Recipe: No. 1 Fritter Batter 1 1/3 cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 2/3 cup milk 1 egg Mix and sift the dry ingredients, add milk gradually and the eggs, well beaten. Use batter for the following fritter recipes. Apple Fritters: 2 medium sized sour apples Powdered Sugar Lemon Slices Batter No. 1 Core, pare and cut apples in 1/3 inch slices. Dip pieces in batter No 1. Fry in deep, hot fat. Serve with powdered sugar and lemon slices.
I'd love to see you try the other batter and compare the two recipes to see which one you like better, what the difference is, which is easier to work with, etc.
My mother received that when she got married in1918!! She gave it too me full of her comments, changes, and updates as the years changed cooking, she lived by this book, and entertained a lot( my father was a a Doctor. Now I'm 85, so I gave it to my baby sister's daughter..❤❤❤❤
Hello Stephanie, I have made fritters like that for years over 50, using a 150 year old hand me down family recipe. The only difference is that in 1950 my grandmother was in a hurry and diced the apples instead of slicing apples. She had 14 children, so time was important. In about 1965, while helping her, I accidently spilled cinnamon onto the diced apples. After that, we started tossing apple chunks in about 1 teaspoon cinnamon before adding to batter. After frying, some were glazed, some dusted with powdered sugar, some with white sugar, some with brown sugar. (Hard to please 14 children as far as sweetness, texture, etc.) my favorite where dusted with light brown sugar. Many variations have been tried over the years. I prefer light frying over a darker fried. They freeze well and are great with coffee tea, hot chocolate.
I made a video showing how to make butter “exactly like Pawpaw did”. I mentioned it could be done several ways, but I was making it the same way. I got an insane amount of comments telling me I could do it differently. I was like y’all all failed on listening. 😂 I love that you’re using old recipes to see how they did it! So fun!!!
Good job Stephanie! I would have added in cinnamon also. The old recipes don’t use sugar as much because it was still kind of a rare, expensive commodity. It’s wonderful you are trying and sharing these wonderful old recipes ❤️🙏
I love apple fritter’s and I think I will try this. I like the idea of no added sugar in the mix. The canned vegetables along your cabinet looks beautiful. Thank you for sharing Stephanie and thank you to Buddy for being the taste tester. 🌼🌸
I love old cook books❤️ My mom gave me all hers before she passed, they were well loved and the old recipes are great!!! My kids always ask me how to make certain things and I send the pics of the recipe from the old cookbook ❤️
I love to watch them being so loving and respectful of each other. When Buddy came in she said "hey baby" so lovingly. I warmed my heart. You just don't hear that much any more.
You had me at apple fritter. My go to is also an apple fritter. I may have to give those a try with the cinnamon. I have to agree with Buddy on the over sweetness part. I have had them where you need something savory after you eat it to beat back the sweetness so I try to have a piece of bacon or sausage handy to fix that...lol. But those look very good....now I want a fritter.....
My Dad had a much loved favorite his sister would send to him. It was basically an apple pie filling put in a pie crust and fried. They were called fried pies. He loved them! I guess you could use any kind of fruit filling, but Apple was his favorite. ❤
When my grandmother passed away in 1990 I got some of her old cookbooks to from my cousin . I was born in the south , she was born in Georgia, and they lived in Florida when my grandparents got married, and I was born in Florida , now live in California. But I love those old cookbooks because they have all the etiquette like you were talking about and how to act for a young lady in that time. So funny I know exactly what you’re talking about Stephanie . those fritters, look really good.!! I’m now 64 years old. My grandma passed away when I was 32.
Thank you Stephanie for sharing this recipe. I've always wanted to actually try to make it myself but I'm not sure exactly why I haven't because I have Cook book's and I really appreciate you doing theses older recipes. I grew up in a family of cook's from my grandma's house and my momma and now I live by myself so sometimes I just don't feel like cooking for just me. But when I do I'm so used to cooking for a lot of people and I'm always calling family members and asking them if they would be interested in what's on the menu for today. My family members love my cooking and that makes me happy and feel good to know and see them enjoying my food's that I have prepared that day. God Bless y'all and have a great weekend Deman Homestead 🙏💐...
Steph I just love watching your videos. You are so calming! My mother loves Apple fritters. She was in the hospital last week and is now home. I may just try to make these for her! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
I worked for Winchell donuts years ago . Fritter were made from all the over dough after you cut all the raised donuts. Chopped up dough, apple filling with a cinnamon make them into patties then set aside to rise and then fry them and put glaze on the Fritter
Steph awe you made my mouth water for a good ol' apple fritter!!!! Can't remember exactly last time I had one but been at least 6 months or more ago. I love apple fritters I usually got the little bit of glazed ones. I bought them at a bakery in the grocery store. Yours looked really really good. Thanks for sharing your love for cooking.
Well I can tell ya that they do use sugar in the dough Steph. I use to many years ago be a scratch baker and know they put sugar in, and the apples where cubed. But they always say that home made is better then store or shop bought. You put time and love into making food so it taste a lot better and different for sure. Enjoyed watching and I am sure with all the fruit trees ya have planted that you will be making fritters with other fruit for sure. Luv ya guys ❤️ 💙 💜
Hi hun apple fritters we’re used also as a evening meal served with corn on the cob and peas in England 🏴 mainly Sunday meal after roast dinner as it was a simple thing for kids to help with as many years ago Sunday was the day of rest never had any shops etc open it was just a family day
Good Job Stephanie! I like that you are so willing to do the original then add a twist to the next batch. I occasionally enjoy an Apple Fritter. They are not my favorite donut but I do enjoy one. My favorite is almost anything chocolate, lol The recipe certainly is easy so I will give it a try but like you I will cube the apple. Tomorrow is shopping day so I'll pick up the apples. Thank you for sharing I always enjoy Denman videos!
I think you will find that the batter is more like a ‘DROP SCONE’ ( BISCUIT to you;-) I have made lots of both DROPSCONES and FRITTERS (fritters have a slightly thinner batter which you can have as thin or thick as you choose but, that was definitely a drop scone batter) Google a modern fritter batter and test that also . . . “DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS”🤗 Absolutely adore your posts and you are one very talented Lass🙏🏻🥰
Must be fun and interesting to use that old cook book, when I was young I had one with just the basic ingredients, it's probably all they had. I would think those probably taste more like a biscuit?!! When I was in school we could take a class on home eck? Cooking , setting the table proper, Lol! ironing, sewing etc, hey, needed to learn somewhere
I always follow recipes to the tee the first time. If we make changes to a recipe, I will write the changes on my recipe card or in my recipe book. I figured those are my cookbooks and it's ok to write in them. LOL. Funny, I was thinking cinnamon would be a great addition and then you said it. I will have to give this one a try, sounds sooooo good. Thanks for sharing. TTYL, my friend. ~~~~Tina
Speaking my language Steph! I would choose an Apple fritter any day over a donut! I think I would like the last one with the extra spices and the glazed topping. That is most closely to what we have today. Thanks again for sharing. We have a church around here who has perfected them and sales 1,000 and 1,000 each year at different functions and events. They use the chopped apples in and spices in the batter but they roll them into a little bigger than a golf ball and they deep fry them because they have so many to do at a time and they dust them with powder sugar! So that could be something you might want to try! They are wonderful as well!! Sending Blessings to The Denman Homestead!❤️
We used to have a donut shop locally that we would go hang out in. They had a small cafe there as well. We talked to the owner a lot. He told us that apple fritters are usually made using the bits and pieces of dough from all the other donuts that they make for the store. So the cuttings from making glazed, cake, old-fashioned, long John's, etc, are thrown into a mixer and then apples are added and then the dough is fried to make the fritters. The glaze is what makes it so sweet.
It was a way to use up the scraps and avoid waste. Pretty creative! Basically, fritters are the "trash" donuts of the donut shop. 🤣😂🤣 I love em though! They are my favorite! I love the crunchy edges and chewy middles.
Hi Steph I’m bad I’m 2 days late watching your video and omg I’m going to have to try the apple fritters they look awesome thanks so much for sharing the recipes with us stay blessed sending love to the whole family
Mmmm I never ate those, I'm really curious now. They look delicious. 😋 I played some video's on autoplay and was busy in the garden. So I didn't comment on all of them, but I did enjoy them. 💜💜💜
Going one more high on the pickles? 😂😂. OMG, I’m imagining canned veggies stored under Elora’s bed. Opening the closet and jars of canned veggies falling out. Opening your car door and more falling out. Gonna’ be a long growing season. Would have been fun to keep track of the number of zucchini you pick. Thanks for the education. ❣️
I’m going to have to try this one. My hubs loves anything apple. But I’m like you, I might have to tweak it just a bit. I like anything simple and quick but with good flavor. Love the he 3 variations Steph. ❤
WOW Steph they all looked good the first one looked a lil flakier the others look more fuller dough. But I can’t comment on taste dang it but my mouth was watering guess I’ll have to make my own! Thank you for sharing as always stay safe god bless y’all and see you on the next one.

Great that you are using the old recipe.
I wish I had my momma’s recipe for dried apple turnovers. They were the best, and the dried apples had a totally different flavor.
Good job Steph I must remember to go back to this video so I can make them
