Not everything needs to be recorded in the scriptures. Nonetheless, most credible scholars recognise that “Babylon” is a symbolic code for the city of Rome in the petrine epistles.
Padre, I would like to point out that historians don't deny Peter likely went to Rome. I realize you don't agree with that, but there are sources outside scripture which historical witnesses are accepted as proof that he did indeed go to Rome. You need to be more educated on this subject before you deny something most Protestants don't even dispute. I say this with love for you, you just make yourself sound not informed. Research that subject, read the evidence then form your opinion.
@@dman7668 Thank you for you comment "in love" otherwise I would have taken issue of your assumption that I am ignorant, and "need more education on this subject". Granted, I do not have PhD after my name, but as a Protestant pastor, I not only study the scriptures daily, but also read the writings of learned men much wiser than I. I know that there are some Protestants who believe that Peter was in Rome, but I do not believe that "most Protestants" believe this. Even Foxes Book of Martyrs casts doubt on the subject: "Among many other saints, the blessed apostle Peter was condemned to death, and crucified, as some do write, at Rome; albeit some others, and not without cause, do doubt thereof". As the third most mentioned man in the New Testament, much of Peters travels and cities he visited are well documented, but Rome is never mentioned, nor does Paul in his prison epistles ever mention Peter being in Rome with him. Whether Paul was ever in Rome or not really should not be a matter of division. Instead we should concentrate on what really matters, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ alone, Faith alone, Grace alone.
The catholic church has always reminded me of the Jewish religious leaders from the Bible. Wearing fancier clothes than the regular people. Talking in a language no one understands, latin. Maybe some do. Always seeming better than the regular people. The worshipping of idols has me puzzled though. Can't figure that one. It says in the Bible, plain as day, not to create any image to worship. I'm just thankful I wasn't brought up in that church.
You clearly don’t understand the Bible or the Catholic Church. Christ did not condemn the Jewish religious leaders because they had special clothes or a liturgical language.

Papal infallibility was only made official in 1870, but it was the defacto vatican position centuries before that. And then, only when the Pope speaks "ex cathedra" ( full authority )
Yes, it means there is an unbroken line of successors of Peter and the Papacy is valid no matter how many popes were corrupt (you only mentioned 8 while there are actually about 10 out of 266 Popes). Lineage (like the American presidency) does not depend upon the whether a Pope is impeccable or not. It would be great if every person that holds a position of authority were always impeccable, but history tells us this is not the case no matter what office you want to look at.
I would like to see a video about the good Popes as well, Todd. Just to balance things out a bit. I'm pretty sure there were a few genuine followers of Christ among them.
There probably were. However, the point is: If the popes truly were an unbroken line of Vicars of Christ, they should _all_ have been like that. Just one pope behaving badly is enough to refute the claim that the pope is the vicar of Christ.
@@loadz03 Sorry, but that argument does not fly. A tree is known by its fruit. It's one thing to sometimes fall into sin. Its another to completely give yourself over to sin. If you love Christ, you'll hate your sins. These popes clearly did not hate their sins.

@@levifox2818 Yes absolutely I can give an example, he has accused in prior videos of Catholics the sin of worshipping statues over God. Todd is absolutely guilty of the sin of lying, which is a serious sin.
@@dman7668 There are Catholics, whether you do or don’t, who worship Mary statues and statues of saints. That isn’t a lie. Purgatory in Catholic theology is a place where we pay for our remaining venial sins. In effect, by suffering, the one in purgatory is earning the remaining difference for heaven. That maybe a bit of an over simplification, but it’s not a lie either.
@@levifox2818 No. That isn't how purgation works. Purgation is not earning your way into heaven. If that's how you are understanding it, allow me to correct that misunderstanding. Catholics are not teaching, nor have they ever believed one is earning salvation in purgation. Everyone in purgatory has already gone through what is called the particular judgment. This will happen to you also someday. Once this particular judgement is done, your fate is revealed and either you are saved or not saved. People in purgatory are not earning salvation. They already have it. I hope this clears up that misunderstanding on Catholic belief. Jesus also alludes to this in the Bible when he talks about how one will not get out of prison until they pay the last penny. He isn't talking about Hell because nobody gets out of it, and he isn't talking about heaven since that isn't where people are held prisoner. Hence purgatory. A place between. It isn't a damaging doctrine and I've never understood Protestants disgust with the idea. As far as Catholics worshipping Mary, that would be idolatry and that would be a sin. However the Catholic Church has already explained that. I don't have any control over Catholics who misunderstand their own religion. I've never met a Catholic that worshipped Mary in place of God personally. If I did I would give the Churches position on that subject.
In RE lessons at RC schools kids are indoctrinated to accept without question that every pope is inspired by the Holy Spirit and teaches the church only God's truth no matter how ungodly he may be in his personal life. The most effective way of leading people astray from God's truth is by convincing them that the Bible is unreliable and only popes and other RC theologians are given the wisdom from the Holy Spirit to interpret the Scriptures correctly. The fact that Catholicism can't be found anywhere in the NT and therefore can't possibly come from God, is not a valid argument from an RC perspective. Everyone who doesn't accept Catholicism is a heretic and popes, whether good or evil, are to be believed when they claim to speak for God. When a pope openly speaks against Christ, eg Francis saying that the way of the cross is the history of God's failure, Catholics will simply consider that a pope's personal beliefs don't have to agree with the beliefs he officially passes to the church.

All men including the church fathers were imperfect sinners. You don't judge what's true by them alone. The scriptures are the sole God breathe authority. You test all doctrines of men by the scriptures. A d that includes the church fathers who were great men of God, but got some things wrong.

I like listening to Wretched Radio, but this is not a good argument for claiming the line of Popes is broken. It's just another testament for how God continues to love us and work with us no matter how broken we are. Look at the Judges of Israel that God appointed. Eli and his sons failed God with their sins, but God continued the line with Samuel. Look at the line of King David that God swore to make into an eternal kingdom. David, a man after God's own heart, killed his loyal soldier to sleep with his wife! Doesn't that sound familiar to some of these popes? The line of David had some good kings and some very evil kings who butchered babies and committed idolatry, and yet God kept the line going due to His promises to David. The line continued up until Jesus, the King of Kings. Jesus, the son of God, came from a line of very bad people. The twelve disciples of Jesus included Judas, who betrayed his master for silver! Then, there's also Peter, whom Jesus appointed as the first Pope, who denied Jesus three times. Don't you see that the argument that the Popes can't be an unbroken line of succession from Peter due to the sinful nature of a handful of them, is incorrect logic? It is more like proof that it is from God because God continues to work with us no matter how much we mess up. His love and His blood frees us from all sin. Praise be to God that He loves us and forgives us of our sins.

Wow, that was about as bad as it could get! And RCC claims to be the true church? I am grateful for the reformation and the reformed theology that emerged from it. What a blessing to be justified by faith alone (sola fide). Soli Deo gloria
7:01 is logically inconsistent. Judah was ruled by plenty of wicked kings who worshipped pagan gods and even sacrificed their children. In fact, the proportion of good kings to bad kings is far worse than that of the papacy. If we determine that great evil voids a line of succession, then we must therefore conclude that Jesus Christ is an illegitimate Messiah since there is no unbroken succession from Kind David to Christ. The Jews during the time of the divided kingdom would have had to conclude that Judaism was not the true religion. I am not a Catholic, but the argument is poor nonetheless.
I don’t think that follows. The Messianic line was biological. The Papacy cannot be-they don’t let Pope’s marry. As long as the line of David lasted, it didn’t matter if the kings were wicked. The Papacy is supposed to be an unbroken line of Vicars of Christ. As soon as one fails to meet that title, the line is broken.
@@levifox2818 The prophecy from Jermiah says someone will always sit on the throne of King David's kingdom. That person is the Pope. Otherwise it would make his prophecy false which he isn't. There cannot be anybody else but a Christian sitting on King David's earthly throne.
@@levifox2818 Uh, no. You are not understanding what happened in this moment of the Bible. The Popes are NOT claiming to be of the line of King David. I think you are misunderstanding something there. Let's back track Jeremiah. When he says that someone will always sit on the throne of King David, we cannot just insert Jesus into this and say yeah, nobody on earth is sitting on the throne of King David because Jesus is sitting on it in Heaven. No, no that is not how you interpret Jeremiah's prophecy. You see, King David's kingdom is not in heaven, the Prophet Jeremiah is not talking about Jesus in Heaven always sitting on the thrown of King David. He is specifically saying that someone will always sit on the throne of King David. King Davids throne is on earth where we are right now. He never says that person sitting on the throne will always be OF THE LINE of King David. See how that works? Allow me to continue. Isaiah 22:22 “Then I will set the KEY of the house of DAVID on his shoulder, When he opens no one will shut, When he shuts no one will open." So, we see here this person is being given authority over the house of DAVID. He is not in Heaven, he is on earth. "I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will put your AUTHORITY in his hand, and he will be a FATHER to the dwellers of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. " FUN FACT: The word “pope" is a Latin endearment for “pater”. Pater means “father” in Latin Contrast what happens here in the New Testament. Read this next. We can clearly see the typology and connection of the line of King David's ministers passing to Saint Peter. Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." We can see Matthew 16:19 is echoing Isaiah. Peter is absolutely, beyond reasonable doubt, sitting in a position of authority on King David's earthly throne. As a sort of royal overseer, or prime minister. This is a fact as far as I am concerned and the proof is incontrovertible and cannot be challenged. Revelation 3:7 To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the One who is holy and true, who holds the KEY of David. What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open. Saint Peter has authority to bind and loose. This demonstrates his supreme authority God has handed to him to govern the Church here on earth. What he shuts none may open. What he looses is loosed in heaven. Authority in heaven as well as on earth. The Popes are given the authority Jesus handed Saint Peter and so on and so forth. Apostolic succession is not an opinion, it's obviously a fact. The early Church also knew it was a fact. As evidenced by these extra-biblical writings which corroborate what the bible says. We can see here that you are subject to the authority of the Papacy. You personally Levi. Read what Saint Augustine wrote. He confirms what I say. For if the lineal succession of bishops is to be taken into account, with how much more certainty and benefit to the Church do we reckon back till we reach Peter himself, to whom, as bearing in a figure the whole Church, the Lord said: ‘Upon this rock will I build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it !’ The successor of Peter was Linus, and his successors in unbroken continuity were these: - Clement, Anacletus, Evaristus, Alexander, Sixtus, Telesphorus, Iginus, Anicetus, Pius, Soter, Eleutherius, Victor, Zephirinus, Calixtus, Urbanus, Pontianus, Antherus, Fabianus, Cornelius, Lucius, Stephanus, Xystus, Dionysius, Felix, Eutychianus, Gaius, Marcellinus, Marcellus, Eusebius, Miltiades, Sylvester, Marcus, Julius, Liberius, Damasus, and Siricius, whose successor is the present Bishop Anastasius. In this order of succession no Donatist bishop is found. But, reversing the natural course of things, the Donatists sent to Rome from Africa an ordained bishop, who, putting himself at the head of a few Africans in the great metropolis, gave some notoriety to the name of “mountain men,” or Cutzupits, by which they were known.” Augustine, To Generosus, Epistle 53:2 (A.D. 400). Saint Augustine seems to be completely aware that Apostolic succession is true. “For, since ye are subject to the bishop as to Jesus Christ, ye appear to me to live not after the manner of men, but according to Jesus Christ, who died for us, in order, by believing in His death, ye may escape from death. It is therefore necessary that, as ye indeed do, so without the bishop ye should do nothing, but should also be subject to the presbytery, as to the apostle of Jesus Christ, who is our hope, in whom, if we live, we shall [at last] be found. It is fitting also that the deacons, as being [the ministers] of the mysteries of Jesus Christ, should in every respect be pleasing to all. For they are not ministers of meat and drink, but servants of the Church of God. They are bound, therefore, to avoid all grounds of accusation [against them], as they would do fire.” Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Trallians, 2 (c. A.D. 110). I hope that suffices. I will get back to our discussion on Purgation later. I am very busy as a father of 2 and working in healthcare. I thank you for your time reading any of this. I probably wouldn't read my wall of text. God bless.
Yikes. I never imagined it was that bad. Here's the thing about the succession from Peter. If you are a true follower of Christ, then you have received the gospel from the apostles, from Christ himself. It started with them and somehow came down through history to you. There is nothing special about any one link in the chain. Even the greatest of men that we revere had their flaws. Those flaws remind us that there is only one Christ.
@@dman7668 From your so many comments on this channel, I can see how terribly you've twisted Scripture--just as the father of lies does. I'm still wondering whether you are actually demon possessed, willingly serve the devil, or are just badly deceived. You continue to defend the indefensible--equating sinful men and their so-called authority with God and His authority. Satan wants to be God and attempts to usurp His authority--this is what the RCC has been following. In John 17 Jesus called the Heavenly Father HOLY FATHER and the RCC calls the pope "holy father" too. It doesn't take a genius to see whose agenda the RCC has been furthering. I can only pray again that God will give you the deliverance that you need. Only the Holy Spirit can make you fully submit to the One True God--Yahweh--to be able to resist the devil, so that he will flee from you; and this sure needs humility. I'm not going to respond to you any further.
Here’s some major problems I have with the Catholic Church. He wears a gold like crown 👑. His followers call him the holy father. He accepts worship from huge crowds that adore him.
Arnt all Popes so called scandalous? Being how the Catholic church dont preach the "FULL GOSPEL"? And they worship Mary, and dont believe in the Deity of Jesus like I do😁... Come at me bro...(LOL).. Love you brother Todd...
@@dman7668 Bowing in reverence to the likeness of, speaking to in prayerful words, exulting with grandiose words of praise, all together can only be called worship.
@@levifox2818 Worship has different meaning, showing respect to images of blessed Mother for example is not wrong or offensive to God. In fact many examples in the Bible have been given where an angel appears and the person encountering that angel fell on their knees. These are not evil actions. What grandiose praise are you referring to? We normal Christians don't knock intercession prayer to the saints. This is a Church normative in Christianity , it's only strange to you because you are a protestant. However there are more Catholics then Protestants in the world and they don't find this weird. This is normal Christian behavior.
@@dman7668 Bowing before a graven image is not accepted in the Bible. Here is an angels reaction to being worshiped (bowed down to)-“Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10). This is the same reaction Peter had when he was bowed to. When you ask someone to intercede for you, do you exult them as many published prayers to Mary do? She is not omnipresent, and cannot hear all men who pray to her.
@@levifox2818 Praying to Mary isn't wrong. It would be wise for a man to seek her intercession. It isn't banned anywhere in the Bible and as I said before this is a Christian normative. Yes absolutely the Angel did tell him not to bow, however the act of bowing was not an offense to God. In fact I knew you were going to use this exact example when this subject would be brought up. You are quite predictable on these matters and did not disappoint me. 👏. This was not done out of some act of worshipping the angel, rather this was am act of respect. Worship doesn't always mean the worship you are thinking about when you think of the word worship. I would also like to add, how do you know that the virgin Mary cannot hear our prayers? How did you come to that information? Is that found in the Bible or are you speculating?
Nothing here disproves a line of succession. You can have 30 bad presidents in a row that started with one good one. Or a 100 bad kings that started with one great king, that doesn’t disprove the line of succession. Also, how about sources instead a list of claims. As a “fan” of the Borgias, most of those accusations are historically false written by their enemies, if that’s the case with him that puts into doubt all the claims you made about all the rest. It is current year, you have to do better vids than this.

@@alpha4IV You will find him in Acts 8. You will also find people running around in the New Testament and preaching a false gospel, "another gospel that is not another". To cut a long story short and get to the heart of the matter quickly. If you have two churches, both claiming to be the true church, what is the only way to prove which is which? The original true church will still be teaching what the original apostles and Jesus taught. And there is no other way to do this than to compare each churche's teaching to the Bible teachings. This is why Catholics are so keen to push Solar Scriptura. Solar Scriptura gets rid of the Bible, in other words, it gets rid of the evidence. (I may have "Solar" spelt incorrectly)
@@glenwillson5073 Do you know what eisegesis is, pat? or what a rhetorical question is. @@alpha4IV Its been a quite some years since I read about Simon Magus. You obviously fancy yourself a scholar, you could research him. Being a scholar, you may be too clever, to think the Bible is an actual source, I suppose. Its obvious that Simon Peter could not have been the first Pope because of what I said from "To cut a long story short ...." onwards. Evidence for the claim that Peter was the first Pope is non-existent . If there was evidence aplenty about Simon Magus, it would not have been possible to pass him off as Peter. If you read what the Bible says about Simon Magus, there is a subtle suggestion of prophecy as to the problem and danger he would pose to the Church of God in the future. I don't mind if people don't think there is enough historical evidence to easily put Simon Magus up as a contender for first Pope. The real point I am making is that it could not have been Peter.
This doesn’t refute the office of the pope. Catholics acknowledge that we’ve had many evil popes. You might ask, “why remain Catholic then?” Because the office of pope was given to us by Our Lord. Jesus appoints Peter as the head of the Apostles and gives to him alone the “keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 16). Papal infallibility means that the pope will never bind the Church in error when teaching on faith or morals, while speaking from the chair of Peter. It doesn’t guarantee his sanctity. Leaving the Church because of an evil pope would be like leaving Jesus because of Judas. Another example is King David. His immoral behaviour as king (adultery and murder) doesn’t strip him of authority as the King of Israel.
Don't forget that Pope Peter denied Christ three times, Todd, and that Judas, one of the first bishops, betrayed Christ to the Sanhedrin (whose authority at the time, despite its corruption, was nevertheless acknowledged by Christ - Matthew 23-:2-3). The miracle is that, despite such scandalous leadership down the centuries, the Catholic Church is still here 2000 years later.
Pope Peter?, in your dreams. You are confusing Simon Peter with Simon Magus the creator and first leader of the Catholic church. The Church of God has also been here for 2000 years also.
Ouch! I can feel the Catholic pain from way over here where I stand on the Protestant side. A brutally honest summation of the "linage" of the popes. TKO 😵
Catholicism is indeed a religion (Christ didn't teach religion, btw) and a political movement. And many people, mistake Catholicism and Christianity for the same thing.
You might want to read what Jesus told the Samaritan woman in Jhn 4:24. That is a very pro-religion statement where He says God's followers must worship Him the way He commanded. You should also read what was a very clear pro-religion statement in Matt. 5:17-20.

There is absolutely nothing in the Scriptures that even remotely suggest that Peter was ever in Rome, little own the "first pope".

Can you give an example of a misrepresentation Mr. Friel has given of the Catholic Church.
@@levifox2818 Yes absolutely I can give an example, he has accused in prior videos of Catholics the sin of worshipping statues over God. He has also accused and intentionally misrepresented the Catholic doctrine of purgatory, teaching in his videos that we believe we are earning our way to heaven, which is not what the doctrine teaches. Todd is absolutely guilty of the sin of lying, which is a serious sin.
@@dman7668
There are Catholics, whether you do or don’t, who worship Mary statues and statues of saints. That isn’t a lie. Purgatory in Catholic theology is a place where we pay for our remaining venial sins. In effect, by suffering, the one in purgatory is earning the remaining difference for heaven. That maybe a bit of an over simplification, but it’s not a lie either.
@@levifox2818
No.
@Wretched Keep bringing out that Work!!!!

Pope Clement VII (1523-1534), also a Medici, whose power-politicking with France, Spain, and Germany got Rome sacked.

Actually reading your response that is an excellent well thought out point I had not considered.

The prophecy from Jermiah says someone will always sit on the throne of King David's kingdom. That person is the Pope. Otherwise it would make his prophecy false which he isn't. There cannot be anybody else but a Christian sitting on King David's earthly throne.
@@dman7668
Jesus is the one who remains on the throne forever. The Popes aren’t of the line of David. Jesus is the Son of David prophesied.
@@levifox2818
Uh, no.
Isaiah 22:22
“Then I will set the KEY of the house of DAVID on his shoulder, When he opens no one will shut, When he shuts no one will open."
So, we see here this person is being given authority over the house of DAVID. He is not in Heaven, he is on earth.
"I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will put your AUTHORITY in his hand, and he will be a FATHER to the dwellers of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. "
FUN FACT:
The word “pope" is a Latin endearment for “pater”. Pater means “father” in Latin
Contrast what happens here in the New Testament. Read this next. We can clearly see the typology and connection of the line of King David's ministers passing to Saint Peter.
Matthew 16:19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
We can see Matthew 16:19 is echoing Isaiah. Peter is absolutely, beyond reasonable doubt, sitting in a position of authority on King David's earthly throne. As a sort of royal overseer, or prime minister. This is a fact as far as I am concerned and the proof is incontrovertible and cannot be challenged.
Revelation 3:7
To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the One who is holy and true, who holds the KEY of David.

@@levifox2818
Praying to Mary isn't wrong. It would be wise for a man to seek her intercession. It isn't banned anywhere in the Bible and as I said before this is a Christian normative. I am not asking you where the character of Simon Magus appears in the Bible I’m asking you where you’re getting your ridiculous claim that history says that he’s the founder of the Catholic Church. not the biblical character not what’s in the Bible but where you’re getting your historical information from what is your source and who taught you that or where did you read it first? quit using the Bible as your scapegoat, Catholics read the Bible too and so the atheist, try better or all you will ever be is a troll.
You need to cite your sources on this stuff please
its documented well known history, its like saying cite your sources that Bill Clinton was US president
This doesn’t refute the office of the pope. Catholics acknowledge that we’ve had many evil popes.
You might ask, “why remain Catholic then?”
Because the office of pope was given to us by Our Lord.
You are nothing but a blasphemer and a liar if you can seriously call any of these Godless popes Christ’s own representatives on earth.
The devil is also still here…
@@flutep2069 And he's been trying to pull down the Church Christ founded ever since its inception.
@@timhawley3721 They will pay for their sins. It's the office I respect, not so much some of the men who have occupied it.
TKO 😵
No, not really TKO. All you proved is that Pope are sinners too, hardly a revelation.
Christianity is a religion I thought.
@@dman7668
It is. Some people prefer to try and distinguish it, but I don’t find that convincing. It’s a set of beliefs and practices centered around God, so it’s a religion.
