Hey, kids, I’m back! Did you miss me? Don’t answer that. Here I am, back in the glorious Guitar World studios in Bakersfield, California.
Why am I back? Uh…to teach you how to rock, that’s why! I’m also here to talk about the brand-new Steel Panther album, All You Can Eat, which you are no doubt listening to right now! I came back just so that I could teach you how to play some of the incredible riffs on our new record, and I’d like to start with the song “If I Was the King.”
This song is pretty basic rock and roll in that just about everything in it is based on either the minor pentatonic scale or the blues scale-the biggest scales in rock, right? These scales come in handy.
Don’t just practice the Phrygian and Mixolydian modes-you should be basing everything on the blues and minor pentatonic scales. You might not listen to B.B. King very much, but everything he played is the foundation for all that Testament and Megadeth stuff you listen to, and it’s the foundation of Steel Panther’s music too.
"BB King was a big influence on me... his tone and his... girth". Hahaha Satchel rules!
For non-native English speakers: "girth" means, among other things, "waist" or "measurement round a tree" ;-)
This is my favorite underrated Steel Panther song. It also has a badass solo
I find it funny how he talks so much real stuff in between the character. Like leaving breaks and pauses in playing. The philosophical things on top of teaching the notes of it. The focus on style rather than the pentatonic. And he's so encouraging in the middle of joking in character. This is probably the most in-depth musical guitar lesson I've seen, his focus is so much on knowing what you play and why.
I love to imagine a teacher saying
"O.k children, we have a new music teacher in school 2day....."
Then Satchel walks in.
His tone is unbelievable... what a beautiful sound!
+Nathan Toburen and his girth!
You gotta love Russel Parish, btw:he's actually right about B.B.King,the man influenced more musicians that you can imagine.
smiled when i saw this in my subscriptions... love this guy
Those huge bends he does. I just feel like i'm gonna break a string when i try it. Like the one in the solo of death to all but metal. Beastly bend.
Danny just put on a set of 9s and you’ll be fine
If it was in standard e I’d agree but tuning half a step down gives you that extra bend space by half 😂
PLEASE MORE OF this SHOW!!!!!! BECAUSE STEEEL IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
This dude is so awesome.
O.o that nipple dance on the 12th fret at 5:00! I, like Satchel thinking about BB Kings girth, have forgotten what I'm saying.
Amongst all the humour is actually some excellent advice. He's an excellent guitarist!
Satchel and Steel Panther are fkn awesome.
this guy is hilarious and surprisingly good at the same time. great lesson.
This guy is good and it is nice to see someone play without using the whammy bar for all of the vibrato. BB King should be a huge influence for any guitar player because music is supposed to move you. Don't misunderstand me speed is good, I love thrash as much as the next guy but a good integration of blues will certainly widen your diversity.
I wish I could give all my money directly to satchel for being so badass \m/
LOL...he was playing guitar before he was born...check Wikipedia if you don't believe him...I could watch Satchel's instructional videos for hours. He's so great at making it all seem like he's just a dumbass heavy metal guitar player, but you can tell he really knows his shit (or stuff...lol). Can't wait to meet all those guys when they tour with Judas Priest in October. Steel Panther may seem like a joke, but all those guys are massively talented.
Beginning was awkward lol. This dude is awesome.
amazing band this si so refreshing to liste to good music First good band to come out in 20 YEARS!
Have to admit I know Russ is a fantastic guitar player -but he has found a niche doing this Steel Panther gig - those guys have worked pretty hard and long to make this happen.
Panthertonic :))
His tone and his girth
Anyone who says he is a joke or is shit at guitar, go to 10:43, i know he is just messing about but it shows he could be in megadeth and shit like that
BEST ALBUM EVER!!!! have not stopped listening to it for 2 weeks lol and OMG BB KING?? If you don't know the "B.B. KING BOX" or what I'm talking about, you've never learned guitar lol
5:03 "IF IIIII WAAAS THE KIIIING!!"
Satch I am so bummed man. Why did you start dying your wigs man? Age with class dude. Seriously though I love the column and your F'n Band man.
PS, you need to go back to Marshall. You absolutely Rawked with your TSL100.
Why are you talking about Russell? This is Satchel...
Sometimes I wish guitar world would do this for bass as well :(
+FluteRocker99 This ain't bass world ;)
Is that the feedback from the amp I hear lol. Awesome stuff though!
BlackRoseNite when Amos are turned up full volume there’s going to be feedback. Unless you’re running a million pedals.
Satchel is the best.
i am exited to see you! yeah sure, I see...
satchel thanks for the lesson dude and thanks to bb king
cool licks brother
I honestly cannot tell for the life of me what strings he's playing in the intro
Thank you Satchel)
Fuck yeah satchel \m/
" Tha-a-ats i-i-it!!" ha-ha-ha Satchel is a genius of simplicity. Actually, I don't like BB King, but I like to play Kenny G stuff on guitar, cool things. Ofcourse, after I little tired to play metal stuffs)
sweet tone
Is here a tab for this somewhere?
I wish Satchel could replace Paul...
RIP B.B
Nice!!
fuck yeah!
Satch can ya play that last part again I was pooping thanx bro
You're looking good for a 75-year-old!! :-)
Lucky kids!
"guys just keep on playing, the whole time" i think that was yngwie malmsteen...
wow
holy stuuuuuuff
Did anyone else think his fast playing thing was good too?
I was going to meet BB King once but one of the guys setting it up heard me tell a joke. I said, "after he meets me, he's just going to be BB..." They thought I was going to try to show him up so they called it off. Hilarious. I had no intentions of doing that. It was just a joke man.
what's the joke though?
Lmao!
you JUST SAID SHIT IN #49
That doesn't even look like a banjo neck banjo neck is not very wide and very round
I mean 47 s 😡
How the fuck does he play a neck that thin? Looks like a banjo.
Freddy Saunders There is no such thing as a 'standard neck' you nitwit.
Lots and Lots of practice. Same thing on a banjo.
It's just personal taste... i hate fat necks like a gibson, i can't understand how people can play that shit. In the othe way, there are the super wizard Ibanez (17mm) that are delicious to play...
Warren DeMartini and Randy Rhoads played wide necks... besides, neck width has nothing to do with sound.
sparkymgtow I think they are talking about front to back not side to side. I know Rhoads liked a neck that was more like a '59 LP, but I'm not sure about DeMartini. I like a wide finger board, but a little thinner neck. I love my Music Man JP6.
becuse you just said SHIT!!! 😲
