Nonetheless, it's a 4 player battle across each track in the game.

@@markheying2830 the explanation is that Wario as a character is not as fast as Yoshi or Toad + the fact that the person using him probably almost never played the game as you can especially see in the Yoshi Valley race...
The player using Wario is either very inexperienced or just flat out sucks.

This whole video in a nutshell explains the best Mario Kart 64 characters to use from best to worst.
I've played this game a ton and done a lot of time trials. Yoshi/Peach/Toad is essentially the same character. Mario/Luigi essentially the same. Bowser/Wario/DK too. The first trio is the best all-around and the only one you can set the best times with. I can struggle through a 4-player Vs. w/ Mario/Luigi, but I'd never use one of the big characters. They just take too long to get going again from a stop.
@@joelakat Actually, the heavy weights are better than the middle weights: they can dizzy other characters if they ram them and they are faster than the middle weights. The thing is this: both the heavy and the middle weights have the same top speed; however, the heavy guys have better acceleration so they reach their top speed first, that makes them faster.
The only advantages of the middle weights are that they can't be dizzied by the light weights and that they can dizzy Toad...well, Luigi needs to ram Toad with a mushroom to do that. After taking all of this into account, Luigi is the worst character of the game and then he is followed by Mario.
Despite the differences, any character can win a tournament, I once saw Luigi winning a tournament where the players raced in the 20 tracks. The Luigi player said that he thought that Luigi had the best Mini Turbo of the game; however he never explained why, so I can't explain it either.
You can win with all of them if you know how to drive them properly.
I literally only use Mario and can get 80 speed from constant drifts or 97ish or 100 speed with star drifting

It's a ROM hack. If you watch original footage, you'll see it looks a lot lower in resolution (the original doesn't look HD).

why is there no music?
As I recall, there was no music in 4-Player races, but there was in 4-Player Battle Mode.
A measure Nintendo took to reduce load on the console with the screen split 4 times.
