She’s a living legend for us Asians. She was and still is revolutionary in the music industry. Not only that, she so damn smart she got into Columbia University but dropped out to focus on her music. She has so many hits - not to mention she write and produce her own music. My favorites are ‘Colors’, ‘Sakura Drops’, ‘Prisoner of Love’ and ‘Goodbye Happiness’.
I'm not Asian but I used to carry her albums and music vids with me even while in military training in '03. Few of my fellow Marines were surprised at how well she pulled off singing in both English and Japanese with her being from NY. Fast forward to the 2020s and one of our OTF coaches play her classic songs for about a year or two before the Shanghai Lockdown shut us all down.
not asian, only Japan
I'm from the UK and she was not only my introduction to music in other languages but still remains my favorite of them. She really managed to bring an etherealness to pop that was palletable and still mainstream friendly. You could also hear her inspirations while she sounded entirely her own.
but yeah I've been living in the US a while as well and it's crazy how people not only in Amerca - Europe and of course Japan ( I'm assuming a lot of Asia ) associate her to nostalgia and constantly come back to her.
@@saiko-rz7jb if we are going to be so technical like that then the success of movies like Parasite and idol groups like Black Pink are purely belong to Korea? Lisa is Thai but since she’s successful due to K-pop, me as a Thai can’t be proud of her as a Thai person? We have enough racism AGAINST us. Let’s not be racist among ourselves.
I whistle Sakura drops on the daily
She needs a US tour. It’s a lifelong dream for me to see her live
Yes same here I love her music
Same same.
I saw her in 2010 in LA 😭 it was amazing
World tour!!
She does! Her last biggest US tour was This Is The One. She’s so talented!
It's such a crime that she's essentially unknown in U.S. aside from being attached to the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Some people are online thinking she's a new K-Pop girl which is insulting given her tenure in the industry but flattering considering her age lol Her media presence in the U.S is very niched only real gamers and anime folk are aware of her but real fans that know her catalogue knew AUTOMATIC. I would have really freaked if she performed something from her DISTANCE album.
her name isn korean

No song that I personally care about :( She has SO many better ones
Simple and Clean
Why is she so underrated? She’s queen.
Maybe in the US, but she was like one of the faces of jpop in the mid 2000s
@@ciello___8307 yeah, she is underrated here in the US most people know her from kingdom hearts
Not underrated in Eastern Asia
@@gurakko_zetta25 she’s underrated over here
this crowd doesn't know how lucky they are! Where's the energy! I would looooove to see Utada live ;( like others said I wish she had a US tour!!
I didn't even know that Utada Hikaru performed at Coachella this year 😭
She's the artist that introduced me to not only Japanese music but foreign music in general. There's just something about her music that stands out to me. First Love, Beautiful World (from Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone), Hikari/Simple and Clean (from Kingdom Hearts II), Passion/Sanctuary (from Kindom Hearts III), Flavor of Life (from Hana Yori Dango), Sakura, Traveling, Deep River, Keep Tryin', Blue, Colors, Heart Station, and Stay Gold are some of the songs I love from her. She also went on a long hiatus back then. So happy to see her performing here 😭
Way before Korean wave, she's 1 of Japanese Diva that so talented and legendary. I wish she can bring old memories of high quality songs that ever made.
Shes the original asian sensation before all the kpop did
and what about hamasaki ayumi?
Actually there was a soft wave of kpop coming overseas right around this same time. I was way into it. Hah.
@12 post meridiem and koda kumi? I love jpop
…ever heard her version of Boulevard Of Broken Dreams?!?!…all the aforementioned people don’t have the blue-blood of J-Pop history like she comes from-including her parents. She doesn’t make records for cheap fame and trends, otherwise she wouldn’t come out at this point after* making record after record and living her own life.
People have no idea.
Exactly. Utada's album 'First Love' is the one that sold more than any other J-pop albums in history to date, and the true piece of music which elevated the status of Asian pop to the globe.
Hearing her sing her iconic First Love at her age and still reaching the high notes makes my heart ache like the first time I heard that song in my life about a decade ago. That's when you know a singer truly reached your heart and soul.
At her age? Mate, she's only 39 🤣🤣🤣
@@infaereldmainard4929 i had to check because he made it sound like she was in her 60s or 70s
Right - getting teary eyed over here
“At her age” 💀 She’s still so young lool
She is legend. I still remember bought her cassette back then when I'm in Highschool. 20 years later, she is still stunning.
Utada was so wonderful for us that knew her in Japan, in the 90s! She’s amazing and we non Asians also love her! ❤🎉 wish I could’ve seen her! These people are lucky! 🍀
I got goosebumps i didnt expect she will sing her classic FIRST LOVE
I’m about to cry 😢
For me, Utada Hikaru is one of the pioneers why the world is now appreciating music in Asia.
There may be some other Asians who became famous but Utada is a legend.
I am 30 years old and I have been listening to her since I was 10...

Same here ❤
I'm so mad at the people who were booing her. She is a LEGEND.

Didn't know that she performed at Coachella too!
Where have I been.
She is an evergreen Superstar
Ikr, my heart jumped out of my chest when I found out
I think it was one of those surprises like 2NE1
Those people at Coachella are fucking lucky. I would’ve went to Coachella just to see her!!!! 😭😭😭😭
omg she literally slayeddddd First Love. The crowd went so quiet like they were actually listening lol. Her voice sounds so strong! Always impresses me Utada mostly performs her songs in the same key they were recorded. A song when she was 16. Very underrated as a vocalist, imo.
20+ years later and she still looks stunning
Her performance always gives me goosebumps. ❤ been a fan of her for over 20 years
Feel the same
Same here
Yes I liked her since I was junior high too
Thank you for this!
NO WAY. I don’t like Coachella but I woulda been singing my heart out
Dude same 😭😭😭
Same!!!
Thank you so much 😭👍💖
Grew up in Japan listening to Utada Hikaru, Beautiful 😭❤️👏🏽
Thanks for uploading this video! Hikki is just way too amazing! Hope to see your live performance once in my lifetime.
A true legend. Automatic is just a classic... And hearing another classic like first love brings so mich nostalgia. Thank you Utada. You are the best.
20 years of my favorite jpop singer I grew up with in Tokyo, Japan 🗾 how nostalgic it is and I love you so much Utada Hikaru!
thank you for the recording omg... this must be a treasure to memorize the moment!
Oh my gosh!!! First Love!! I remember listening and singing this with my friends back int the day. 👏🏻❤️
Thank you for sharing!! I went during second weekend and missed this legendary performer!
Whoever you are, thank you for uploading this. She's the one person I want to see perform live the most. You guys are so lucky.
Wow thank you for recording
It’s amazing to listen her live in States!
PLEASE utada have a US Tour! I want to be able to see you live so bad!!!! I've been a fan since the early 2000s and you are by far my favorite japanese artist till this day!
OMG! I grew up with Kingdom Hearts and Utada’s beautiful voice and songs. Simple and Clean was the perfect song choice for the game. Hearing her sing it live in 2022 makes me so happy, as if she’s keeping such an extraordinary 2000s game alive! She sounds just as wonderful as she did back then! ❤
This crowd was so so, because I would’ve been livid in excitement when she starting singing Automatic
She still got it!!!
Beautiful legend. Fell in love with the Japanese language thanks to Utada Hikaru in 2002 after hearing First Love. She's overcome so much to be where she is now and still doing her best to inspire the next generation. ❤️
She has an amazing live on Netflix for anyone who's interested. The storytelling through the lyrics are something that will be missed by many but a blessing understood by some. Play a love song 🎵
yo chills thanks for uploading
I knew her through Kingdom Hearts when I was about 11 and I got addicted to her music. I listened to all of her albums and I have followed her since. I have never liked j-pop, and even if I liked some manga or anime as a teen, I don't think you can like the rest of Japanese things just because they're Japanese. Her music stands out and she has a unique style and voice. It's a pity she's not listened to internationally. It is truly something else. It bothers me that only people interested in Japan get to know her. Music shouldn't work like that, but it is how it is. Great, great artist, very creative and unique voice and style. Thank you Utada Hikaru ❤
WHAAAT?! i didnt know she performed at COACHELLA?!?!? i love herrr. her kingdom hearts songs have a very special place in my heart.
Makes me cry, She is a LEGEND ❤️
Thank you ❤️
Im 30 been a fan since i was 9
Its been 21 years since i live this ICON ❤
I LOVE this sooooo much. I've been a fan of hers here in the US for like 10+ years... I SOOOOO wish she'd get more traction here. Her voice is so pretty and she's so great.
Thank you for your uploading. She's a much more better artist now.
Lots of water under the bridge.
I can't believe two of these songs are ones she made
when she was fifteen years old.
People and things age and change over time, except Utada's absolutely amazing voice
The guy singing along is a vibe 🥲🥲 thank you for posting this I’ve been looking for it since weekend 1
Haha you caught me 😅 glad you enjoyed it!
Haha I would’ve been singing along like crazy! Especially to Simple and Clean!
I would've sang along to every song LOL!
I used to sing with my friend in Tokyo. Her reaction to me busting out with Wait & See was the funniest thing. I have that video somewhere :D
Hikki (Utada Hikaru) although is a Japanese artist, inspired so many 1st generation kpop artists. I remember watching 1st gen gg, Baby VOX film a commercial with Hikki’s “Movin On Without You,” playing in the background. And Boa, the iconic soloist of 1st gen kpop learned to sing Hikki’s songs like “First Love” and “Automatic” to improve her Japanese when she was still a trainee.
It’s so amazing to have followed Utada Hikaru’s career for so long and to have seen the impact she’s created all around her. She DESERVED to be on the Coachella stage. ❤
❤️ Utada Hikaru .. I love all her songs.. 👍❤️❤️
thank you!!!
Face my fears is gonna be my favorite song.
Utada Hikaru is a true legend
Awesome! One of the very few musical artists that I will gladly listen to until the day I die. She was the absolute best choice for the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
I am over here being jealous while singing along at 6am she is one of my favorite Japanese artist!
Love Hikki since early 2000s
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
She is amazing!
I've know of her for 21 years now first song I heard was wait and see on a japanese online radio station she's one of the best in jpop
Sheeesh I would be singing my heart out If I was there 😭 I can’t speak Japanese but best believe I sang along with her at times on songs . She’s always been a vibe
Thanks! 🫂
i think the wind on her outfit really makes her look so stunninggggggg
I love her.
Thank you from Japan!!
I LOVE Automatic! I'm so glad she sang it here.
