    I’m 75, and having played this swing since Swing Machine Golf came out in 2007 or so, I can testify that the proper coil is critical to making this swing work for you. As I got into my 70’s and lost some flexibility, my tendency was to let my hips turn more going back so I could make a full backswing. By lifting my front heel and letting my hips turn nearly as much as my shoulders, I could make a nice, full backswing. Problem is, from there I had no coil to uncoil from. I had no distance, no consistency, my golf game went squarely into the toilet. After fighting that for a few years, I had an “aha” moment and saw the problem for what it was - failure to keep my lower body stable in the backswing. My solution? A shorter backswing! I found that with what feels like a half or 3/4 backswing, I can have minimal hip turn with a tight coil that feels like it should feel. Even with the shorter backswing, with that tight coil I can fire the lower body and whip the arms/club unit through impact with nearly the same club head speed as I did 10 years ago. To those of you working on this swing, do NOT get lazy and allow your hips to turn too much in the backswing. You need that tight coil; it is a crucial element in the swing that Paul teaches.

      Very good. Now this is exactly what I keep saying. You need some torque. This doesn't mean you are cranking way around and hurting yourself. You coil until you feel tight. Then you uncoil. If you lift the heel and turn the shoulders more that give you a feeling of power in your arms to hit hard. This is not what we are doing. Keep up the good work.

    I have found that putting a club, or around the house a small wooden pole, behind your back and through both elbows me the exact feeling a tight coil. The hips can only turn so far and you can also work on your shoulder turn with this practice drill. This drill shows me that I need to improve my flexibility. 1/4 turn hips and you can feel the tightness.

    I bought the Body Swing which is awesome. I'm a beginner. I usually feel the tightness in my upper arm/shoulder and I was starting to feel the spring-like movement, and my shots were good. After a couple weeks I was focusing on coiling more in order to get more power. With that, I forgot about the tight feeling and when I looked at a video of myself, I was bending my arm so much, trying to coil more, I was almost wrapping my arm around my neck. My shots were awful, topping it, slicing it. I had to re-visit this tip, and once I did, I focused on the tight feeling and I got back on track and my arm wasn't bending as much (without even thinking about keeping my arm straighter). I just focused on the tight feeling. Shots are back to getting better.

      Glad it was helpful! Doing something new/right will feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately people quit after 3 tries and go right back to their golf swing that doesn't work. Focus on something. Keep doing it until you get over the hump where it doesn't feel that bad and you are seeing results. Tee it up to make it easy to change. You can do it. The coil is unmistakably tight. This is what you want and this is how you know you are doing it.

    I've been searching the web for a long time for someone to confirm the feeling of tension in the left oblique muscle during the backswing, and here it is!! Since I've been concentrating on "COIL" instead of "TURN", I've improved my game by 300%... My swing thought is to push my left knee towards the target (Its just a feeling, actually moves towards the ball a bit) and move my left shoulder away from the target. This stretches my left oblique muscle and my spine stays in the center because I have two forces in opposite directions. What's more amazing, is the fact that my backswing is ALWAYS the same, and consistency is the end result!!
    Awesome tip Paul... You've earned my subscription!!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 года назад +1

      Glad you found me. We are now on the same page. This is a vital move in creating consistency. Yes, it repeats and it's a simple move. Once you get the arm unit working you are literally think about coil/uncoil to hit every shot. It's way easy than thinking about where the arms are throughout the whole swing. Just see your body as a spring. This is a simple repeatable image based on torque (which repeats 100% of the time).

    Ive played about 25 rounds since using the body swing method...its changed my game...definately more intense...but even though i have better shots...when it all clicks...is the fact that when i hit a weak shot...i can diagnose the problem...in general it is hitting with arms....which leads to over the top...or...im doing a good job with body turning and hips turning to start downswing but im not releasing or unhinging the golf club ...the arms are following the body...not leading...but im just holding on ..forgetting to release it...results in usually a weakshot to the right...i can hear it...feel it...then see it ..even if i keep my head down till the ball is gone......all this i feel is normal during a round....but before i couldnt diagnose the problem...now i can.....i step back and focus on these body swing drills...mainly the relaxed swing back &forth knee high not hitting the ball...focusing on supple wrists...hinging/unhinging as i swing back and forth with my body...making my arms feel like ropes....helps me to refocus on the next shot.....i think this is the most valuable lesson ive learned from you...."the ball is the teacher!"......

    Sometimes I feel that the backswing momentum of the club pulls my shoulders around into the coil (vs. the shoulders moving the club into the coil). I hope you can understand what I am saying.

    What I have found is that I had a tendency to "bounce back" slightly with my upper body when I reached that maximum coil, which I felt as a tension in my upper left back. Needless to say this bouncing threw off my transition and downswing. By holding this tension just a fraction longer, I do much better. Perhaps you could address this tendency. By the way, I had joined your site for about a couple of years in the past, and still am thinking about the many tips which I got from you!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 года назад

      You are the first person to ever mention the bounce back so this would be pretty rare. In watch people who try my technique sometimes they are trying to hold the lower body too stable and the crank the upper. In this process their hips don't even coil 45. So maybe this is what you are doing too. You coil the upper to move the hips to 45. If you need to move the hips to 45 because you haven't been moving them enough then do so. This bounce back really shouldn't be happening. So coil fully then immediately fire the the lower once you feel coiled.

    • @mikeschick8461

    Hi Paul if you keep your belt buckle at the ball and rotate your shoulders for the tightness than before the start of the downswing how far or open have your hips move on the backswing if they move 45° on the backswing should there be no tightness thanks for your help kindly advise Jack

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад

      They will move 45 going back. If your shoulders are 90 that is enough coil. Some, like Rory, can turn even more. If so, then turn as much as you can. Think of a spring. If you coiled the top the middle would get tight. The more you coil the tighter it would get. However much you coil a spring, the middle would always move half. So this is the image you want in your swing. When you uncoil your hips need to be as open as you can get them through impact. Most people are just facing the ball because they are never leading with the hips. Again, use the spring image. You coil the top you uncoil the bottom.

    Paul, I’ve been using your methodology for 12 years or so now, and at age 75 I just can’t coil like I used to. Would you recommend that I simply coil as best I can and live with a shorter backswing? Or should I allow the left heel to come off the ground and the hips to open up a bit more to facilitate a longer backswing? I’ve been wondering about this for awhile now and I’d appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 года назад +2

      This happens to a lot of people. Before settling for a shorter swing, I would look into stretching. I like Roger Fredericks videos and I am follow them myself. Next, if you can only coil about 70-75-80 degrees then yes maybe you lift the heel 1-2" just have to be careful. You need the torque. You get the spring-like effect and you don't need to hit with the arms. I can the shorter swing a young man's swing. When I do it it take every ounce of energy to hit the ball the same as if I do a full swing. So the short swing for you will not be that powerful. You need to know how much you are rotating first. Do so stretches to see if that gets you up there higher. Maybe you also check if your head is moving as you go back. Maybe you change how you are coiling back. Change to backwing trigger of turning your back to the target as you go back. This is a simple thought that can allow you to turn better. It might be something else but find what will make you coil better. You can also have us check you on my new app CoachLink. You can find it in the apple app or play store. This allows us to see you live on video anywhere in the world If you don't know how to install an app have a kid help you. We can then check you and make sure you are doing it right.

    Hi Paul. Thanks for all you do and share.
    I'm currently working through this coil in my Body Swing course. It is a new feeling for me. I've found that if I coil while restraining my hips (as you teach) then I loose the "fluid" feeling I used to have with my old (bad) swing and the coiling tension seems to quicken my reversal and shorten my overall swing duration.
    When coiling with restrained hips I am still able to consistently achieve the two finish position checkpoints but I no longer can feel the languid sensations I used to have when I turned my hips to a comfortable degree. My question is whether this quicker reversal and faster overall swing duration is correct and is what I should be feeling.
    I hope you can understand my question. Any insights will be appreciated.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your support. I truly appreciate it. Some people seem to overdo resisting the lower body. Keep in mind your hips still need to turn 45 on a 90 degree shoulder rotation. I think you are over doing it resisting too much. Once you check your hips you are going back smooth no jerky. This will allow you to reverse with the lower if you are thinking about using the lower. You need to think about doing it to do it. I would be working on this stuff at an easy pace then gradually speeding it up once you are better at it. We don't want to do too slow.
