A couple of pointers on your drilling: pick up a bottle of cutting oil, a little drop on your bit will make your drilling SO much easier and faster and save your drill bits. If you can't sharpen your bits with a grinder manually, pick up a drill doctor, as soon as you feel your bits getting a little dull, 1 min in the drill doctor and they'll be like brand spanking new. I take 30 mins a month and sharpen all mine whether they need it or not. Makes life SO much easier.
Also, you might want to pick up a step drill, it took makes drilling holes in steel so much easier since you're only removing a wee bit at a time.

Great job @vtuned. Really a cool ambitious build and you’re really persevering and inspiring me to get in the garage. Question, will there be sleeves welded into your front frame rails where the bolts go through for the new sub frame mounting? I’m not trying to be a couch fabricator but I’m genuinely curious if torquing down on those sub frame bolts won’t deform or somewhat crush the hollow rails? Just food for thought, not sure just wondered and thought to ask. Thank you for the content.

    • @leaelita2
      @leaelita2 4 года назад +3

I was wondering if someone would point this out. They are thick channels, but it would be good practice to insert sleeves. I would suggest the same was done for the front cross brace instead of opening the holes up for the socket to fit through.

Great really great but one thing you might want to look into, the bolts you are using that go threw the frame, you can't really get them tight because if you do it will just crush the tubing, one thing you might want to think about is drilling the hole over size so you can put a tube or pipe all the way threw the frame and weld it to the tube frame, this way you can tighten it to spec's...

I don't think you will have to worry about remounting the engine. With the 66 body being a different length, it really only means you will have to get a shorter or longer drive shaft once you have the front and rear subframes mounted to center the wheel arch. Custom driveshafts are easy to come by, most areas will have somewhere nearby that makes them. Other than that, when you go to mount the struts, remember that tilting it towards or away from the front of the car changes your caster which will be important in how it drives later (it is what makes your wheels point forward for anyone wondering). Thankfully those airbags have a caster plate on top which will give you a lot of adjustment later once you get it close.
Love the build, only found the channel a few days ago (from your work with Fasterproms) but bing watched multiple builds while working and looking forward to more!

challenging project. Cool! Would personally make the holes in the main frame rails a bit bigger and weld in a tube where those big bolts go through. It would make it so much stronger. These bolts are strong enough to deform those frame rails parts since they are not that extremely thick. And also from all forces from road use and engine forces.. So would weld in some simple tubes.. and you'll be able to tighten those bolts as tight as needed and wanted :) Keep up the good work! Wondering how it will end up.. how the front window will be done and look etc.. but for sure an exciting build! Nice to see your dad as well in the videos. Greetings from the Netherlands!

I don’t think you need to throw shade on yourself over having to get a new sub frame made for you, I bet with a little tweaking the one you made would’ve worked. Hell half the people out there dont come near you in the perfection department. The reason I watch your channel and the goonz channel is the amount of perfection you all put into the work you’s do. It’s amazing how far you all go to get things spot on. Keep it going man and I think you’ll be up there with some of the famous car builders out there. I think it’s a shame that the goonzquad have to put the trackhawk on a reconstructed title if they want to sell it or even put it back on the road. No one would’ve went the distance you’s went to get that truck back to perfect and when I say perfect I mean it. I’m blown away of the work you all do. Wherever you want your dream of building cars to take you I think you and the goonz are gonna make it far in the car building custom world, it’s only a matter of time because you all have to be turning heads with the videos you’s put out. Hats off to both of you’s

You're a rare re-builder channel to admit that you were wrong and choose a better path for a project instead of just bailing on it then playing it off like there was some 'other' issue. It's shows you have good character.

Nice to see a "younger" guy admit that he's still learning. I'm 49 and still learning. The subframe you built was still a great effort, most guys couldn't get that far. And believe me all that experience you had, bending, welding ECT on that subframe... Is worth way more than you might think. Keep up the great work.

Make sure you weld tubes into the sub frame holes in the chassis so you dont crush the rails when you tighten them up. Looking good. 👍

your work ethic is so admirable! most would've simply thrown in the towel after that mistake but not you, you learned from it, put your head down and kept at it. and that right there is a great formula for success. your parents did a good job raising you. good luck and God bless!

Good work, it's coming along. Well done bud.
Please consider something: you can't just bolt trough a square tube. Put a round tube or something inside the sqare tube to prevent bending it in with the bolt and loosing tension while driving because of the flex in the sqare tube.
Can't wait to see more of your build.

Great job brother, don't forget to sleeve the holes you drilled on frame rails for subframe as they may collapse when tightening bolts.

vTuned, You're wrong to call it a failure, it's one iteration that didn't meet your expectations. It's not failure, it's a temporary set back. Way to go for tackling such a huge project!

Since you are making your own frame you can set your own wheel base. Just center the rear in the rear wheel wells and then place fenders and find out where you should put the front subframe

hay great vids it's awesome that you show your mistakes it's how we all learn . you might check into galvanic corrosion inhibitors for the front aluminum crash bar or you will have corrosion problems between the two surfaces were they come together. thank again have a good one .

I was sure you were going to weld threaded inserts into the frame for that sweet new subframe. Something for the future maybe? Give this guy five years max and he'll be building custom subframes for customers. I miss the body industry, frame guys were worth their weight in gold.

On those four bolts holding the subframe in the chassis.. on our race car frames anything that goes through the tubes or box tubes we drill oversize. We use round chromoly tubing inserted in the hole and weld it into the frame. Grind the weld flat. The bolt runs through the tube. It prevents the bolts from walking in the frame rails. Makes it more rigid. We call them bolt spuds. Also, by the way you're doing a good job. Google chassis spuds images. You'll get the idea of what I'm talkin about.🇺🇸✌️
