Two heavyweight teams, stacked with quality internationals. Will Boyd lead the Wires to the big dance? He has Blocker Roach by side up against Shelford. Or will Hanley show his brilliance, once again.

1968 World Cup Australia v Gt Britain Match 2

Australia up against the old foe Gt Britain. Australia had won the Ashes in 1967 on English soil and must be considered favourites. New players to the Australian team were Eric Simms, Johnny Rhodes and Fred Jones and to the British team, Mick Shoebottom, Mick Clark, Robert Haigh and Kevin Ashcroft. Not the usual niggle and foul play which gave the 62000 crowd some scintillating play.

Gt Britain undefeated in the lead up and Australia with only one victory were obviously the underdogs. Gt Britain had won the Ashes a few months earlier in Australia and were expecting another trophy.

Dean Rampling was tough , But he’s lucky he wasn’t badly hurt , That was dangerous
I want a Time Machine to transport Jerome Leuai back to when pissy little halves got smashed if they were cocky

Great video!
Amazing run and try by Coote,Ron is a Immortal a travesty he isn't given tha accolade by clowns in my opinion deciding, a disgrace, Ken Irvine another wonderful Immortal, but they give to a player who says he used coke for much of his career I recall on TV
Top try th poms 1st one,Australia went on a penalty goal shoot out sadly to b up 8-5
The Kiwi ref seemed like a no mess kind of person. Trying to establish his authority. Boy, aren't the scrums a license to go in any direction for a penalty
Several legends on the park there, for Australia alone - Raper, Coote, Beetson, Langlands.
I am continually amazed at how good Beetson was in the late 60s and early 70s.
ABC TV coverage. Commentator is Norman May
It's no Norman may 😅
It's not Norman may 😅
2:34 #1 Phil Ford for GB. Instead of trying to tackle Toovey, tries to punch him in head 4 times (very brave targeting smallest player). GB got smashed 30-0 by Manly (1988). Coach Mal Reilly stuck in 70's & GB looked like rank amateurs
do you have the one when Steve Mortimer punches Craig Young in the head ?
Love these games. RL was at its best from the '50s through to the '80s I think.
Red hot Aussie side , coached by the great Harry Bath.
Ray French playing. Great first try
The ref had a blinder for the Kangeroos
They all had ball skills
Cool, has never seen these two at their peak.
Their efforts and play just stood out in the game.
I wonder what we will see out of the 1966 series.
Rex really was a dinosaur!😂
Love these old clips. Did you convert all ur old VHS to digital?
Yes. Plus got stuff of old players. Swapping a bit.
Beautiful .
great to see GB vs Australia tests
Hard men, what a joke, most of them were a bloke on the ground getting hit, a king hit or head high tackles.
Absolute disgrace, dirty filthy players made out to be idols
Epitomises what the doggies were about. R.I.P legend blue and white forever ❤
Thanks for uploading. I'd heard this was an iconically violent game. You could sense it change in the second half, and you could hear it in the crowd reactions, even if incidents weren't always caught on camera. Did you sense that when you watched the whole thing?
@alistairbanks6595 GB were rightly the favourites after securing the Ashes in Aust and undefeated in the rounds of this Cup. Aust only beat NZ and lost to France in the lead up to the Final but were always safe due to F/A. Expecting fireworks from the start and apart from the usual niggle between both packs it was left to Hynes and Sait to stir up the passion. First 20 minutes was all GB. The halves and Reilly were moving around freely and creating space for Myler and Dutton. A try went begging which is part of my clip. In hindsight (nearly 54 years), the plan of gaining field position and taking shots at field goal back fired and this with Dutton's 1 from 5 shots at goal was too much to overcome in a tough match which had limited opportunities. Aust stuck with GB for the 1st half and took their only opportunity when Reilly off his own line tried to knee the Aust tackler as he was falling which left him open to have the ball stripped/dislodged and the Aussies pounced and strolled over for what was probably a massive shot of confidence. I feel this is what every one at the game, players and supporters were feeling during the 2nd half. The game was controlled by the forwards and played as such. Fortunately, both sides had players with flair to keep the match interesting. The 2nd Aust try was unbelievable which shows how one slip up in defence can turn or in this case seal a match. The last 20 minutes, saw the GB forwards increase the niggling tactics and don't take me wrong it was reciprocated but if you are after points, at some point you have to play footy. GB won the scrums 21 to 11 and the penalties 19 to 7. The 1st half GB had plenty of ball and field position so it must have been deflating to go off behind even though it was 5-4 I think the try was quite telling. Back to the last 20 minutes, I could feel that GB (yes, I knew the score) were playing as they had lost. The halves stepped up again and offered some hope but the Aust pack remained solid. I could not understand how Bob Fulton was Man of the Match (and I am a Manly supporter since 1966). Smith was better and the majority of the pack as well. My MoM was either Billy Smith or Shoebottom or Reilly. In saying that they played in what now can be seen as a well beaten team who had their chances and if the game was played the following week would have had a different result. Now in response to what you asked, I wonder if the crowd were reacting to how the game was progressing instead of any specific incidents and needed to do their patriotic duty in supporting their team and "booing" anything that represented a misdemeanour. Here is my email, ceagle666@gmail.com and I can share some articles of the tournament if you like. Eric
@@eagleeric2598- I was fortunate enough to meet the match referee , Fred Lindop, several years ago now, and have a long discussion with him in which he recalled this particular game. He told a very good story about the GB prop Dennis Hartley who he had reason to caution during the match. When Lindop pulled Hartley over , the prop asked him “what’s that for” ? Lindop said “Dennis, you hit their number 10 when he wasn’t looking”. Hartley replied “ Aye Fred, that’s the best time to hit ‘em”! 😅
@@E171955 Haha!
@@eagleeric2598 Thanks for your reply! That will suffice! Love your videos.
I thought this tape was gone forever, the game has been talked about for years, great to see it again.
Ha, We beat them in the game. We beat the over-the-top Bias Ref and we beat them in the brawls too....lmao
What took you so long.
@@eagleeric2598 Algo recommends stuff. I have also been crook. Bloody flu
I like how the cop's get involved at the last punch up, now they don't do anything out on the streets.
Ken Irvine was super fast!
Great to see Wests in there!!
That was a mistake! Yes, good to see.
@@eagleeric2598 Ha ha
GB might have won if they didnt try to kick drop goals everytime they were in Australias quarter.
In hindsight, a strange tactic but it was 1970, 2pts at a time and scrum penalties.
Pretty hard game this one which ,I recall caused quite a stir in the press afterwards. All in all I think GB were a bit unfortunate to lose the match but still good to see that back then the two nations were neck and neck with each other in terms of skills and toughness! Thanks for posting .
@@E171955 never get tired of this story. These tough old school players always said things like that. They lived by the sword and they died by the sword.

Great comp!
AFL-levels of dogshottery
I tell ya what they could of used Big Robbo in Berlin back in the 80's💪...R.I.P mate 🙏
Remember him mainly due to his appearance but after watching this he was quite a beast. Small front rower with a ton of guts. RIP Robbo and condolences to his family n friends. Those days were some of the best of rugby league and Australia imho. Can’t say I like todays game and don’t want expansion. 10 ton12 teams enough.
Superb Eric, so good to see these matches, brings back such memories. The state of the ground was something to behold.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to see Wally giving as good as he got.
Like Turvey, always did
Yep, they played better than us. I would often tell the young people of today, that before 1972, everything was in black and white, the whole world had no colour, then in 1972, a miracle happened and colour was introduced into the world through an industrial accident. This video caught that exact moment...incredible!!
Industrial accident? Probably more important than penicillin
Bulldog legend, a great player RIP
Clear bias from Aussie commentators and ref over Lewis. 3:26, "He didn't miss Lewis, Lewis went down hard". Replay: English player very clearly missed Lewis. And 4:06, Lewis gives forearm to head of Eng player, Aussie commentator: "Lewis may have given him some." Replay: Not 'may', very clearly 'did'. No action against Lewis. And 1:38, Lewis does cop a forearm to head, Eng player gets 10 in bin. I'll give the ref a pass on this, but not the commentators, who are reading even the replays wrong
Good spotting. Certainly looked like a dive.
Even though I’m a Saints fan, I admired Robbo, always gave 100%, Bulldogs legend. R.I.P.
Sentiments alike across all opposing supporters
Played at Halifax 85/86 season, won the Championship with us. What a player! RIP Wildman.
Nice
Thanks

when cowards go bad .
I think this was the game in which Aussie prop John Sattler said to his opposite, Henry Tatana, at the first scrum: "I hear you've got a broken bone in your foot." Tatana replied: "Kick it and find out."
You would have to think twice
