Thank you for posting this. I was at this game but don't remember much about it, I was only 10. We went to all the Balmain Craven Mild Cup games that year including the final. The one thing I do remember was a punch up on the hill after the Balmain Norths game between two opposing fans. Cheers
WOW! What a great video. The Tigers had some good players back in those days. I didn't get to see many games that year as I was away working. I think this pre season comp was previously called the Wills Cup. The only pre season cup game I remember going to was against Canterbury at Leichhardt but that would have been '77 or '78 I reckon.
This is the pre-season competition, and not the mid-week competition. Well, yes, Balmain won over St. George here and went on to make the final of the pre-season. It was in the mid-week competition in which St. George beat Balmain 16 to 5 but Balmain still went through to the next stage of the midweek competition and St. George were still nevertheless eliminated because that stage of the competition was four team round-robin and Balmain went through on points scored for and against, even though St. George did beat them.
Eric do you have the 1980 craven cup final Balmain vs manly? It simply didn’t exist I did ask Wayne Pearce as I had all his tapes but he didn’t have it either
The only thing I ever saw of that was sports news excerpts on the TV the night of the match or soon thereafter. I remember radio updates and telling my dad that in the first half Balmain was creaming it and so he said that Balmain would have a top side that year, and then it was Manly-Warringah creaming it in the second half, and prevailing.
Thanks for the upload. 🙏
No problem!
Cheers mate. Wayne Pearces rookie year, what a legend.
Thanks for putting up these old games from my childhood.
Glad you like them!

Just a couple of tries if I recall
We forget how good the Moose was as a commentator.
Often forgotten because he was a Manly man. He was good but also had some errors in him.
