  • Rajiv’s favorite painter is John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) who had a close relationship with the Met while he was still alive. Today Stephanie Herdrich, associate curator of American paintings and sculpture, joins us for a conversation about this incredible artist’s life and work.

Dearest Rajiv, you are a Renaissance man who has great capacity to seek out all the nuances of elegance and excellence. You then set out to master and inhabit that which you have sought, and with each accomplishment you become a steward of the beauty you practice to create. I cannot think of a more perfect description of an exceptional human being. You always inspire refinement in all you do. ❤

Thank you, thank you. I cannot say this enough. I would never have learned all that you brought to us in this video. People don't realize what they can learn from artists, until they do. And this is something we have to pursue and faithfully teach to others, never really knowing of the eventual results.

@@rajivsurendra can you draw well? Drawing is very important with all art, but especially with water color. A life drawing class is a great way to learn drawing. The nude figure is very challenging but when you get it, especially the foreshortening & the light & shadow on the human form… it’s so beautiful. Try it with red chalk.

many years ago, i worked for a horrible person who lived on park avenue. a toxic work environment that truly took its toll on me. on a rainy friday, i got my check and told my employer i was quitting. when i got to the street, the cold evening air welcomed me and i felt renewed. i walked to the Met, it was the final days of the J.S.S. show. i love J.S.S. there i was - in my very wet trench coat, wet book bag and carrying my wet umbrella, packed in the rooms along with many others admiring his treasures. i stood in front of my favorites wishing i could go back in time and be in the room watching him work. wishing that me, a black latina could have sat for him. i gave myself the opportunity to work the rooms a second time. everyone was practically shoulder to shoulder. i left the rooms. left the Met and walked to the bus stop to take the crosstown bus to the west side. while waiting for the bus, i said to myself, smiling - what a beautiful way to end a horrible few months. i couldn't stop smiling on my way home. thank you J.S.S. and thank you Rajiv. you are both glorious! i am writing all this with tears in my eyes. XO.😘😘

Note the delicacy with which he renders those of the ladies. Also note the subtle way in which he echoes their poses in the magnolia blossoms at the bottom right of the painting.'

His watercolors are also remarkable for the certainty of his strokes. The most wonderful exhibit I have ever viewed was a show of his Venetian watercolors in Venice at Museo Correr. The small paintings were shown in small galleries with open windows that revealed the special light and reflections of the water on the ceilings and walls - giving me the magical experience that I could have never had anywhere else on the planet…. I saw Singer Sargent, Portraits of artists and friends at the National Portrait gallery, London. Apart from being a talented artist he was a polyglot and on a zoom talk I found out that he was buried in Brookwood cemetery the same as that wonderful Scottish artist Arthur Melville. Dodi Al Fayed, Princess Diana's boyfriend, was buried there but he was moved. How did Sargent of American parentage, end up in Woking? I think Sargent inherited his talent from his architect father and as his family were rich he could indulge his talent and travel in Paris, Italy etc.

This was lovely as always. I paint for pleasure (and not well!!), but always forget just how wonderful it is to be in a museum and how captivating it is. I'm lucky enough to live close to Boston, I need to visit the MFA more often.

Thank you! The Met is the best place to escape from dreary weather! As well as The Cloisters! And thanks also for the recommendation of the book. Luckily, the Las Vegas Library has a couple in their collection and I've reserved a copy! 😀 Luv dem boots.

The first time I saw a JSS in person was at the Frick, and it was Lady Agnew. I am blonde, not wealthy by most worldly standards... and yet that *look* he captured... it was like seeing both into and through a mirror, witnessing an expression I'd probably felt & made a thousand times... allowing me for the first time to view something I knew intimately from the mind out, yet from a distance. He reminded me so much of another hero, W.B. Yeats - who could also, as so many true artists can - capture the spiritual, minute particulars in such a perfection as to make them universal - ever exact, ever expanding, without boundaries of time or space or circumstances.

I haven't read the latest one yet, but it's on my list. I love the old biography written by Evan Charteris. I don't take commissions for portraits, I don't have command over the medium yet, still need to learn A LOT more before I can even think of confidently painting a portrait as a commission...and I may never even get there. I'm really enjoying the learning process, though.

Thank you kindly for inviting us into the museum to share meeting your friend Stephanie. Such a lovely visit exploring the artist and his works , a touch of historic relevance and true emotional depth that another artist can express. It is a moving experience this feeling into the piece , to study what he was bringing forward. You are going in the perfect direction with total emersion. The drive to live for the creation of your art is the art in truest form. Looking forward to viewing a piece when you are thus inclined for showing. Always a pleasure kind sir.
