“THERAPY HANGOVERS?” ep.212

  • On Ask Kati Anything, your mental health podcast episode 212, licensed therapist Kati Morton discusses therapy hangovers and if those are even real. She then explains why talking positively to ourselves can give us the icks, why we can not like it if our therapist enjoys their job, and how we can ask our therapist to support us when we are having a hard time. She ends with the reasons we can not want to talk about our eating habits in therapy, and her experience working in community health clinics.
    audience questions:
    1. My question is about “therapy hangovers”. Is it even real? If it is real how does one deal with it and how long should it last? 00:43
    2. How does one get used to positive talk when their whole life they have been shit talked to. I get the ick with compliments and when someone shows that they care... 09:49
    3. Why do I hate it when my therapist says that he loves his job and that he really enjoys working with his patients? When he says that it makes me feel like I'm there for his entertainment. I feel like a circus freak, like I'm only there for him to study and learn from. 13:56
    4. I was having a hard time during my last therapy session. I didn’t want to talk much and felt really low. My therapist asked how she can support me. I had no idea what to say so I just told her that I didn’t know. What does she mean when she asks this? What kinds of support can she give during the therapy session? I do remote therapy by the way. 22:15
    5. My question is about not wanting to talk about my eating habits in therapy. In one of my first few sessions my therapist asked me about my relationship with food. I’m overweight and I don’t have very healthy eating habits. I would not consider it to be an eating disorder but who knows, a professional might disagree. I told her that I’ve seen dieticians before and I have all the knowledge I need about healthy eating and that I’m not interested in addressing this in therapy. She has diagnosed me with PTSD from S/A that happened when I was 23 (5 years ago) and that’s what I want to work on. The next session she brought up my eating habits again and advised me to see another dietician. I can’t help but feel frustrated. This is not what I’m here for and after being overweight for most of my life (since I was 12), I’m so sick and tired of every health professional bringing this up. Sore throat? It’s your weight. Ingrown toenail? You might want to lose some weight. Dry skin? It’s probably your weight. One time I saw my doctor for pain in my shoulders and left her office with a referral for gastric surgery. And here we are again. Maybe I’m overreacting or even lashing out because it's such a sensitive subject or is it justified that I don’t want to talk about this in therapy? I would love to get your opinion and hear from others who can relate. 32:46
    6. As a clinician who watches your videos, I’m wondering if you have ever worked in community mental health. What would you say CMH is doing well, versus what’s not so good? That can be in a systemic sense, a sense of what the clients or clinicians deal with, or just general. Curious for your input! 42:36

Feeling overexposed in therapy is a boundary issue that can and maybe should be discussed with the therapist. Trust and acceptance (unconditional positive regard) is so existential humanist. Feeling crummy for a minute to process difficult revelations.

For the person frustrated by the therapist who kept mentioning weight, you have a wonderful sense of humor. I have had a similar experience, not in therapy, but when I’m seeing a medical professional for something like the flu or a rash. It’s super annoying!! Btw, I have weight related dry skin and ingrown toenails too. I’m right there with you! ❤🙃

I hope you see this because I just want to say how I notice and love this new style in her AKA videos. I have a bg in marketing and branding and as a viewer/listener it's so much easier to listen to Kati now. You get straight to it. You pick more questions that aren't repetitive or that has been asked already. You don't swallow hard or drink water in the mic. I hope you see the differences in your analytics too! Anyway, thank you for your expertise and giving us the validation and support we need. I always listen to you when I am in a depressed episode because for some reason it gives me comfort. Even if what you are saying doesn't relate to me. With LOVE❤❤❤

I just had my first session and I woke the next day with a headache/migraine and felt just so exhausted (but, I also slept very poorly a few nights in a row). My ruminations were up and since I cried a lot in sessions I noticed I was crying a lot at home/by myself.

Therapy hangover is part of why i schedule my sessions early on my days off. If its a draining session, I have the day to recover. If it's an energizing session, it gets me going to get a lot done with my day off.

I finally feel so heard, I actually needed to pause the video to type this in and for being in tears. 😅
Thank you so much for your work and for being the voice of reason here too.

Dear Kati, I hope you're doing well and taking good care of yourself. I just finished my therapy session and, towards the end, I had this deeply sad feeling that, had I met my therapist in different circumstances, we could not be friends. Maybe I wouldn't even want to talk to her because of the judgements I have towards people. She comes from a different background than I do: she seems to have a close relationship with her family, while I come from a shattered, not broken, household. Knowing that we couldn't relate to each other, I would probably think she's too privileged to "get me". Moreover, as I write this, I notice that part of that inner judgement towards her comes from a place of shame for being who I am, for coming from where I come from, shame because I feel inferior. I feel she could easily be disgusted by me. I feel dirty. I feel like she would think I desperately need help, and that she would pity me. That is very different from the compassion and caring she shows in our sessions. How do I reconcile these emotions? Thank you very much for all you do.

Thankyou. I appreciate what you do and say so very much. I wanted to say, thankyou to answering the question which also addressed breathing. As I get so frustrated constantly saying that breathing techniques aren’t great for me. Sometimes they can work but overall, never if someone else has to remind me! I thought I was being entirely fussy and difficult, it’s good to hear how many other people also struggle.
    I also wanted to say:
    - you assumed the question asker potentially had BED. I understand this but my personal experience is…. I had severe anorexia, I now am borderline overweight/obese… but I actually don’t eat heaps more and my patterns are along the lines of restricting arfid. I definitely don’t have BED…. I only say this because I was also offered a gastric bypass as a potential option when I was about 15kgs lighter than now. I know eating is blamed for my weight which is blamed for many other aspects even though I had those same symptoms before being this weight…. I had an endocrinologist explain that essentially it was the various medications I’d been on overtime (not now) as well as some of the underlying health conditions. I struggle because I also have what I term “cortisol belly” from extreme and prolonged stress. Anyway…. My point is, the advice is all good and right! Zero issues, but the underlying assumption could easily be wrong. This is partly why seeing a dietician or similar can be helpful for some people anyway, but just thought I should point it out. Plus it’s more common for those with Bulimia nervous to be overweight than underweight and as you know super dangerous. Just more myths I guess!! I only want to note it because you’re so compassionate and understanding and if I hadn’t done a strict calorie count recently to see exactly what I was taking in, I may have heard this as overeating etc. anyway.
I also like what you have to say about community resources!! In my country they’re entirely overwhelmed and not generally experienced enough. But things like having someone help fill out forms and navigate the system, that would be amazing!!!
Thankyou for what you do. You’ve been keeping me company in the middle of the night lately, you just didn’t know it!

Thank you for answering my question about obesity and eating habits. I know it only had like 3 likes. You said to let you know if I have any follow-up questions and honestly I have many! But, the person I should probably talk to about this, would be my own therapist.. It’ll be extremely uncomfortable but I’ll try.
I agree with you that this topic of obesity in relation to eating disorders does not get talked about enough. I think it would be great if you’d post a video about it and if you’re unsure about it, I would love to help!❤

AskKatiAnything : Hey Kati , i love hearing your podcast during art work and it helps me do therapy better. But i am struggling with something i really want you to explain and give suggestions. i lie, i make up things, When i am in situations that i really dont trust, or makes me anxious. Which i really feel ahamed of it. But it's not for manipulating or scaping ,it's just saying fantasies as facts. I do this in therapy, grouptherapy , and with my family and my ex-partner called me a liar because of that. I am an honest person, i love honesty, and when i am feeling safe and trusted, i always say real facts and truth. Some people called it "compulsive lyng" but i dont see it as an addiction or compulsion, i feel it's the only way i can survive when i'm stressed and paranoid, but it caused me alot of troubles with my relationships and boundaries . I hope you understand my question and i hope you discuss it in your next podcast. You're lovely ❤

So still having significant sleep issues more than two weeks later is bad? (Rhetorical question).
My therapist used the word "abuse" to describe what i went through during my chikdhood, and while i had used the word before, it is different the first time someone else says it.

It sounds like people have the incorrect idea of what therapy is like. That they don’t understand it’s UNCOMFORTABLE at times and REALLY DIFFICULT… having your therapist there to help you do the hard thing… like walking around the room when dis regulated, is support to help you do the hard thing. Every thing in life is NOT supposed to be comfortable ALL the time.
How can you build muscles 💪🏼 to be able to help yourself if you never do it? Take the opportunity to do it with your therapist so you can believe and know that you CAN do the hard thing.
Therapy is NOT being comfortable 24/7 … it’s about addressing your issues and that is HARD WORK. Its work. Progress CANNOT be made without some hard work and doing things you don’t want to.
Good luck. I get that sometimes you feel like you can’t do anything… just try something… do ANYTHING that moves you forward. I recently had about 1.5 years of therapy to deal with trauma and issues I swept 🧹 under the rug for decades… I’m glad I had a therapist that gently pushed me and was by my side as she did. It was still hard as F’#%k though

I think I would be more concerned if I went to a medical professional that didn’t enjoy there job lol.
I understand a therapist is there to help us but Jesus, they are still a person and are still going to have their nuanced vocabulary, no one can monitor for EVERY word they use/say, if anything I have less trust in people who are so careful with their words bc it seems unnatural and forced and makes me think they don’t believe what they are saying so are either lying or being disingenuous. In my opinion, the general message and tone is more important than dissecting every single word used, because at the end of the day if you want therapy to be useful your going to have to hear things you might not want to hear. I see therapy as a place where you should receive unbiased feedback in an uplifting manner

    • @emancia
      @emancia Месяц назад +1

@@marypritchard8765 I would argue "better" is unfair to say. You two not being compatible in style doesn't make either of you better or worse. That being said, if you feel like that in therapy, bring it up, and yes, look for another therapist if necessary. However, what do you mean by the way people talk to babies or dogs? I am legitimately curious, because I don't see it that way. I see, on the one hand, Katie being the host of a public RUclips channel. It requires a different approach than being in the room 1-on-1 with her as she must keep the content engaging and, given the topics discussed, at the same time personable, relatable, with a human touch so that it separates her from pure entertainers. On the other hand, I see a very eloquent and highly educated adult who has spent her entire life studying and navigating emotions, both of her own and of the people in her life, be them clients, family, or otherwise. She also prepares ahead for these videos. It is no surprise that she can talk honestly about these things in a calm and self-regulated manner and with the appropriate lexicon. But again, that's my perspective, mixed in with some hypothesizing, and I'd still be curious to read others'.
At the end of the day, therapists are there to help you navigate your own emotions, and to help you self-regulate. They're the pros at that. It is an incredibly valuable piece of information to share with your therapist if there's anything that bothers you about their style and approach. Similarly, it would be incredibly valuable for us to explore why we feel differently. We all watched the same video, but how we perceived it is informed by past experiences. I often question whether I'm bothered by people, or by my own judgements of people, my own assumptions of them. But I overanalyze things, as you can tell 😬
