A MUST DO upgrade to a Silverado. My 21 had 4 miles on it when purchased and started paying attention to trans temps after watching simular videos and didn't like what I saw. Immediately installed the Superior kit and temps reduced dramatically. We pulled a 6x12 inclosed U-hall from NC to Daytona with two motorcycles in upper 80 degree weather at 65-70 mph and trans ran 130-150. Big difference!
Which transmission do you have and how many miles? I have 8l90 and the transmission is shuddering. Fluid is already turning brown again and the dealership didn't tell me.
When I found out about this I immediately went to the steelership and got the updated version , I noticed a huge drop in temp from 195 to maybe 165 , it works and is worth every penny .
Bought a used 2016 5.3 with 70k miles. At 90k miles my tranny started to shutter after a long distance drive in hot weather one day. Swapped out atf fluid and filter along with this mod and haven’t had any issues since now I’m at 105k miles a lot of towing my boat
@@StrongTurfremove transmission pan and change filter. Install superior transmission cooler valve. Replace fluid with mobile one lv synthetic transmission fluid. It's the blue lable fluid. You should drain out around five and a half quarts, when removing pan. I changed mine twice before dropping pan and changing filter. Runs around 147 degrees, and no more shutter. Resetting the transmission is a must. I used Vident scan tool for resetting transmission. All the new 6,8,10 speed transmissions from all manufacturers have the shudders.
I just replaced my 6speed in my 2011 tahoe with upgrade billet components its been great ,my 2014 ltz transmission issue was experiencing rattling noices when 55-60mph dealer agreed to fix since I had warranty however ended up hiring an attorney dealer done some shady business practices but I'm looking at 2017 ltz with 83k miles 1 owner clean truck I really want to buy it but want to prevent any issues ahead of time thanks for the info
Must be nice, shit I put the thermostat bypass in mine so it’s basically deleted, and my transmission will still hit 215°f in stop and go traffic not towing lol
I have a aftermarket cooler and Thermostat and have a hell of a time trying to get my transmission up to 170 just to check the fluid. I also run Amsoil ATF for whatever that’s worth.
@@grominwithrob1339 I have been using Amsoil for diffs and trans fluid for years, in both street and race cars. I depend on it and have been pleased. I also like their brake fluid, it seems to last really well without burning.
FYI you can tell if yours is the updated factory version. Look at the bottom of the TBV @ 8:40 in video. It will have "70" stamped into it. If it has the stamp that means they replaced the old one and your g2g! Changing out the original TBVs on these transmissions is a must if you want them to last.
Yup I have no idea what GM was thinking when they made the stock TBV to only open at 195°. Absolutely cooked my 6L80 and it blew up on me at 150k miles
And must service the transmission as well before Gm's recommended service! I do mine every 40,000 miles. I also got the Range technologies afm delete module. Keeps it in V8 mode all the time. Seems like switching from V4 to V8 mode the transmission doesn't know what gear to be in!
The 70 stamp on the revised one means 70 degrees Celsius (Equals 158 F) instead of 195 before. The high temps cook the fluid, then damage follows. Mobil 1 Syn Dextron Trans Fluid (Blue Label) is superior and highly recommended. Look at your fluid, folks, pull the dip and wipe on a white napkin - it's obvious.
@@thangknowa3288 I installed one in my 2017 when I bought it used at 46,000 miles and serviced the transmission as well. Average temp is 145, haven't seen a temp higher than 170!
Nah, Dude, you're absolutely right about those crazy High Temps. I strongly recommend you consider wrapping your Exhaust pipe that's traveling Directly under your TranPan with some Titanium Twill Weave Exhaust Shield Wrap (2"X50ft) That Pipe is just WAY Too Damn Close and it's literally Cooking that Transmission Oil!
Wrapping the exhaust that crosses under the trans pan is excessive and unneeded, and pretty ineffective at reducing the fluid temp. If you want to reduce the temps the best way is an aftermarket trans cooler. I have a 2012 with the same 6 speed transmission but GM didn’t put a crappy thermostat on them and even towing my boat down the highway on 90°+ days my trans temp stays below 170° and might climb to 187° in stop and go traffic in the city.
@chevyon37s Actually, by wrapping my Exhaust, it reduced my Temps by 15 degrees. "Uneeded" ... maybe "Ineffective"... Most certainly NOT. I agree, however, on the Thermostat issue. A 160° Thermo wouldn't allow for proper Running Temps ... therefore, you would never achieve the Running Temperatures required to get the vehicle to operate as actually intended. But a 180° Thermostat WOULD DEFINETLY be an Optimal Choice to help keep those insane Temperatures DOWN and still maintain Proper operating functionality within the vehicle. But, Dude... Don't Knock it until you, at least, TRY it. That Titanium Twill Weave was Just What the Doctor Ordered! Fifteen Degrees is still FIFTEEN DEGREES.... No matter which way you wanna try and slice it, Turkey.
I have the 2021 Custom Trail Boss. I put in a Superior Solutions transmission thermostat delete kit in it and swapped the stock trans cooler for a 40K and added two more quarts of oil and it made a big difference in my transmission temperature. Previously, it climbed above 200 at night pulling my boat at night up The Baker Grade outside of Baker, CA with the AC Running so I decided that wasn’t ever going to happen again so I did the above. If I’m still not happy with my transmission temperature I am going to add a thermostatic fan to the cooler.
I did the same thing, bought the updated GM one, then got the PPE one and also the deep pan they make to hold more fluid trans runs nice and cool. Did notice that in the cold weather here in NY trans temp does not get very high and gets very poor gas mileage in the winter.
It's know fact for any vehicle in Northeast to get worse mpgs in winter due to running vehicles at idle longer and the gas mixture is different from the summer mixtures due to the temps
Also known fact if the fluid doesnt get to operating temp then its going to cause more drag cuz the fluid is thicker. Either A" put the lower temp gm thermal bypass block in or B put it back in the winter and swap out in summer. Gas mileage sure goes down some from winterized gas but the trans operating temp is above I believe 145. If you put in a trucool 40k cooler with the bypass delete that cooler has an internal bypass that routes the fluid through part of the cooler until it gets up to temp then flows it through the hole cooler.@Doof3rproductions
my 15 has 128k and the fluid is fried. Went to Geese Monkey and did the fluid flush which includes the torque converter. Wonder if this was a little too late, It still shifts nice but i will still change the stat. Thanks for the great video.
The high temperatures does cause problems along with the inferior material the converter is constructed from I changed my converter to a billet one along with the cooler upgrade
I put the same thing in my 2015 Silverado about 2 months ago, temps went from 190-200 to around 150-160, easy install. I was going to use the superior solutions install kit, but could not get the piece to come out after removing the snap ring, I tried everything short of drilling out the center and probably ruining the whole device. So keep that in mind if you plan to replace the bypass yourself.
I’d also suggest doing a mod to your exhaust by changing the exhaust so the pilot doesn’t cross over the trans pan. Not only will you take heat away but you’ll gain horsepower!
I bet your hands and phone are still rust free today with that fresh ATF bath!😂🤣😂🤣. I really like the kit you put in over the Superior solutions. I have the Superior Solutions mod, but think I will swap to the housing you have. Just the service port makes it completely worth it to me. I have a new pan with cooling fins and a drain plug to put in this spring so I’ll knock it out then, or sooner if I can find a warm garage in Michigan to use. 😂😂😂
Soaked the original tbv with some wd 40 and my 8 yo son took apart the original with really thin needle nose pliers and a pair of regular pliers and he rebuilt the original block with the superior solutions bypass and re assembled it while I just put the newer tbv block from the dealer for 100 bucks and changed the metal gasket behind it that’s recommended and now I have a backup if I don’t like the newer gm bypass valve I wanted to make sure I had options being the truck only has 27k
I’ve heard the WD40 works for some people and doesn’t work for others. Mine looked like it would probably be easy enough to open up, but I figured I would just not bother.
I just added an additional Mishimoto transmission cooler as well as installing the Superior Solutions bypass kit to my 2016 Silverado LT. In daily driving the temperature has been running below 120 degrees F. It will be interesting to see what the temperature is when I tow my 8400 lb travel trailer next summer. Even with the updated GM thermostat my temperature was running 180 degrees while towing.
Another thing I think is important is upgrading your exhaust. You’ll get more HP but removing the exhaust crossover the transmission pan. That adds a lot of heat, Im surprised they didn’t heat shield that area when they designed the truck.
I can’t believe your transmission builder didn’t do this when he rebuilt it… Shop I took my last truck to, and my buddy took his 2015 to for rebuild won’t rebuild a 6L80e without doing a thermostat delete and a billet torque converter. I’m at 157k miles on the 6L80e in my 2012, BUT I do have aftermarket trans tuning and I do change the fluid regularly-ish.
Depending on the transmission that you have 6L80 (get the code from the side of the trans), there are different schemes to save this trans. First is change fluid about evey 30K or so. Second is to upgrade to the TBV (GM or Superior). Third is to install the Sonnax 6L80 Zip Kit Part No. 6L45-6L90-ZIP. Then you can go all out from there with a B&I converter (built with Sonnax billet parts) etc. The real killer of these trans is the fact GM saw fit to stack the radiators and run the fluids (oil and trans) right along side the coolant and then put an AGS system in front of it to improve mileage. BIG mistake GM. Even with an oil and a trans cooler you may still see upper temps (180 - 215). Fun test is to open your windows and run the heater full blast ... watch the temp drop on the trans temp return. Much more to this story.
2018 62,000 transmission went all interstate miles never off the pavement never owned anything other than American but unfortunately American manufacturers can't build a vehicle that last. now i own a Toyota and I love it
Chevy and brands always burned up transmissions. Trucks with overheating transmissions go back as far back as 1983 with my Chevy Blazer and more with my fathers. My transmission overheated, burned the cooling line that passes through the radiator, sent water into the engine that boiled out the dip stick onto the manifold and started a fire. Today I always add an extra transmission cooler if the vehicle does not always have one. My 2004 Jeep grand cherokee has not had any problems towing my 3000 pound boat. Thanks for the information about the thermostate.
I’ve heard good things about the Superior kit. Although my TPV looked like it would be a huge pain to open up. Plus I didn’t have any snap ring pliers handy
My 2018 Silverado 1500 transmission blew at 110,000 miles. Got a "new" transmission and after a month was seeing trans temps still above 220deg. Installed the Superior Solutions kit you referenced, and temps have not gone over 195deg since installed. Had Chevy dealership look at transmission for high temps twice before it blew and all they did was replace the transmission fluid.
I have a 2018 Silverado 1500. I've had the transmission repaired 2 months ago for the torque converter and high pressure pump going bad, and now I'm having problems with the overdrive kicking in too soon at 40 mph.
The 5.3 is know for dropping lifters and it's not a cheap fix ..They say it's not if, it's when they go.. You can order a chip you simply plug into you obdll to keep it in the v8 mode and keep it out of the v4 mode ..The problem lies in the vlom below the intake... To replace a lifter you need to tear the top of engine down to just the block ..With them engines you just can't remove the intake to replace lifters ..You need to also remove the vlom and heads ..Then if your lucky the cam is not destroyed.. The chip can be bought on Amazon for $200-$250...
I’d recommend the superior solutions for the 8l90. I have an 18 Silverado and live in the desert. Easy install and dropped temps dramatically. Mine never gets above 145, even in triple digit heat.
Great suggestion MOD. Just purchased a 2018 Silverado 1500 V8 4x4 and will add this PPE to my transmission. Have you done the Oil separator/ catch can kit?
I have a 2017 Silverado 1500. I bought it used, after reading all the negatives. Trying to be proactive I did a full service on transmission and Gm's upgraded thermal bypass. Installed a catch can then plugged in range technologies afm delete module. It's amazing how much oil and vapors are in the catch can after 3000 miles! Hopefully being proactive I'll get close to 200,000 miles before any major issues. I bought it with 46,000 miles then did all above with in a month. My transmission temps average 145 and the highest so far after 2 years I've seen is 170!
Transmission issues are still present on the 2019+ models. GM has released an updated transmission thermostat that you can pick up at a dealer. But they never issued any recalls
Autozone about $3500 but add on another $1000 for the core charge. I believe I paid the $4500 up front and then they gave me $1000 back when I gave them the old transmission
How has it been holding up? Im looking at buying a 2018 with 40k miles and this is probably going to be the first thing I do to it to hopefully never have to worry about the torque converter/transmission going out
Occasionally I have seen hot temps if I am towing 2 mowers. For example if I tow for an hour straight through the city then temps will still get upwards of 200. But 90% of the time it stays 165-185 which is a lot cooler than before
This should be the first thing you buy especially for how cheap it is. I bought a used 2016 with 70k miles and at 90k miles a had my tranny acting weird. I replaced ATF and filter along with this mod no issues since
9/24/24. I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 and it has banged down shifting from 2nd to 1st since 50,000.. Took it to a dealer and was told it is normal for this trans. It continued for many thousand miles. Took it to a different dealer and told this has been a problem and it is the valve body, changed that and now at 80,000 back at that dealer and trans pan dropped and fluid is burnt and metal filings found. Told to rebuild over $5,000.00, with Chevy 1 yr warentee or new trans $7,000.00, what would you do.
If it’s such a cheap update why wouldn’t GM have a recall to do them. Seems $135 is a lot cheaper than $$thousands$$ for a blown unit. So many forums on this transmission are pointing to a class action. This recall would be much cheaper for GM.
Should not change anything. Unless you also added a deeper transmission pan to allow a bigger capacity. But the fluid check procedure should be the same after doing the thermal bypass
@@StrongTurf aaaand that is what????? Not one video with these bypass mods show how the fluid should be checked properly, which is the most important step missed. The instructions say no warm up needed. I phone the place and they say just check level whenever. This is exactly why I’m asking the question.
You should be able to check the fluid immediately after starting the truck. Fluid flows immediately. So you don't have to heat it up to open the thermostat.
@@SKMYFthe real problem is in 5 and 6th, gear the converter slips on 6l80 the 8l90 slips in 7th and 8th GM programmed them to slip, a good tranny guy can reprogram the tourqe converter not to slip.
The TBV is a big plus to replace. But the main problem is the GM CHEAP GARBAGE Torque Converter. It fails early because of the temps and the pressed steel & welded Torque Converter cover plate. The cover plate wraps and grinds metal and friction material sending it into the Trans Pump destroying everything. It should be replaced asap with a Forged, Billet, T.C. with multi-clutch plates (2).
@@StrongTurf I’ve noticed my 2014 is starting to shift hard in lower gears even before getting warmed up. I don’t do much towing if at all, been curious if this will help fix along with a trans filter/fluid dump.
@@ryandurham5725depends if you have already changed your trans fluid regularly. I didn’t change mine until 100k, then it started shifting hard at about 120k, changed fluid again at 140k then it blew up at 150k. I would only change the fluid if you have already done it often. Otherwise just leave it.
The 6 speed converters are junk. The 8 speed shudder. In the GM.I am a GM guy but the transmission are junk I have a 2019 GMC with a 10 speed I hope it last for a while.
The new thermal bypass on the truck is still doing good. Only ever got over 200° a couple times when it was over 100 outside and I was doing long drives while towing. Other than that it’s keeping the temps where they should be. Now I just have to address all the other stuff that’s wrong with the truck 🤣
@ my recommendation would be to not change your trans fluid. Keep it dirty. I didn’t listen and I changed the fluid when I noticed the hard shifting. Then my transmission blew up less than 10,000 miles later. The dirty fluid will help the worn down gears grip better. And the thermal bypass valve will help prolong the life as long as possible. I got my new transmission from Autozone for about $3,500 and put it in myself with the help of a youtube video from Express Auto Transmission based out of kansas

Add a 40k tru cool, & get rid of the active shutters.
My truck doesn’t have the bracket, you know where I can buy one
I used the superior kit had no issues taking it apart, Trans runs at about 160 towing like my older trucks did before this stupid thermostat
I’ve heard good things about the Superior kit. Although my TPV looked like it would be a huge pain to open up. Plus I didn’t have any snap ring pliers handy
How’s the truck now any updates on the bypass
My gmc sierra 1500. Did exactly like your truck. I'll buy the bypass thermostat then!
Prior to your transmission blowing up, what were the signs? Other than shifting hard.
Did you have coolant leak prior???
My 2018 Silverado 1500 transmission blew at 110,000 miles. Got a "new" transmission and after a month was seeing trans temps still above 220deg. Installed the Superior Solutions kit you referenced, and temps have not gone over 195deg since installed. Had Chevy dealership look at transmission for high temps twice before it blew and all they did was replace the transmission fluid.
Oh jeez. Yeah 220 is not good at all. The most I’ve seen on mine is 207 and I think even that is way too hot
Mine goes all the way to 260. Its that mormal?
@@SerafinN26 no 260 is bad. You are cooking the internals of your transmission if you drive with those temps
I have a 2018 Silverado 1500. I've had the transmission repaired 2 months ago for the torque converter and high pressure pump going bad, and now I'm having problems with the overdrive kicking in too soon at 40 mph.
The part that destroys the transmission is the torque converter.
Great Video Thank you. Will this work on the 8L90 Transmission? " 8 speed" 2017 Silverado..
I’d recommend the superior solutions for the 8l90. I have an 18 Silverado and live in the desert. Easy install and dropped temps dramatically. Mine never gets above 145, even in triple digit heat.
Amazing design, besides the fact the drain/service port is facing upwards, rendering it useless.
Why do you think GM set the original temp 194 so high ?
I changed it on 2024 Silverado temp never goes over 175 degrees
My 2020 AT4 trans temp has never gone past 160. Just changed the trans fluid at 95K with amsoi
Would a better cooler be cheaper or more practical?
great video ,thanks . did gm solve there transmission problems ,if so what year ? thks
Transmission issues are still present on the 2019+ models. GM has released an updated transmission thermostat that you can pick up at a dealer. But they never issued any recalls
Is this issue happening to ford trucks too model 2013 6 speed
Listen thank you from Jorge Garcia Dallas Texas
Thanks for the info 😊
Where did you buy your transmission mission at that you put in your truck and about how much did it cost?
Autozone about $3500 but add on another $1000 for the core charge. I believe I paid the $4500 up front and then they gave me $1000 back when I gave them the old transmission
I just got a 2014 Tahoe police car, will need to change that piece?
Only if your transmission fluid is getting up into the 200° range. If it’s steady around 160-180 it should be fine
I replaced ATF and filter along with this mod no issues since
Do yourself a favor and change the filter and fluid. Replace with mobile 1lvhp synthetic tranny fluid.
I did they same on a 2020 no change in temp
My 2017 went out last year at 68k. Took the new trans. due to parts shortage. I got a 3 year, 100k mile warranty.
My 2020 AT4 10 speed has never gone past 160. I just recently changed out the fluid and filter at 95K
GM changed the temp bypass temp to 160 on newer truck, 2018 and newer.
My 2019 Silverado goes too the 200-205.
You also probably have a more heavy duty torque converter in that 10 speed. These wimpy 6L80 torque converters just melt when the temp gets above 190
Is this switch out the reason your check engine light is on
Lol no Ive had a check engine light for a while due to a bad O2 sensor that I haven’t bothered to switch out
Now this is just me but if a person does this for $80 why not put the new o rings on the line and a gasket ? Its cheap insurance to prevent a leak.
Who is responsible for my transmission replacement if the part is defective
Got a 2017 suburban 5.3 6 speed. Can this be used on it?
I believe so. Should be the same part for any 2014-19 with the 6L80 trans
Should I do this with my 2008 at 156000 miles and the only gear that shift hard is going into second but only when I punch it
It can’t hurt. It definitely won’t take away the hard shift but it can prevent it from getting worse
Try resetting the transmission, it helped mine. Pretty simple depending on year model.@@StrongTurf
Hello Sir. Are you interested in working with us to try our Silverado floor mats and help us make a video?
I’d love to- email me at StrongTurfManagement@gmail.com
@@StrongTurf Np. We sent! If you don't get it, pls take a look at your sp/am in/box.
The torque converter is probably going to go out on a 6L80 transmission regardless of the cooler bypass valve.
If it’s such a cheap update why wouldn’t GM have a recall to do them. Seems $135 is a lot cheaper than $$thousands$$ for a blown unit. So many forums on this transmission are pointing to a class action. This recall would be much cheaper for GM.
Can anyone please let us know how you check the fluid level now with this thermal bypass? So many different answers, I’m totally confused.
Depends on what transmission you have. The 8-speed like mine doesn’t have a dipstick to check the fluid level.
Bro get to the point.
Is this the reason the 8l90 trans are going out?
Torque converted programmed to fail at 80 to 115K miles. Replace the torque converter if possible.
@@SKMYFthe real problem is in 5 and 6th, gear the converter slips on 6l80 the 8l90 slips in 7th and 8th GM programmed them to slip, a good tranny guy can reprogram the tourqe converter not to slip.
Change transmission fluid 2 different one and put that on
My 2015 subarban Mine Mine blew up 104k miles
Is this the same part number for the 8l90e transmission ?
I believe it would be a different part number. Mine is for a 6L80
@@StrongTurfit's the same part. 6 speed or 8 speed.
I’m gonna assume you drained the transmission fluid before doing this ??
Nope left it full and it only drained a little bit of fluid out when I took it off
@@StrongTurf I’ve noticed my 2014 is starting to shift hard in lower gears even before getting warmed up.
What's the name of this part
Thermal Bypass Valve
@@StrongTurf okay thank you
The 6 speed converters are junk. The 8 speed shudder. In the GM.I am a GM guy but the transmission are junk I have a 2019 GMC with a 10 speed I hope it last for a while.
Hey how is your truck
The new thermal bypass on the truck is still doing good. Only ever got over 200° a couple times when it was over 100 outside and I was doing long drives while towing. Other than that it’s keeping the temps where they should be.
Now I just have to address all the other stuff that’s wrong with the truck 🤣
@ i just got the truck this month I have problems with shifting lol 😂 thanks for the video every time I slow down it shift down hard
Experiencing trans failure right now on my 2014 at 150,000 miles
Sounds about right. Mine started shifting very hard and slipping around 130-140k and blew up pretty much as soon as I got to 150k. Bought a new 6L80 from Autozone for $3500 and swapped it in my driveway with the help of some RUclips tutorials
Got a pinch a Hagen
i have a 2018 Silverado 1500 and my transmission just completely went out at only 64K miles. unbelievable. 4K miles out of warranty, go figure. dealer wouldnt do anything about it. Im only now going down the rabbit hole of these shitty 6L80 tranys that have obvious failure rates and yet GM continues to use them. I drove my F150 for 180K and never thought once about the transmission going out and now my chevy died at 64K and with proper regular maintenance?!?! Big WTF GM, WTF. Im looking to do a full replace with aftermarked billet converter, im going to bypass the active fuel management system and maybe something like this part to help my trans temps.
This only works for the 5.3! NOT the 4.3!!
Really.
@@SerafinN26I installed this 2 weeks ago and I still get up to 196! I’ll be installing a separate trans cooler for sure!
It's EZ to put the parts in the old one.
Just happened to me. 176k
If it don’t happen sooner it will happen later
mine went at 110,000.
A 21 minute video that could have been done in 5 minutes.
5000 installed
More Chevy shit !!!!!!!
By the looks of your bald ass rear tires you did one too many burnouts.
You betcha
Best way to fix the problem is not to buy GM garbage in the first place!!!😂😂😂😂😂
FYI Ford has the same t stat, and Ford and GM transmissions are made by Allison.
Why would anyone make a video with tabacco shew in your mouth, ….its gross
Feel free to not watch
WTF is it called ? Spit it out!!! 👎
20 minutes of BS!
Thanks for your feedback, sorry that you have the attention span of a squirrel and can’t sit still for 20 mins
I got a GMC sierra SLT 2018 my transmission temperature stays around 180 got a 98,000 miles on it but when I do get on the freeway and start to catch speed. I notice if I push it too hard I’ll get a flutter.?
