Rachel Goldberg-Polin, 54, is a soft-spoken teacher who grew up in Chicago.
She is remarkably comfortable in the unwanted role she has inhabited since shortly after Oct. 7: the international voice, face and conscience of the hostage crisis.
Please continue to pray for the safe return for her son from Gaza, Hersh Ben Perel Chana.

When I heard this incredibly brave mother pleading for her son's life at the rally. I really wanted to help. The first thing that came to mind was to take on a very hard mitzvah for me. I took on covering my hair. When I cover my hair every day, I say a prayer for all the hostages and the soldiers to come home soon. Hersh is always on my mind to come home as soon as possible. I want to end this mother's pain.
Rachel is a strong, courageous and dignified lady. We will continue to pray for the safety and return of Hersh and all the other hostages and for all the pain to come to an end. May Rachel have the strength to continue her fight. Sending love, light strength.
Beautiful message for rachel! Thank you
I'm not Jewish but am human and as such the needless suffering of anyone is appalling to me. I still believe he will come home to his family.
My heart goes out to Hersh and all the hostages, to the families and all the Jewish people. My G-d bless you and comfort you. ❤
As a Jewish mom in South Africa I am constantly praying for Hersch, your family, all rhe hostages still in captivity and those who've been released, all the families and all of Am Yisrael. I can't fathom what you must be going through 😢💔. Will keep praying for all of you. Sending all the strength and support that I possibly can🙏🙌🤗🌹
That's so heartwarming to hear!! Please do share the episode with as many people as possible!
Dear Rachel, we are here in New York praying for Hersch's safe return and your family and all hostages to come back home safely. 🙏 We share the names of hostages in daily tehilim reading groups.May Hashem hears and answers all our prayers 🙏 ❤
Cant imagine what this family is going through. She is such a brave women to appear on these interviews. We all hope and pray that all the hostages come home now bisrat Hashem.
Thanks so much!
Your strength throughout this hellish ordeal is inspirational.
I pray that your son and the other hostages come home soon.
G-d bless you and your family.
I am crying listening to this mother’s story. May God protect Hersch, and give support to his family.
Amen!
I'm an Asian. When I heard Sahar Bharuk, 25 yr boy was killed I couldn't bear up and cried for 3days and week by week I could not even sleep to hear about his tragedy through videos as I have my own very close relation of his age and I love so much looks alike Sahar. From the day I saw Sahar s photo that was kidnapped I prayed and wished him and all the others to get released, but day by day what I heard was one by one they killed burning our hearts every second but I did not stop praying for the other hostages to get released soon.May God bless their loved ones too.😢🙏
Rachel you are truly a light unto the nations of the world. We the Jewish people are so fortunate to have such an intelligent, graceful, dignified and peaceful human representing us. We pray for the safe return of Hersch Ben Perel Chana and the rest of the hostages.
Every human is sacred, and even more so, when they've been kidnapped in the most brutal way. Blessing for Hersh Ben Perel Chana and his well being. Wishing him a safe return to his/our homeland, Eretz Israel.
Feel terrible for her and pray to god for his safety and that he reaches his home soon. Luv from an Indian mom
Amen!
You might find you don't get many views because, as a Jewish mum in Israel, I can't even bear to think what you are going through and often can't bring myself to expose myself to see the stories of the hostages its worse than a horror movie. It makes us ill to think about it, and then we are in an even worse position. I'm going to try and watch and listen to you. I hope I can manage. Sending you much love and strength. Managed to hear it through. Thank you for telling the story. We will be davening for a safe return of Hirsch ben Peril Channah.
exactly! i feel exactly the same 😢
Thank you for hearing her story and hopefully many others will hear her story. Please do share!
Amazing mother. Amazing family. My heart goes out to the entire family.
I can not understand antisemitism. If any emotion has been triggered in me after Oct 7th, it’s the admiration of the Jewish people. I have come to respect and love them. I am Irish and Christian. But we all have things in common. All have fought for rights through the years but none more than the Jewish people. I know why they are God’s chosen people. I know how it started but I can see something in the Jewish people and communities that do not exist in others. At least not as strongly. Great trials bring about great strength. I am praying for all and for Israel to end this evil.
Thank you for your kind words !!
My heart absolutely aches for this woman…. As a mom… I cannot begin to tell you how much I feel for her..how she exhibits such strength is beyond my comprehension. I pray every single day for Hersh.. and all those suffering. Her story has touched me so… never give up hope. So many are sending light and love her way.. and for Hersh.
What an incredible woman. Staying calm an composed despite such extreme pain. May Hashem turn that pain into true happiness with the return of Hersh today!
This woman is so courageous and we are praying she is reunited with her son very soon!!
This was so powerful, heart wrenching and inspiring all at the same time, and it gave a personal window to who Hersh is as a person. Davening for Hersh Ben Chana Perel’s safe return, may we hear good news soon
I admire the interviewer. I would not know what to ask a mother in this circumstance. She has super-human strength right now. Psalm 34:18 "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Rachel- you are a lioness and an example for mothers everywhere. The fact that you are exploring every single avenue of wordly hishtadlus, while not stopping the constant tefila, is the biggest lesson to all of us as we navigate life's struggles, both big and small. I am davening for Hersh and for your family, you are my family now.
My heart breaks for all the israel citizens being held in Gaza..
Sending Prayers and Love.
💙🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱💙🙏🇭🇲
So powerful. Praying for the safe return of Hersh and all the hostages
I feel so terrible for her and all the hostages families. I can’t imagine seeing your child with their arm blown off and being loaded up into a truck to be taken hostage. She is so composed and such a beacon of strength and intelligence. I really hope and pray he gets released and is okay. I hope they all get all released or are found by the IDF. I think the only hope they have of being released is the IDF hammering Hamas and leave them begging for a break and willing to let go of all the rest of the hostages, but I also know the people with hostages in Gaza may not think that’s right. I hope they feel heard and respected but I can’t imagine having someone held hostage so I don’t know what the proper response is at this time. I am praying for them though and for extreme wisdom for the hostage negotiators.
Well said. I agree with all
Your thoughts. May this family be blessed and protected.
You are such an articulate dignified person undergoing a terrible experience. I really feel your pain. May HaShem bless you and keep you and your son Hersche. There is too much to say except that I pray for your family and especially for your son to be returned to you. ❤😢❤
Amen! Rachel's strength is incredible
My heart breaks for you every single minute. Hersh Ben Chana Perel is constantly in our thoughts and prayers. Just know that you’re definitely doing everything you possibly can do to. We must remember that help from Hashem can come in the blink of the eye. May you be zoche to hug Hersh today!! Dance at his wedding! And love his children!
From a mother with a broken heart
Thank you for this interview. We will continue to pray for this mother, my Jewish sister, and her son Hersch, my son, as Jewish people are all family.

The only positive that’s come from Hersh’s kidnapping has been the fact that the world has gained Rachel’s voice.
She is the epitome of grace.
Rachel, I’ve never met you, I am not Jewish, I’ve never been to Israel, but I feel like I know you. And I love you. Your strength is an example to us all.

I have nothing but prayers and admiration for this family. Her devotion to her principles and hope in the face of such absolute evil is so remarkable. Through Rachel’s posts and interviews, we truly get to know Hersh, who is such a delight and wonderful soul. I pray for them all daily and especially when lighting the Shabbat candles. Light and peace only Rachel, Hersh, his family and all am Israel. ❤️🇮🇱💙
**I’m here today on 4/26/24, the day after Hersh’s proof of life video was released.**
INCREDIBLE interview! I’m a completely non-religious, American half Jew. I’m also a music festival addict, and I’ve been to around a hundred, and deeply understand the culture of that and how peaceful and kind and accepting most people who attend these kinds of festivals are. Not that it matters, it’s just something that I understand in a specific level.
Every story I hear has resonated on the deepest levels, but I just have to say, this mom has somehow gained the superpower strength of public communications during the most incredibly stressful moment that could ever occur to any mother. Because, like she said, she’s speaking even though it’s painful emotionally and intellectually and spiritually, and even physically, she’s in palpable and tangible pain just speaking words, and like she said, there are many who just cannot because they are inconsolable and have just completely lost their abilities to communicate or be public, which is beyond understandable.
Just the level of compounded tragedy that she’s experiencing and expected to survive is beyond comprehension. To see the horror of the arm in the truck scene situation is a horror level of ABSOLUTE TERROR that I’m sure she’d have said on October 6th “I don’t think I could survive that level of grief.” Yet somehow, here she is, not just a voice for her son, not just a voice for all of the hostages, not just a voice for Israel, not just a voice for Jews, but a voice for all captives and a voice for all suffering and a voice for all humanity - which includes any innocent people and especially children in Gaza, which she clearly pointed out that since two things can be true at the same time, she has sympathy and compassion for those Palestinians (innocents, not Hamas, who are holding their OWN people captive, not Israel).
I don’t pray, but I’m praying for your family, that like you said, Hersh can be home to heal and hug and kiss his family once again, and that many, many decades from now, your kids, including Hersh, will bury you/the parents, and not the other way around.
My heart goes out to all jews, This woman has amazing strength i hope it gets her and hersch through all this, i know i would be a total mess if it was me. Hope you get back soon as well as all the other familys ❤
We need to start thinking about protecting the families of the hostages, have you seen what happened to the mother of Na’ama today in New York City? I have now officially lost my faith in mankind. How can we help? ❤
What happened?
What happened to her please do tell if you're going to drop a comment like that here....
She was at an event in New York City to ask for attention for her kidnapped daughter and when she came out of the building, horrible people were shouting at her “ shame on you“. They were pro Hamas and they were targeting her! I don’t understand why it has not been covered in the main media but you can find it online.
The Jewish chronicle and the channel of Mahyar Tousi here on RUclips covered it.
I love her sense of humor. When she "jokes" (in the absence of a better word) about her son being easily recognizable due to the fact he is missing an arm, or when she says that if her son's name was David Cohen, finding him would be even harder, it feels like she is making the jokes that she knows would make Hersh laugh. Just my opinion, of course, I could be wrong.
Prayers always for to the IDF and families. God willing you will all be home soon
WE LOVE YOU ALL . PRAYING FOR YOU ALL INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A PPL. YOUR EMUNA IS SO GENUINE MAY IT BE A ZCHUT FOR AM YISRAEL TO CONTINUE TO CONNECT TO OUR CORE FAITH KNOWING HASHEM LOVES EACH OF US AS HIS ONLY CHILD THAT HE WAITS TO HEAR FROM EVERY MOMENT. SO TOO IS YOUR LOVE AND DEVOTION . MAY WE ALL REUNITE WITH THE GEULA BMHERA BKAROV MAMASH. THAT ALL GOOD PREVAILS AND THE EVIL VANISHES. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY. BECAUSE YOUR STORY IS SOMETHING AS MISHPACHAT AM YISRAEL WE ARE TOGETHER AS ONE
We daven for the captives every day, you are such a strong woman and I agree with your husband John that we have to take each little thing that's positive and thank Hashem! He walked on his own 2 feet bH a miracle. He found something to tie up his arm so he wouldn't chas v'shalom bleed out! He's alive!!!! Chasdei Hashem!

May God bless and protect the hostages, The IDF and Israel 🇮🇱
I am praying for you and your son along with all the hostages. I know that my prayers are being heard by the God who sees and who loves us with an everlasting love. He is the Rock that is higher than I am. He is the water in a thirsty land. He is the God of all comfort and a very present help in time of need.
I don’t wonder who has the power. It is God. It is a given that I will not do everything right, but He promises to work all things together for good, for those who love him and are called according to His purposes. Trust in Him and keep walking through the doors He opens. Let Him be strong in you.
