This is a pretty decent way to incorporate the opening song into the stage version's plot. Kudos to the TV movie, hope this song's still in the live version coming up.
My friend played this movie at their birthday party, and while everyone was preparing to watch it, the intro/menu played over and over, and I surprisingly never got tired of it! It’s such a well sung song, and I’m having trouble getting it out of my head!
This is such a lame tv adaptation of Bye Bye Birdie but THIS is so so great. This should be incorporated into stage productions. Also every time Ursula is in this she steals it.
once, i transcribed this by recording it into audacity, part by part (including horns and drums) using the sounds on a Clavinova. this was for a jr. high production of bye bye birdie where the director really wanted to start with this exact arrangement.
I'd kill for female role in this show, so far I keep getting boys. Which sucks cause I love this musical and I don't even get to scream the birdie scream!
This song was not in the original 1960 Broadway production, it was added in the original 1963 film adaptation with Ann Margaret and the full extended-and better- version is in this tv film adaptation.
Lyrics: Bye Bye Birdie I'm gonna miss you so Bye Bye Birdie Why'd you have to go No more sunshine It's followed you away I'll cry, Birdie, 'Til you're home to stay I'll miss the way you smile, As though it's just for me And every single night I'll write you faithfully Bye Bye Birdie It's awful hard to bear Bye Bye Birdie Guess I'll always care We're gonna miss you terribly It's gonna be real tough To ease the pain, of course we've got A lot of Birdie stuff! Like my Birdie sweats, I wear them day and night! They're really out of sight My Birdie cola comforts me At all my soda breaks And every breakfast time, I munch my Birdie flakes! (me too!) The plastic Birdie statuettes Are really works of art! I wear my Birdie training bra To keep him near my heart Here on my calendar, I've marked the fateful day When he'll report to Uncle Sam And bravely march away Bye Bye Birdie The army's got you now I'll try, Birdie, To go on somehow I sigh, Birdie, each time you move those lips I die, Birdie, When you twist those hips You really turn me on I'm like a savage beast The army should make you A general at least! Bye Bye Birdie Do what you have to do Come back, Birdie, I will wait for you We'll be here for you

BLECCCH!! The entire movie was ruined by decision to turn the musical into a showcase for Ann-Margaret. Main characters were changed, songs were dropped. And whose bright idea was it to throw in the slapstick fast-motion ballet?
Its not that I hate Ann-Margaret. BBB was an established, beloved musical and a vehicle for the talents of Dick Van Dyke. The movie producer or director rewrote the movie musical to showcase Ann-Margaret. The best scene from an extremely long and boring variation of Birdie. If you see and enjoy this scene, forget the rest and go watch the 60s film instead. Much more energetic and watchable... and it eliminates the mediocre songs which this version includes.
I respectfully disagree. Maybe because I saw this one first, but I just couldn’t get into the 1963 film. While I do like that Kim and Hugo are given more to do, I just didn’t like a lot of the changes the film made. While I will agree that this version is not for everyone, I still think it is a worthy representation of why Bye Bye Birdie the musical is a good show.

I think this one did. Only because the song tries to have a narrative purpose in this one. I will give credit to Ann Margret for singing a reprise at the end of the 1963 film, signifying Kim’s growth.
