved a little goofy, I thought. Maybe she dropped some acid for the show. Who knows?
Awesome, Jimmie Dee, thank you i love these updates
Dated, 7 years ago, she's now 88
The Los Angeles Times had Patrick Cunningham's January 2012 obit describing him as "colorful" and said he "...gained acclaim fighting bulls in the 1950s."
So entertaining and amusing thanks to Groucho great wit! I bet a lot of his hilarious lines in the Marx Bros movies were ad libs!
"We're going diving tomorrow!" 👀👀 classic Groucho!
I get panicky when the barber puts my head in the sink for a shampoo.
Zale is gorgeous!!
You're pretty good looking yourself
Those twins all live in the same house n have one car smh damn
Wasn't uncommon back then, hugh shortage of homes!
That whole situation with the two sets of twins was just plain odd!
weirdo's
It wasn't odd back then!
Great show!
Bet my life... Groucho is laughing from above. 🌲. 12/2021
Zale îs so beautiful.
the Loveless twins were a little spooky---especially living together and all!
Great videos. Thanks for doing this.
Back in the 50s it was common for people to live together, hugh shortage of homes!
Why do the men and, especially the women, all look older than their age on these shows? The first guy said he was 28. I would have guessed he was at least 45.
its the hairstyles and outfits.
They may have been smokers
The very conservative Fifties.
Round about high school, everything becomes preppy. Guys dress like their fathers (suits, ties, sweaters, brill cream) and girls their mothers.
Notice how every contestant is asked if they're married and most are asked if they have children? That's what was expected, a spouse, a job, a home, children, a car, in a neighbourhood with trees and parks and good schools and friendly neighbours who looked like you. All those modern stereotypes about women homemakers and men breadwinners come from this time period. It's why there's nervous, self-conscious laughter from the audience at unusual occupations. A great many people wanted suburban normalcy after the war, easily defined gender roles and "traditional" values.
And that's what their children and the disenchanted outcasts would rebel against less than a generation later when the late Sixties rolled in. And this is just before Rock And Roll took root. It was in its infancy at the end of 1954.
I think the quality of the film and black and white tends to make people look older, too
@@mz2083 50% of all men smoked at this time. There were smokers, and people who lived with smokers. Plus smoke filled nearly all public places. Shortened everyone's lives. But I see so many comments that those were "the good old days'
Groucho did not growl at Zale. One of the prettiest women ever on his show. Curious.
When the diver Zale Parry talks of using an Aqualung*, I'd have loved to have heard Groucho ask, "When you use the Aqualung, are you sitting on a park bench, or playing the flute while standing on one leg and wearing a long coat?
*See discography for Jethro Tull (band).
Love this kind of fun with m,c,
"I'll bet the judge had a double Scotch right afterwards." I saw this on reruns in the 1970s - a favorite line. Along with, "It's a good thing there's a vaccination scar."
Sorry but they look 79 not 59. Wow
Black and white doesn't help either
People were very mature back then!
The set of twins are odd and living together. That is pretty weird
Zale was certainly beautiful!
I from right down the road from Modesto.
Zale Parry
1940 dollars was a big amount then
Why were they giving away old dollar bills (dollars from 1940?)?
1950s
Hilarious!
Ok found it!
SHE IS EXACTLY THAT MA'AM! I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY! MICHAEL! FORMER UNITED STATES ARMY 🪖☮️🇺🇲 MILITARY POLICE OFFICER WHO SOUGHT JUSTICE NOT INJUSTICE NO MATTER RACE COLOR OR CREED! BYE FOR NOW AND THANKS FOR YOUR UTUBE CHANNEL!! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS TAKE CARE STAY SAFE AND STAY STRONG!!❤🎉
Why have subtitles suddenly appeared on ybyl reruns? The predictive text is awful! How can I remove the subtitles?
Joseph Farrell
Have you ever tried turning your 💻 or📱or whatever OFF and ON again?!
No subtitles. You may have accidentally turned on your closed captioning
Great show they didnt need to bleep the nbc mic
This would be the perfect episode to drop acid to...or should I say to which to drop acid?
Fleischer studios cartoons are the best. They ARE acid!
No such thing back then
You listed the wrong occupation for Pat Cunningham of couple #2, he owns a sporting goods store and does some bull fighting, and you didn’t list his partner’s name at all, Gwen Anderson, crane operator.
A guy who was on the show that I would like to know if he is still alive is H G Morton, the domination of women guy. I would like to ask him his opinion of the world from 1959 to the present. Anyone have any information on him besides his 2 appearances on You Bet Your Life? I have not been able to find out anything about his life or if he is still alive.
He's dead. I watched it a few weeks ago and looked him up on Ancestry.com. He had married and died in I want to say early 2000s.
21:18 Men in Black standing in the isles… 😮
5:45 I thought he was going to kiss her
Isn't it funny that Zale Parry married a man whose first name was Parry? Actually I've never heard this name elsewhere...
Welsh surname I think evolved from Ap Harry (son of Harry)
Ever notice that there are no kids in the audience?
When I worked in television in the 80’s and 90’s, audiences had to be over 18, whether for game shows, talk shows or sitcoms. Kids easily get bored and antsy and could become disruptive. It usually takes at least an hour or more to tape each episode. Boring for kids.
@@dotsywotsy18 And I don't think most of the kids would not get these boring, repetitive jokes!!
Children were left home, as this was for adults!
The first contestant who won was a nice guy and a complete gentleman.
I can't stand it when someone answers a question without even conferring with their partner.
Hate to say it but it is usually the men.
true
He really was a lovely man. I wish we knew more about him
Too bad the Phil Silver guy didn't get to sing. He was dying do. Groucho miss the mark on that one.
Something Groucho said at the end When he said he wanted to get an agent made me think that perhaps he did sing and it was not very talented so They may have cut out the singing
Ran short of time
I could probably compare groucho's great wit to probably Steve harvey. No one else has the charm, grace, and sense of comedy like them .
Harvey isn't anything like Mr Marx
Steve Harvey,, the best, & funniest Family Feud host out of all of them.....
One person gave this a down-vote. Bad person!
Emma Watson looks a little like Zale.
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel things ever. Thumbs down.
Back then it was considered a brave man sport
