  • The Orville 26% Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score exposes the 'Access Media' for what they are. So much love for Doctor Who and Star Trek Discovery, but none for The Orville? In doing research for my Doctor Who videos I came across this and was reminded why this is the perfect example why critics are no longer needed. Almost a perfect inversion of the Doctor Who Critic/Audience score. They can't all have that bad of taste..can they? Let's go back and read some of their reviews and then some new ones from the fans.

    To quote Rich Evans,the man the myth the legend:'' STD feels like a show,made by people who don't know anything about Star Trek and is the exact opposite of everything Star Trek stands for.The show is called ''discovery'' and the only thing they're doing is blowing shit up! Stop blowing shit up and do some actual exploration,ffs. The fact,that Seth McFarlane's Orville,feels more Star Trek,then the official Star Trek speaks for itself.''

      Rich said it even better in an earlier episode, "Star Trek is supposed to be a future that you actually want to live in". STD was just a depressing hellish future no one is hoping for.

      When Mike asked Rich "what was the point of the season?" To which Rich replied "I don't know? Let's blow stuff up and let's have battles. Then in the last 10 minutes let's tack on a "war am bad" message." Both Mike and Rich seem to genuinely love Trek for what Roddenberry wanted it to be. A story of exploration, discovery (somewhat a tainted word now) and making a better world that the viewers would actually want to be a part of (as Jason Gamer said).

    I'm still floored that first female critic was all like 'is there no female characters I can identify with... blah blah blah". That's one of the great things I like about the Orville, well-developed characters with interconnectivity with the other characters. For instance, I see Alara and Kelly's relationship best resembling a younger sister/ older sister relationship. This pairs well with the Alara's insecurities about being pretty young for her position, in comes Kelly who acts as both a mentor and a friend.

      @Zero .Karma they're not evil, at least I sure most aren't. Evil requires one to understand what they do is wrong and continue to doing it because in their head it benefits themsomehow ie Palpatine in Star Wars. SJWs are something altogether more dangerous; they are Zealots. They believe what they do is for the greater good, anyone who criticizes is Evil (othering), and because of that the ends justify the means. They seem have given up their sense of empathy as they are so emotionally attached to their idea, I don't think their brains have any neurons left dedicate towards that emotion.

    It‘s amazing that the “Orville“ can address cultural issues like gender reassignment, homosexuality, technophilia, Awkward wall flowers, strong women, everyday schmo, religious fanaticism, family strife, etc. into a program that shows both sides without overt judgment. Simply defining the human condition with wit. The drama may not be all flash bang, but neither was the original series of “Star Trek“, which addressed cultural issues of the time. The OST covered technophobia, political suicide, race inequality, gender inequality, and so forth. In a machismo way but look at the other programs of the time.

    • @Spicy_Meatball
      @Spicy_Meatball 5 лет назад +8

      I think a lot of people see Star Trek as too cerebral or for nerds and The Orville is a great way to get new people into trek. They come into it thinking it is just a spoof and end up seeing episodes reminisent of Next Gen. Is it a lot like Galaxy Quest? yes, but it gets people into the genre and they might be more likely to check out the other Treks they might not have because they automatically dismissed them as for nerds. We all started watching Trek somewhere, many loved the shows of next gen era onwards but initially didn't like the original series because trekkie meant you were a nerd or the sets were cheesy but after you fell in love with trek you gain an appreciation for all trek and saw the origial series for its great stories and actors. I think that is what CBS and STD failed they tried to make a new trek to bring new people in they made a show that was more Star Wars than Star Trek, all action and no substance. Not saying that the original Star Wars didn't have substance, but the recent batch of movies, The Last Jedi, have been all flash. Star Trek has always had stories that made you think and Star Wars was always the more action/adventure of the two franchises.

    • @joelaton1062
      @joelaton1062 5 лет назад

      @@Spicy_Meatball The fact is, most of us that love Trek are between our 40's and 60's or 70's. Trek had become stagnant and boring. I thought Voyager was god awful, and DS9 started so slow. It got rolling by the end though. I work at a elementary school, and a 4th grade teacher asked me how do they as teachers compete with technology such as video games and tablets etc to keep kids attention. My point is that the younger generation's entertainment is fast paced. A tng style show will not appeal to them. And the original audience is all getting older. What were they supposed to do? I thought discovery was ok, it had some good action and scenes. It is not ground breaking by any means. I don't get all obsessed with all this SJW stuff like some of you it seems, so that does not bother me. I just think they had to try to bring in new fans.

    see and I don't get why the critics wouldn't love the orville. It's a pretty progressive show. Of course they are a bit more diplomatic. Whenever they meet a different civilization they don;t immediately seek to shame and berate them for not being progressive. So what gives? Diverse cast between race and gender. Commander Botris is from a completely homosexual society. They have a xenophobic alien on board who can still work with everyone. The ship is full of non-humans who work together and occasionally 'get down tonight'. The captain and senior officer are a divorced couple that still manage to keep a productive professional relationship. I don't get it. It's a show where people aren't divided and are seeking their fulfillment together. Maybe that's why the critics hate it. Not enough people hating one another to suit their agenda.

    • @erikhill6037
      @erikhill6037 5 лет назад +7

      1. Its not serial. Newer scifi and even most shows now have an overall plot and are sequential. You should shuffle most of the orville episodes and show them and the show would still make sense. At the end of the episode the issue is overcame, life onboard turns to normal until the next episode. I can see where someone who professionally watches TV would get annoyed with that. Its old style. It also works great for casual watchers.
      2. Its not dark. Dark, moody and gritty is popular right now. The Orville is bright and optimistic. It takes from the ideas of theming of the 80's and 90's. Its used and recycled to the critics.
      3. frat humor is a blackball. A lot of these critics are likely middle aged adults work. Work and frat humor generally doesn't mix.

      I had to check because i couldn't believe it. Turns out all reviews for season 2 (nine at the moment) are positive, which seriously bumps the series' global rating, since RottenTomatoes apparently just averages the individual ratings of each season (which is incredibly simplistic and misguiding, but whatever).
      Out of the nine critics, if i'm not mistaken, five had rated the first season, and out of those five, three "changed their minds" from negative to positive (Liz Shannon Miller
      , Nick Wanserski
      and Kevin Yeoman
      ). I'm certainly not here to defend critics, but i'm not sure we can conclude anything from that.
      More interestingly though, critics' reviews for season 1 mostly came in waaaay before the first episode aired (IMDb date: 25 mar 2018), the bulk of them as far back as sixth months earlier (early sep 2017). I don't know what they saw, i have no idea how things work for TV show reviews. On the other hand, all reviews for season 2 came in after the first episode actually aired.
      And for what it's worth, if we look at the five reviews for season 1 that came in after the show started (ended, actually, as there are zero reviews during the first season's actual airing period), three of them are positive, which means a rating of 60% from critics that saw the same thing as us, versus a rating of 23% from critics that saw whatever they saw before the show officially aired.
      So, again i don't know how these things work, but perhaps season 1 critics saw an unfinished product plus had a negative bias against the concept ("dastardly MacFarlane rips off Trek and Galaxy Quest"), hence the show being trashed before it started.

It is "diverse," engages "current year politics" in a thoughtful (and inclusive) way, and addresses topics that most shows refuse to touch. And it does it while making it all extremely accessible and relatable. The Orville is ACTUALLY doing what STD, New Who, and all this other shallow garbage claims to be doing.
    I find it really odd that the critics are ignoring this and trying to claim that a lack of this is a shortcoming of the show.

      It's still pretty hopeless sci-fi. though. The odds of even a single alien species being even remotely like humans is basically zero. Without almost perfectly replicating the evolutionary history of humans, this is just not possible. And in Orville you have dozens of these not-human species, including the feminst-statement "aliens" used as security officers on the ship. I liked the visuals and some of the stories, but the endless political lecturing is just not for me. Violence against women = evil and you're Hitler. Violence against men = funny, especially if a woman is the assailant. Got it! Now can we please stop the crude, society-destroying brainwashing and focus on sci-fi for a while? No? OK then!

    Orville actually made me watch Star Trek TNG.
    I'm a big sci-fi fan but Star Trek always made me feel a little bit intimidated to dive into. Truly massive lore, a ton off series to catch on and very particular fanbase - I thought I would never have time or patience to explore Star Trek universe because I didn't watch the show growing up. But the second I saw pilot of Orville I knew what Star Trek actually like without watching even the opening credits of it. I just knew it. I finished 1st season of Orville and right away started watching Star Trek TNG and naturaly fell in love with cpt. Picard and the crew of USS Enterprise.
    Orville is like a "gateway drug" to Star Trek for me :)
    Orville is what current sci-fi shows and movies missing: a space adventure with central ethical conflict when answers are never obvious rather than yet another explosion filled defining space war with stupid predetory race/doom's day evil allpowerfull villain, no matter how complex and unnecessary convoluted, the solution to all problems always seems be to blow the shit up.
    Cudos to Seth McFarlane for doing this show even with this heinous media bashing.

      You know the other thing modern sci-fi has lost? The wonder. Think about it. When was the last time a new sci-fi took you somewhere that felt rich, alive, and even tiny bit special? For me, that's Avatar (the blue aliens, not the Airbender). Here was a living world, with a living culture, and a wonderful new place that felt explorable. Can't think of one that's done that for me since.
      That's what the Orville has brought back. A sense of wonder. "To boldly go where no man has gone before." Not sure about you, but the episode with the area of 2D space reminded me of that fantastical feeling "Star Trek The Motion Picture" gave me when they were flying through Vger's cloud. Okay, dangerous mission, serious situation, but here is something special in the middle of all of that.
      Also, the Orville is simple and straight forward, which is what original Star Trek was. They spent their energy on the people, not the world or the conflict, nor do they try to make things dark, gritty, or anything like that, which seems to be the favorite of modern TV sci-fi. There's soul there, just like old school Trek. It has a touch more comedy than Trek did, but even when the jokes don't work, you're able to roll over them and continue on.
      And finally, as so many have said, Orville doesn't shove anything down your throat. It just is. Issac is the only racist/sexist person on the ship, and even he is respectful of his crew mates in his own odd way, as seen by his attempt to get back at Gordon for his practical joke. Everyone else, they give the air of it not mattering. They don't think about gender or racial equality, because it just is.
      I hope Orville continues to do super well in ratings, because maybe, just maybe, we'll show producers what we actually want, and get more of the same in the future.

      I liked Orville and Discovery. Discovery's intersectional feminist spirit was gut-wrenchingly forced, nothing good felt incidental and natural but politically charged, passive aggressive and defensive as borne out in the critical reviews. Thank goodness Lorca took command, one of my favourite captains and the saving grace of Season 1. 100% badass. Sadly, such badassery is often at odds with the sometimes annoying Burnham but she is OK. The gore factor was a welcome switch-up for me and I didn't mind the new appearance of the Klingons. Deep space should be grittier, it's a majorly fucked-up wild west out there, and make-up has advanced. So be it.
      Orville is fun. It captures the spirit of The Next Generation with a bit more flamboyance, keeping itself afloat with those thought-provokingly strange sci-fi situations and Seth's comedy stylings. Still, it feels a bit tame and not very original, which is acceptable from a parody.
      Ultimately, I stopped watching Orville but I'm still watching Discovery. This is part due to accessibility, as it is easier for me to watch Discovery on Netflix, and in part due to the fact Discovery feels fresher. That said Season 2 of Discovery has yet to hit warp.

      @wetdroidedition2549 5 лет назад

      Inescapable Entropy Oh, no. I don't said that. Read my other comment: Critics now have a political agenda, they are no longer reliable. In addition, they are praising the works more culturally mainstream in a politically correct culture that seeks to impose itself by force of repetition, seeking the silence of dissenting voices, boycotting alternative proposals, etc. So there is also a cool factor in being contrary to the critics. Currently having a different appreciation to that of the pedestal critics is counterculture 🤘🏻

      Inescapable Entropy Of course. And I think it is possible to make an objective critique of a work. That in fact there are those who have the intellectual resources to do it, or who are experts in a certain thing or element or things or elements of a work and can give a useful opinion in fact. And I also think that subjective opinion or appreciation is valid, but accepting that it is subjective. However, in the context of this video I think that the "critics" referred to as such don't carry out any of this type of critique nor are they necessarily experts. I dare to make this generalization because of the frequency of the difference so crazy between what the critic sees and what the public or other critics not aligned with the mainstream media see in their analysis.That's why they do not seem reliable to me. But I also think it's possible that there are cases where the public is going to go against with the pedestal critics appraisal because today that is cool. As I pointed out before, it is countercultural. So sometimes by the cool factor or the troll factor (make the pedestal critics or the company, director or arrogant producers with a certain political agenda, to get angry) the public will be contrary to the critics. And this is going to happen even if the critics have not necessarily made a compromised valuation because they are paid or because the work or movie itself fits into their political agenda. There is a toxic cultural environment that has generated this kind of thing.

      @@wetdroidedition2549 I give a lot of fair and balanced critiques of things. I can't begin to tell you how many people try bash my criticisms with their opinions because of their feelings rather than argue objectively. When I give critiques I always make it clear when I am speaking my opinion and when I am using objectivity. The average person today has a very hard time understanding the difference. It leads to a lot of debates. I usually win them and when I don't I concede the loss and move on. My biggest criticism of art and media these days is that their overall level of quality has diminished. When coupled with a dumbed down easily triggered millennial groupthink culture the entertainment value actually shifts to the debates over the critiques instead of the work being critiqued. Ironic.

      I'm comparing to ToS and TNG, even Bragas Enterprise and finding Orville totally wrong in tone and balance. Spending 45 minutes on gay s&m with these bizarre giant black wrestlers all crisco'd up, then 5 minutes on the rescue, that's totally wrong balance.
      That's typical of Orville, where boring kids issues, tedious race issues, boring dating, continually take lions share of plots while actual sci fi gets short shrift. A rose by another name would smell as sweet...and that's The Orville. It looks and sounds like Star Trek. More importantly, it feels like Star Trek. What it doesn't feel like, however, is that Macfarlane tried to turn a Star Trek series into a Marvel movie with excessive social commentary. For that we have Discovery. Not that Trek has avoided social issues, but it did it with broader strokes and more universal messages.
    Is some of the Orville derivative? Of course. Every Star Trek series has been derivative to some extent (particularly on TOS and TNG). It doen't diminish the quality of DS9 for example. The Orville at least feels like the derivation is an homage (I'm pretty sure Seth expected the comparison). The same cannot be said of Discovery.
    At the end of the day, I finish watching an episode of The Orville with opinions that range from "that wasn't that good" to "wow, that was really well done." With Discovery, I'm just left wondering "what and why?"

    What sci-fi lost was hope. Everything became endless war and dystopia. The Orville has that feeling of hope that the first trek had, combined with the character driven scripts that next gen had, but also the story arcs and serial (as opposed to episodic) grounds that new shows have. I like the Orville but I don't think it qualifies as spoof, because it doesn't really spoofs anything, for example a spoof is Mel Brook's Spaceball or Your Frankenstein, or most Leslie Nielsen movies, this is more of a straight sci-fi show, however I don't think is a rip-off either, that's ludacris, a rip-off is when you plagiarize something but your try to be subtle enough for no one to notice, like The Hunger Games are a rip-off of Battle Royale or The Starchaser is a rip-off of Star Wars (and notice, a rip-off not necessary something wrong, Harry Potter is a rip-off of The Worst With and is still a great work of fiction IMO at least) but the point is, a rip-off is when you don't want people to know you rip something which is not the case, McFarlane can't be more open about how he wanted to make a ST series. I mean is almost fan fiction.

    The one way for professional TV Critics to loose relavence is to become completly at odds with a audience opinions
    The entire point of reading a porfesional critics reviews has been to decide if a show or movie is worth watching. But if they are becoming unreliable... or even worse, reliablly at odds with audience opinion they will become irrelevant.
    I would have read a professional review over general audience reviews in the past, because i'd expect them to be objective, and be able to give sensible creative reasons why a production is working or not. However if a professional is going to give something a high rating because of something as silly as race, it becomes an invalid way to judge a show.
    I think the ever decreasing doctor who fan score for season 11 is interesting, but also show that fans will judge a whole series, while critics are usually just talking about episode 1.

      C. Phillips I agree with you on that movie! I had so much High Hopes for it and didn’t like it at all. I have watched family guy but like you said… If it’s on and nothing else is on. But the Orville was just such a big surprise to me and I really really like it !!!

      @@jprph1 I saw AMWTDITW at the cinema, and there was absolute silence from the audience the entire way through. I have no idea what people saw in it, which is a shame because Macfarlane can be really funny when he wants. I'm looking forward to season two of Orville.

    Final thing. DARK is great in small amounts, but like swearing it looses it's impact when over used. The episode about whether or not to transition the female child to male, the episode where the saved the enemy children but killed the crew, the two federation scientists lobotomized....situations like this are happening in a dramatic/action tone with some humor sprinkled appropriately in but have dark endings that make you think. The occasional dark ending and content are punctuated and far more impacting when they are used sparingly for impact and in service of the story and drawing out the subtle commentary. Dr. Who hits you over the head with nothing but commentary and Discovery is dark just to be dark and other than that, I don't know what the fuck they're trying to do, and it seems neither do they.

    With Ghostbusters 3 erasing that crapy reboot, and now The Orville, my faith in TV and Films, got restored.

    • @rbartow22
      @rbartow22 5 лет назад

      Ghostbuster's wasn't really meant for you than... It made sense to reboot because of Harold Ramis death. And when you look at TV and Movie hero's young women and girls have about 90% less to choose from than guys, that's just a fact.
      If they put Ghostbusters back into theater and you went and just surveyed the people there you'd notice a ton more girls would be there than your typical movie (oh wait, they already did that).
      Also if you ask girls who saw it (again this has been done) ages 10-24 you'd see they overwhelmingly liked it. And I've also never seen as many girls dress up as ghostbusters on Halloween as I did that year.
      Sorry you didn't like it but not every movie needs to be about "you" or "me".
      Side note: Orville is awesome though. And I am super excited to know what they are going to do for GB3.

    Lol...this has been happening since rottenTomatoes started, except mostly to only movies that are pro-Christian or even shows that show the conservative POV in good light. I thought that Orville would be far enough left, but I guess the line has moved.

    I don't watch Dr. Who or Star Trek Discovery (my apologies? 🤷‍♀️) but! I LOVE The Orville!! The humor is spot on and they also cover SEVERAL "hot button" issues in, I believe, every episode, and do so, not with any "Frat Boy" logic, but fairly. Why aren't the critics addressing those?

    Orville is basically Trek with jokes and really is the closest thing we have to a true Trek show today. yes a lot of the jokes fall flat and yes it started out with too much of the usual MacFarlane bad jokes but that was really toned down after a couple episodes and turned into something great. i just hope Seth can keep it up

      @@darren871 Ya I get it, however when you look at the bigger picture it gave a bit more depth to not just the ship, but the crew as well. It was a bit lackluster for a premier, but at the same time put some lingering stories to bed. The second episode was really good, and damn did it tackle something that is important in today's society. I just hope it doesn't turn people off from the series though.

    • @ferrumignis

      @@DaffyRoth 100% agree, the premier didn't do the best job of portraying the show; it made it look purely like a slightly weak spoof of Star Trek when it's so much more.

    My retiered parents (75 and 69 years of age) watched Star Trek once in a blue moon. My father watched Next Gen whenever he caught it on TV, but didn't "plan" it. Well, they watched The Orville. After the first episode my mother asked me "Have you watched The Orville yet? It's really good!". Same with my father. They kept raving about it and asking me if I watched any episodes...after each episode. I told them no, because I want to watch it 'fully' (as in binge it with no commercials). I do that with all my tv shows.
    These "Critics" who call the Orville 'bad' are just ignorant, self-entitled, paid-for-shills. That's all there is to it.
