The only problem is it never tries to be its own show. It shamelessly lifts almost all of its ideas wholesale from Star Trek, or parodies them.

The beginning was a bit slow, and not really a punch, but every single episode had something in it. Although when I actually here the phrase "we are at Moclus", I roll my eyes slightly, there were really enough Bortus centered episodes. But altogether, the second season is getting better and better, and I really can´t wait for Friday now. I will really miss Alara, she was the best character for me.

    • @theelectricindian

To be fair one of the Moclan eps, the porn one was meant for S1. It was already filmed and was supposed to air last season but they held it over for some reason. Then with Alara leaving they were forced to air it in that order. That's why S2 seems moclan heavy since there is an extra ep that wasn't supposed to be there.

The only thing that was really off with Alara's episode was the rolling hills of her planet. Any super-Earth capable of crushing a metal bottle flat under its own weight wouldn't have hills or mountains or anything of the sort. Trees wouldn't be able to sprout either. Bipeds fairly improbable. Beautiful scenery yes, but physically impossible. Other than the science snafu, it's my favourite episode so far.

We watch via Hulu and are caught up to Identity, which we're waiting to enjoy when both parts are available. I think this is the season The Orville has come into its own, the frat boy humor is receding (I believe "Ja'loja" was an S1 script not produced until S2) and it's operating more like straight-ahead SciFi. On the other hand, MacFarlane seems to be riding a bit of a hobbyhorse first detailed in "All the World is Birthday Cake", viz. that one is either progressive or prejudiced. One episode is particularly ham-handed in delivering that message but I won't tip it any more than that as you haven't gotten to it...

I wish the first couple of episodes with Bortus were edited together. Apparently one of them was a hold over from season one. It could have been a two parter - following Bortus and his issues moving towards the ending where stuff is resolved by him doing his pee ritual, maybe with their kid there too. The subplots of relationships and the action stuff could have been inter-spliced throughout the episode. They felt like they could have been edited together to form a more cohesive introduction to the season. They felt off being separate.

Yes, the captain is kinda beta at times, but the teacher boyfriend was even more. Prime example of "non-toxic" guy, who is left alone in the end. Yes, the series does promote some aspects of PC culture or rather degenerated behavior like the old Star Trek did. There are some glimpses of good values such as for example showing that single mum doctor can't give to her boys, what father figure can albeit in a form of robot. The thing that could swing the pendulum towards having more positive messages, would be if the captain and his wife get back together at the end of this show.

I'm a big trek fan and I watch The Orville to scratch my trek itch as it has a very TNG feel. TNG wasn't all great, but it had some really great episodes. The Orville has flashes of greatness within certain episodes but there's still a level of inconsistency and I don't feel like it's quite hitting the mark just yet. Still, it took TNG 2 seasons to actually get going (50 episodes in all if I remember right) so I'm certainly not giving up on The Orville, but I do wonder if it will ever truly stretch it's wings.

BUT earth and moclus orbital periods won’t match that planet’s. The years will be shorter or longer. The next time their birthdays come about this planet will be in a completely different star sign. Dave, why haven't you done a review of the newest Battlestar Galactica?

I agree with the Bortus/Moclan point, that it might just be a bunch of lip-service. For me, it helps to think of the Moclan not as gay-Klingons, but instead, something closer to gay-Jaffa.
But even then, I think a better approach to the Moclans would have been for the writers to make more of their relationship aspects a mystery on the ship. Then, when the crew starts to pry, they find out that the Moclan keep these things a secret only from humans because of their historical background of persecution on the topic. Other species in the show (eventually) allude to human history, and the humans in the show have to explain how they've risen above it, so it would have worked for the Moclan world-building as well, as it relates to other specific cultures they encountered.
Instead, as it turns out, the Moclans are worse than historical humans with regard to persecution, if you can believe it.
Anyway, it is what it is. That opportunity has been lost and here's hoping that Moclan episodes get better.

Ja'loja was a bit off for a season opener because it was meant to be the season one finale

Thats how exacly same as in every big work place - it is very realistic. Even between some The Orville's actors something happened, but in the different configuration ;)

I have massive problems with both of them. Everything from the plot to the minor details make no sense. So disappointing after the wonderful Alara episode.

Holding out for "Bigger and Better Things", huh? Just keep watching until you see "Identity" Parts 1 and 2. You will not be sorry.

The first 3 episodes, sucked because one ep (ep 2) was supposed to be aired in season 1. Then the other 2 eps had to be aired in that ordered due to the actress that played Alara leaving. It also explains why the first part of the season seemed weaker since it was already filmed and they had to use those eps. It's also the reason why S2 seems to be so much more Moclan obsessed since the extra episode that was held over from S1.

203 is probably my favorite of the series so far. And despite the somewhat lazy callback to the gender reassignment i thought 202 was quite good. That whole thing was frustrating. Nothing was resolved. "Hey, here's a topical thing." Then nothing.

It's no ST:D, but it's almost as if that show was meant to push the Overton Window off a cliff, so this one would appear tolerable.

Did Orville S2 have a different writer/director? I've not liked the first few episodes.
