Thanks for the heads up. I'll tackle ours very soon. I think I'll use the heat gun method then epoxy an 'over bent' bar in. (I'll put some 'Play-Do' in there and check clearances for bar size)
Nice Video, I can almost guarantee the crack you heard was your glue breaking from the original metal bar you glued in there. The bar is flexible yes, but it has to elongate to lower the bend amount. either way, it looks professional no matter how it happened. lol
I have a 2012 and mine is popped too. I had no idea this had a warranty but I think mine popped after 2017. I bought it 5 years old though so no clue if it has been replaced prior. My lights also pulse when I’m slowing which is an issue too. I talked to my Mazda dealer and they said “it has no known warranty issues so we won’t fix it, plus we only really have one Mazda mechanic and he can’t look at the car for 3 months.” Yep.. that’s an FU response.
I've messed with mine a few times since recently purchasing the car, and have glued on that little tab that you re-made out of steel at 7:35. It never holds more than a few days, and that's with Gorilla Glue. I think that remade tab was one of the best parts you did. In the brief time the glue was holding, despite the small gap along the top, having that part down took away enough of the "abruptness" of the hump that it barely caught my eye. I might try making that piece for mine. I'm also curious about that part you "broke" at the end there. Not sure if I'm ready to try that yet as with my luck I'll snap and break something unrelated, ha!
A heat gun may be a better option versus crushing the internal plastic frame. The frame itself is probably warped from the heat, but with the bracket installed a get gun could possibly get it to go back into a relatively normal shape. Gonna try it on mine and see.
My 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback had this same problem. I went to the Mazda dealership for regular maintenance and they told me it was a recall. They replaced it for free with an updated dash that they said shouldnt warp.
@@MakeItMike Well my ideas ended up being a failure, so I put it back together with some more glue and we’ll see what happens. For what it’s worth, I had no 8mm screws but all Phillips screws - maybe it changed for the ‘13. Also, at the rear where you sliced off the triangle supports, mine seems to have about triple the amount of those back there , so I have a suspicion my car’s was replaced with an “improved” design with more shoprots, but it still failed. With all those pieces disassembled, it looks like a pathetic lapse in engineering - to either side of the warp area there is ample support structure for the dash, but right there it’s just flapping in the breeze with nothing to hold it up. I looked around and the dash is $300-500 new, so I’m toying with the idea of getting one, and saving it for a rainy day to install it or pay someone experienced to do it. Both cases would be less than the dealer $1500 ish price tag. Oh well.
Damn, I wish you could do this for me. The Mazda dealership told me I'm out of my warranty date on the 2013 I own and said it would cost $1500 to repair. Total BS.
I wonder if you could fix it with weights. I might try to fix mine with an easy fix instead of all this. Also I seen a guy fix a warped dash with pipes attached to furniture moving pads wedged between the window and the dash for a couple of months to hold it down. You can do it yourself if you follow the directions exactly too. If you can find a good video that explains how it goes. I would say be careful laying everything out if you decide to do that and remembering where the screws go. I replaced my window motor regulator myself but it took me like twelve hours hahah and it would take a mechanic three but I saved a couple hundred atleast! :)
I'm in literally the same boat as you. Got the proverbial "f-you" from the dealer and Mazda USA on this. The more I see videos and look at mine, its such a horrible design doomed to fail.
@@monkeydude3987 I used Gorilla glue and dumbbells to glue my dash back down. It's working somewhat okay. It came undone last year but I put extra glue the second time around and was able to use weights to hold the dash in place. It's held up for the last 6 months so I'd recommend giving it a shot.
you seem like an out of the box thinker. Instead of trying to fix it and maybe break something else I was considering just filling the gap. 3d printed piece of plastic? Expanding foam and paint? If you were to go this route how would you fill the gap? Thanks after thinking about it i'm going to try Styrofoam and cover the front with black gorilla tape. Will this work??
My 2010 mazda 3 didn't warp, but became like tar. It was so sticky, anything unfortunate enough to come into contatct with it would be super hard to remove, and it would stretch this goopy black shit. Getting it on your hands was super hard to get off. Idk if its cause its constantly 105F+ in Texas, or if it was just shitty craftsmanship. My 2015 dash is much high quality, although after a few years without a sun shade the 2 dash speaker covers by the pillars have warped. Luckily I bought 2 new covers for 20$ from the dealership. I do miss my old 2.5L standard 2nd gen though.
They had a sticky dash recall and will replace your dashboard at no cost. Then 3 years later you will get that bump/separation that's in the video. Mazda really screwed the pooch on this one.
It didn't. Check out my other RUclips short about what I ended up doing. Basically I cut out the cancer section and put a dash cover over it and it looks fine.
The plastic part is holding up but the foam seems to swell when it gets hot right above the repair. It drives me nuts. I might just make a solid fiberglass cover that just forces everything down or something. It's hard to find a junk yard 3'with a good dash.
@@MakeItMike any advice for better results ?? Also which is better using heat gun as u mentioned at the end without the bar or using the zinc bar or maybe using steel bar ??

It's still holding but the foam part still raises up just a little. It bugs me still do I'm thinking I'll make another video here of a cover of wine type that holds it down.
This might just be the best video I’ve seen on the internet when it comes to Mazda3/Axela warp dashboard issue
Thank you for taking the time to post this !! It's a lot of work and I don't think I'll ever get around to fixing my dashboard....
Brilliant Mike... thanks so much for taking the much extra time to video this!! It drives me nuts as well.... may give this a try!

I have seen a few Mazda 3 with this same problem in Australia, it is a common issue
Hey Dale, got the same issue here with my Mazda 3. You got any tips/tricks to cover this up? Getting a new dashboard n installing seems too pricey.
They all do! Worst design I have ever seen on a Jap vehicle, and Mazda Australia are useless.

I wonder if they still have to honor the recall? I would totally take mine in if that's for the life of the vehicle.
@@MakeItMike nope, if the car has More than 7 years they wont honor it

Must be a weakness in the Mazda 3. I have a 2012 and it has the exact same problem.
How long did it actually take you to disassemble the parts in the way, and did you need to unhook your battery to remove those few parts?
Probably 10-15 min. I didn't disconnect the battery either.
