      I have had my rfx m2 36 (coil) for 1.5 years, i will never ever go back to air or fox again! Switched from a fox factory kashima 150mm to 170mm on my stumpjumper.
      @jeff, you can switch between air/coil as often as you like to!! Please please try a coil setup on the fork, it will make you go back upp to have a look if if was a gnarly rockgarden or a piece of cotton you just smashed through.. as you stated ”i prefer a softer fork for traction”, well then there is only one option for you, really!
      To every one setting up a ohlins fork! The reconended settings are rqce performance oriented, if you are a mere mortal or like jeff and like traction and no armpump, go lower on the settings, i would say start at 10kg lower then your recomended settings in the manual!
      Much love!

    Much like they do with their moto stuff. They have a bank of compression and rebound tunes that a service center can drop in. Especially with you collecting data. Sounds like they could adjust the damping pretty easily to hit your desired sweet spot. Always enjoy your videos, keep it up!

    Thanks for this great review again! I switched from a 2018 Fox 36 Grip 2 to the Öhlins RXF 36 m.2 to try something different. Unfortunately I experienced the same overdamping for my low 68 kg bodyweight and could not find a sweet setup in a few month. I got an offer to tune the damping unit for 400 €, but after spending 1,300 € for the fork, I sold the Ö. Now very happy again with a 2021 Fox 36. I think the Ö is, like you said, a true racing fork for people with a proper bodyweight and aggressive riding style, too.

      @@elidenning6276 Vital Mtb did a review of Ext era, I have the one, it's great my conclusion is the same as theirs. But nothing wrong with more reviews and not eibfo to compare. But I love it. Very sensitive and plush yet very supportive. Feels stiffer less twist than fox 36, but I only notice that when doing fakies, but I notice the lack of stiction. I've not tried DVO, but not tried Stock fox fork i had Vorsprung Smashpoy in it. I think the spring was too firm for me, as the Ext is as supportive but much pusher and sensitive. But the Fox creaked horribly. But I did not film the last riding I did on it.

    Ohlins has been a racing suspension force since automotive since the 70s. Motos too. Nice to see them making suspension components for other, diverse application. I can see how they approach this from the auto/moto side. You can't adjust by taking the thing apart all the time. No plastic tokens or volume reducers are possible in an automotive application. All valving and chamber engineering. I hope they do well in this segment.

    Hey Jeff! You were complaining about the small bump compliance. Well, the Ohlins air springs come with a negative air chamber spacer installed that you can remove to improve small bump sensitivity. You will see the white spacer in that blue collar on the air spring. You may have to take the seal head off to remove it although the service manual recommends pushing it out with compressed air and then pulling the split-spacer off with your hands.

    If you have an ebike in your stable right now, this may be a good match for it. The added heft of the bike should utilize the supportive nature of this fork, particularly on some rowdy trails.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 года назад +3

      Dude, great idea! I don't currently have an eBike (and I have a couple requests out...) but I agree, that makes sense!!! The fork works awesome, and was more awesome when I had a backpack on... And when Logan rode it (he's 140lbs) he wasn't a fan. Ohlins has come soooo close to beating Fox with this, if they adjust their damping window ever so slightly they'd probably be my first choice.

    Having ridden a few other 3chamber forks... There is generally a quite slim airpressure window for the main to get it feel right... Also dont be afraid to get quite low with the main and basically use the ram from the midstroke on.
    Lastly as you run lower main pressure and the ramp chamber goes out of effect way before topout the fork returns not as fast as a normal air spring... You can run the rebound insane fast and still be perfectly controlled... Also upping the smallbump by doing that.

    I have a 2020 fox factory 36 grip 2 on my yeti sb 5.5 as a comparison and I have many of the same findings you do, but I have also noticed that I bottom out more often... my rider weight is around 190 with hip pack and I think I need to do more tuning, I'm just not clear as to where to go from where I am...

      Alex, thanks for the note! I'd think that at 190, and on a hardtail where the fork gets even more force, that it'd be working OK for ya. if you're bottoming too often, try going to 1 click of HSC. I found that running about 15 psi less than the factory rec worked well in the main chamber, and I'm like 20 psi less in the bottom chamber.

    I have this fork paired with the ttx18 air shock on my mondraker foxy. at just under 200lbs fully kitted, I kind of agree with most of Jeff's assessments here. it takes a bit to really dial in, and it's not a super plush "sofa" of a fork, so if that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere. what I do love about it over a fox 36 is it's high speed, high frequency composure. it's just so much more settled through chatter and successive medium-large chunky hits. This could be a function of being more in sync with the rear end of the bike too.

  • @peterchowra8022
    @peterchowra8022 3 года назад +3

    Jeff, you really should try the coil spring in this fork (one of the big benefits of the Öhlins forks is the ability to go back and forth between an air cartridge and a coil). It will address the harshness you felt and probably make better use of the supportive damping tune.
    In terms of cost, while you will need to find the right spring (i.e. buying more than one spring), the nice thing with the coil is you can change the travel on the coil shaft, so no additional spend required to change travel.

      Right on Sonik, I'm a little curious about that fork. The air spring felt great on this, and the ability to set it to ride a little higher in the travel was cool. Seems like that feature would be lost on the coil, but it'd also put a tad more weight on the damper, so I wonder if it'd end up being a better set up?

    Forcing the oil past shims on the main piston creates a lot of pressure interference, high vacuum, friction & heat, etc. Everybody knows this. They work around this issue but it is always there! TTx design moves away from this entirely! Ohlins is the only company to look at a shock absorber as it has been for many years & say that it could work better. So now there is TTx design & then there is every other shock in the world with the same old issues!

    Can you Anglo-Saxons at some point learn how to pronounce Öhlins? It’s not Ooolins, ö is a distinct character in our alphabet and is pronounced the way the French pronounce the oe combination, like œuf.

      @@th_js also not pronounced right. Actually he pronounces it Ohlins or Åhlins o and å can be the same sound in but not always. Å=ohh but O can also sound like that like Moss which a city but sounds like the English word Moss.
      Åpen=open I can't think of anything with nordic O but O can sound different. But the Ö in Öhlins is the same as Ø in Norway, English uses this sound. Like in girl, bird, bust, must, just, crust.
      Vital MTB did a review of the fork too, the guy doing the review is a swede, he pronounces it perfectly.

    • @th_js
      @th_js 3 года назад +2

      @@mtbboy1993 Exactly. Although here in Finland we call "Å" "ruotsalainen O", which means "Swedish O". As Jeff is American, I understand the mishap perfectly, though and it's not that bad. And yup, "Ohlins" is the O like in "door", "cove", "more" and "shore", whereas the correct way (Ö) is the same as in "Girl", "bird", etc, like you said. Also, Americans often murder the rest of the word too, for example, they say (pronounced the Finnish way): "Oulins", which means they leave the "h" out almost completely and add an unnecessary "u" to the word.. Completely pointless ramblings here, but we've now processed it and the case is closed. :)

    Would have been neat to have a motion instruments transducer on the rear shock , record some run with a 36 , leave the shock as it is then change the fork for the ohlins , do some runs again to show what effect changing the fork has on the rear shock . Great vid though
