      SUCH a great pity that you don't mention at all (unless I'm mistaken ) whether it's driven by a petrol (gas), electric, or (I expect very unlikely) diesel motor. Additionally, you don't say how long it's possible to use this device before it requires refueling, or recharging, which is also a shame. However, all the same, congratulations on your achievement !!

    It would be fantastic to see an electric version of it. This would allow for direct response in switching it on and off, and also less maintenance.

      Yes, we also dream of an electric version of the PowerPod. But unfortunately, according to our initial calculations, the weight of the Powerpad in the electric version will be significantly more on current technologies. But we are thinking about it.

      @@fulcrumengines2519 I initially thought buy the size and shape of the Powerpod that it was electric on the thumbnail. I get that the petrol powered version is going to carry a lot more useful energy, however I think it would be a good direction for the company to have an electric option.
      perhaps only enough battery power to get into in to the air ( say a 1000ft) and some emergency reserve. if its light and cheap enough it'd sell itself.
      Just thought of an awesome idea! - there's an Taiwanese company called Gogoro who are trying to push a modular swappable battery in Europe right now for electric scooters (there are other competing companies but the ecosystem is already popular in SE Asia) These batteries are about 5KG and must have a decent power density for the ranges I'm seeing. It would be very forward thinking for your company to look into using their modular batteries to get rid of the cost of batteries from your product.

    I’d LOVE to see this Motor combined with a TRIKE. Especially because I experienced a shattered Upper-spine (Thoracic, at level to Sternum/heart) with AMPLE integrated Shocks into such ‘safety systems’ including with such ‘trike’ setup. I personally have a weight carry limitation, carrying all the related weight would absolutely require me to use wheels.

      Kind disagree. A 25hp motor that pushes as hard as a 16hp paramotor would while using twice as much fuel, with as much weight as a 16hp rig would have but distributed farther away from your back so it feels heavier when taking off.

      Our solution uses a fan with a size of only 0.5 meters. Of course, it won't be as efficient as a 1.2meter propeller. It's physically impossible. But when using a ducted fan, we lost only 30% of thrust, reducing the diameter by 2.4 times. And we removed the aerodynamic drag of the paramotor hoop and the large propeller for free flight.
      We think it's a good idea.

    I was a hangglider pilot back in the day, but paragliding sure offers some advantages in portability and quick setup for flight.

      As a hang glider pilot, I have gotten into paragliders and back out about half a dozen times over the years. The convenience of paragliding is so attractive!!! but then you have a partial or full chute collapse in turbulence and you remember that all the convenience in the world is substitute for an actual rigid airframe like an airplane or hang glider. Its true...there are tons of excellent paraglider pilots that can keep things safe....but they have hundreds...usually thousands of hours of practice in kiting their wings so that they can handle them as naturally as you handle your fork while dining....second nature. If you just want to fly 50 hours a year and not practice every spare second...hang gliding has its advantages. but I am sure am jealous of wing handling masters in paragliding.

      My first “flight” dangling under a hang glider was in 1975. It was more of a plummet. My last was in 1981 when the technology had massively advanced. These look so much more appealing!

      @@volador2828 its a shame as there's nothing in the hang gliding world that can you give you the freedom I've seen the paragliders enjoy. I was in line at the Ferry in Seattle and a guy pulled his harness and wing out of his corvette and spent 20 minutes gently gliding back and forth across a tiny 30 foot tall ridge in light wind. There's no way in hell a HG pilot could ever have these opportunities. for a lot of years, I've had the idea of somehow incorporating Kiteboarding technology into paragliders....ie having inflatable rigid segments that act as a rigid airframe during a partial collapse. I am no engineer...but if it could be done, it might revolutionize the sport.

I use to fly all around there and when I moved to AZ many years ago I quit because the thermals that could collapse your wing in a second. I took my unit everywhere with me. Got an hour to kill? Out came the wing.... so, I know what you mean there!

    Brilliant prop cowling! That exhaust expansion chamber looks pretty exposed, with any ground strike it seems likely to get damaged, maybe a bar could be run along the bottom.

    I have a Sub 70kg hang-glider, your power-pod interests me for a reason that should interest all PPG (power para gliders) The sound is directed to the rear along the thrust line, NOT down to all the complaining people. To be able to drift by unnoticed allows us to keep our flying sites and allows us to be regulation free. Quiet Beauty 😎👍.

      I thought paragliders are pretty safe.
      Since you got a chute for emergency landing. Just be aware of your surroundings.

    This is it folks. Finally the best of both worlds. Been watching both paragliding and motoring for a long time and have desperately wanted to get into the sport. Both are prohibitive for different reasons and this definitely lowers the transport and effective areas hurdles a good bit. My next question is how much is this thing going to cost all composite. Because that's a struggle in the sport too, on top of proper training. Keep up the great work!

    Considering the vibration, it is a challenge to meet a few mm gap between the fan and inner housing, but you did it, good job.

Also, commercial airlines are not at the same altitude and there are rules to follow regarding airspace close to airports and critical areas. Duuh.

    I'd love to have ducted (or perhaps simple and collapsible is best for reduced drag when not in use) fans on the leading edges of my hang glider, powerful enough to launch with zero wind!

      You won't. Paragliders hate powered paragliders and powered paragliders know this solves problems that are not big deals. Price and safety will be big deals.

      @@richwilson7619 We tried to make a paramotor specifically for free pilots who want to fly where there are no hills and mountains to take off. For ordinary power paraglider pilots, a traditional paramotor is probably better.

      I think it is great and will work great! The design makes perfect sense for the next step in design regardless of who its original target group was meant to be. It ALMOST reminds me of going from propeller towards the jet engine for large commercial and faster flights!!

I began flying on the west coast of Canada where I lived 15 yrs ago, I have travelled to fly elsewhere and more locally where I live now ( virtual flatlander) but covid ruined most of that. This is what I have been waiting for, I know some think an electric ducted fan would be better but I don't feel comfortable running hot lipo strapped to me or my harness. Today while hiking with my dog I encountered an overwintering family of bald eagles that lept from the icy marsh they were sunning in and climbed out on a pretty strong thermal. I haven't soared with them for some time now. How much is this going to cost, North America, if and when this "thing in the news" ends?

    If these make it to final production status, it's rumored that although it will absolutely NOT be cheaper than traditional paramotors, but also not significantly MORE. If that turns out to be the case, we may see the decline of the traditional paramotor. For now, I'll just happily continue to cruise around in my Scout.

    Very graceful! - I have to admit from engineers point of view. The only thing which keeps me in slight doubt is the mass of the harness and the fact that you didn't mentioned it or compared to the traditional one. The torque is impressive, and you never used those creepy CG animations as most of the western "never come to realty" ideas - so for sure you succeeded. Even if the mass is bigger than the classic simple unit, the comfort and reduced drag will meet the mentioned qualities - maybe without anything abnormal - but still, the companies like yours should be inspiration for young aeronautical engineers. Keep up the good work!

      Thank you for your opinion and your encouragement. In our prototype, we used a temporary pod harness made by our forces. But in the serial product we plan to cooperate with well-known manufacturers of harness.

    OMG I'm love it. I have been watching para videos over the last few years and have been asking myself the question about ducted fans or air multiplier. There are a couple of videos where someone used multiple small electric motors to get off the ground (noisy, hook-ups on frame etc.). Later he came back with two large electric ducted fans. I can't remember what he said about electric verse combustion but there was good support towards a ducted fan. Good to see ducted fans being explored. As ducted fans and battery technology as will as small light and compact electric motors start becoming more popular I can envisage this possibly going electric. In essence motor and duct become one so tolerance between fan and duct wall will be in mm range so more efficiencies / power. By the way I know nothing about intricacies of motors and para so only personal opinion incase anyone gets triggered. Keep up the good work, may innovation lead the way so heavy fat guys like me can fly.

      An electric's fuel supply (battery) always weighs the same. But on fuel, your total rig weight slowly drops as the fuel is consumed. Gotta factor that in. 😉

      Yes, that's right, until you consider the batteries. The battery will be very heavy and bulky to fly for at least half an hour.

Considering the efficiency of the ducted fan and the reduced drag compared to a traditional paramotor it should be more realistic to make an electric version of the PowerPod than any other paramotor. 20 mins should be enough to find thermals?

      ​@@rolandmdill According to our calculations, the weight of the electrical version will be comparable only if the operating mode is only 7-9 minutes (climb mode). During this time, it's possible to gain 600-800 m altitude. If you want to climb for 20 minutes, even then the electric version will be significantly heavier than the ICE version.

Still hoping for an electric version when batteries with higher energy densities will be available!

      Yes, if the batteries get lighter, that would be great. Now, according to our calculations, the PowerPod operation time with an electric drive will be very short, only 5-8 minutes in climb mode. This is at the same weight with a PowerPod with an ICE.

    Great design, I'm excited to see this move forward. I wonder if it would be useful to implement a 'sacrificial' soft material on the inside of the duct that would guide the airstream while still preventing the props from disintegrating when making contact. This would allow the tolerance between props and duct to be even smaller. (not sure if the gain is worth it, but seems possible).

    I doubt this can be used for serious XC ... once you are in the big thermals that 20-25KG extra weight in the back will not help with balance.
    BUT ... Always nice to see progress in making regular paragliding more autonomous.

    Being that it's primarily used for takeoff and battery technology has improved so much, wouldn't it be better to have an electronic version? Would bring the manufacturing costs down and improve safety. Very little sound as well. Fantastic design guys!

      same noise. Almost all the noise is created by the chopping of the air by the blade. And the batteries have nowhere near the duration of a small gas tank.

      We also love simple, quiet and eco-friendly electric motors. But the weight of the batteries is too large, the electric version turns out to be excessively heavy.

      People do it. Regular paramotoring will get you around 15 miles per tank. As long as you plan out a route of gas stations along the way, you can do it. 😁

    Interesting concept, espacially the prop kinda hidden from the lines, well it would be quite noisy i guess but for a takeoff and clime it is nothing one would not bear! How much doest it weight now without gas and what is the ccm of the engine used, some 80ccm? Wish you good luck with the development! :)

      We plan to keep the PowerPod within 20 kg. Now the prototype has a little bit more weight. Engine power 25 horsepower, its volume is more than 80 ccm.

    Small diameter is inherently less efficient at producing thrust than a large diameter propeller. Great engineering for 1st version, future improvements like larger diameter and stator or counter rotating prop could improve performance and reduce unwanted torque.

      Yes, you are right, but we adress PowerPod for thermic flights where larger prop diameter will create more drag. A powerfull motor (25 hp) anf ducted fan technology give 50 kgf of thrust, its enough to gain altitude and find a thermic.

    I would be worried about thermal expansion/contraction on the fan shroud with rapidly changing flight temps and air pressures.
    I'm sure you worked it out. Great design. You might consider two variants. 1 vectored thrust. 2 tail fins, like rear canards.

      I know very little about this, and I'm not an engineer, but if the fan shroud is made of carbon fiber as is mentioned then it won't be subject to hardly any expansion or contraction I think. Forgot to say that I love the idea of vectored thrust, but that must add some weight or other difficulties and doesn't a parasail already permit directionality.

      Thermal expansion due to temperature changes is very small, about 0.1 mm. And both the fan and the duct are subject to it at the same time. This can be ignored.
      We used the variable thrust vector to change the pilot's posture on takeoff and in flight. It is not used to improve maneuverability and it is not necessary for a paraglider, it is already well controlled.

      @@KevinJDildonik You obviously don't understand the aerodynamic principles of the Multiplier . . . it's old technology (Toshiba 1981) & produces the same airflow with reduced power requirements and around 5 to 10 db LESS noise . . . Not a bad idea when it is strapped to your back.

    Mine uses two vented props, contra rotating, either side of the pilot, that folds away behind the pod, once altitude is reached.

      Concept is sound tho.
      There is a wan on youtube thats using a weedeater (or something) in each side and another chap in the USA that sells them, but the design doesnt fold in behind, and the frame looks unstable. I think its called the Minnie

    Today's paramotor harnesses don't feel like sitting on the chair (except for FlatTop). Back is partially reclined, hips pointing forward up, you are cocooned. My longest paramotor flight is almost 4.5 hours and that was not bad. This concept looks good though, especially given lack of large harness and prop which can catch lines on slack during deflations. Advantage of paramotor though - you don't need bumpy thermic weather to stay aloft.

    I like the design. It seems a lot better than traditional versions. I just wish it was electric so you didn't have to hear an Internal Combustion Engine chugging away behind you. Electric would really simplify production as well as be better for the environment. If you are only using the motor to get into a thermal, it seems an electric motor and a lithium battery setup should be possible at a lower weight than an ICE version. You could even incorporate additional features, like putting the fan into reverse just as you land so you don't fall over sometimes. Really handy in rough terrain and forced landings to have direction control.

      Unfortunately, no. The electric version turns out to be much heavier than the gasoline version with any reasonable operating time. Only if the climb mode is less than 5-7 minutes, you can make the same weight or less.

    Paraglider pilots that try motors tend to lean too far forward when launching with a motor... that leaves the motor pushing them downwards, and results in a swing forward once lifting off the ground. If you hit sink at that point, your ass hits the ground first, and you break stuff. Angling the motor unit downward a bit for launch would be preferable.
    I fly a paramotor and don't find the upright sitting position uncomfortable at all.

    So it would also come with a battery starter?
    would this be suitable to fly with the regular paragliding wing or is a paramotor wing required?
    how long could you run the engine with the fuel supply?

      Yes, perhaps the engine will be with an electric starter. We are now deciding which starter will be better - manual or electric.
      The engine operating time at 75% power (climb mode) with a 5-7 l tank is at least 30 minutes, this is enough to gain 2-3 km of altitude.

    What’s the fuel capacity and motor run time average? This seems like a very elegant evolution of the current paramotor design; as a paramotor pilot, I’m very interested in the ducted concept for both safety and compactness. Currently, I have to break down my machine to fit it into my car. This would alleviate that, while adding safety and aerodynamics.

      The volume of the gas tank is planned to be 5-7 liters (it should be compact enough for our concept). This should be enough for 30 minutes of operation at 75% power (climb mode). During this time, you can reach 2-3 km of altitude.

      If you fly in the horizon, without climbing, the flight time will be much longer. But the concept of our PowerPod involves climbing up to the first thermal, and after - free flight.
      It seems to me that this is a good opportunity to spend 2-3 or more liters of fuel in order to catch a thermal for sure.

      @@firedawg1998 depends on the glider and wing loading. With a vitarozzi moster 185 I can get 4-5 liters per hour on a gin pegasus 2 . On an ITV piper it is closer to 6-7 lph but is much faster horizontal air speed.
      These guys are probably much closer to the piper wing, but it looks like they are using an atom80 engine which gets phenomenal fuel economy compared to my engine.
      Their fuel economy issues are almost entirely caused by the small prop and the blocked intake. Some thing like 80% of your thrust is created by the outer 20% of your prop. Shrink the diameter , and you exponentially reduce the linear distance that tip travels. The only way to make up for it is higher engine rpm. Now block half the intake with an engine and pilot. Ducting helps a little but its pretty obvious, not enough. There's a reason ppg are the way they are and it isn't because no one thought of it.
      Cool concept, but I think it's a mistake to compare this to paramotor. It's different applications with a different purpose entirely.

    This looks like a wonderful design in so many ways. I am curious how the feet and legs are removed for landing, though... can the pilot take the legs from the bag without releasing a seam, or removing hands from the controls?

      Yes, of course, without any problems!
      The pilot can take a vertical position with his legs open without the help of his hands, just like in a regular pod harness.
      I think we'll make a video of the full flight, since the landing raises questions.

      Unfortunately, we haven't done any noise measurement tests yet. Subjectively, the noise is similar to that of a regular paramotor, but in a different range, due to higher fan speeds.

    I am concerned about the large bottom pipe. In a normal paramotor, the lowest part isn't mission-critical: it's a frame or the fan cage. What if the pilot hits that pipe during landing?
