More that she just not trusting them, she did not want to get attached to them and lower her guard. Stems from the same place, but it's more fear of trusting than actual distrusting
It's not that she didn't trust them, she didn't want them to get close to her because she only saw herself as a burden who uses people and brings suffering.

There's actually a reason for the snails as it turns out. I read an article a ways back about some weird pseudoscience where old timey science guys actually thought that snails- when cut in half and allowed to regrow into two new snails- kept a telepathic link to each other. One particular guy had this idea to build a telegraph using this sympathetic snail thing. It failed- well obviously it failed because snails aren't psychic. BUT, in the one piece world, dreams are forever! In Oda's world, that experiment worked. Here's a wikipedia article all about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasilalinic-sympathetic_compass
@@agustinfernandez5115 For a while I was VERY into reading about the age of sail and I've always been into both science and pseudoscience. It led me to all kinds of interesting history like the Cavendish experiment establishing what the gravitational constant was, and then there was this. It's some fun history! I did get a few details off there. The wikipedia article I linked instead mentions that snails mating form that link instead of cutting them in half doing it. I may have confused that notion with a similar idea about using starfish cut into pieces to communicate. I adore that cute illustration of that old man looking on in delight at his functioning snail telegraph though.
@@agustinfernandez5115look man, if you're curious enough, you'll come to some pretty wild shit on your search for knowledge. Did you know that cows kill more people in a year than sharks? One thing about choppers fight, is that he decides he needs to become a “monster”, something he always hated being called so that he can save his friends.

Back in Franky’s flashback we find out that he hated Robin’s mere existence. He blamed her for his master’s death. They wouldn’t have had to keep the blueprints of the ancient weapon Pluton if she didn’t exist. And during the course of the arc he ends up comforting her and tells her that “Existing alone is never a crime.” Those were the same words his master had told him about the battle ships he had built. Franky was regretting ever building those ships because it was used to hurt the people he loved. Everything comes around in a circle in this series.
@@blackpepper2610 It's kind of both. Franky intentionally kept the actual Blueprint hidden in case Robin was going revive the Pluton but after seeing the Straw Hats in Enies Lobby he realizes Robin would never revive the weapons and destroys the blueprint in front of Spandam's face. So in a way Franky was wary of Robin being potentially evil or being used. He does say her existence is not a crime earlier but he still had the blueprint then, as a counter to her knowledge so he was still gauging her.
I think a lot of One Piece fans just have accepted how great it is. Technically we know what a masterpiece it is, but seeing someone experiencing everything for the first time is such a reminder. I love it so much, it was my biggest inspiration when I was younger and I should definitely look it up again..

@@soarimg Its basically confirmed. Zoro doesnt actually multiply himself 3 times, thats just an illusion. Kaku himself said that he created that image through sheer will, and haki is willpower.
Did you catch the interaction between Franky's and Robin's backstories? Ships aren't evil unless used for evil. Knowledge isn't evil unless used for evil. And Robin has the right to exist.
i think Oda was talking about children/creation. Ships are to Tom and Franky as children. Its why Tom hit and got so angry with Franky telling him that he should never hate his creations and disown them. and this was after Franky's ships hurt Tom they did evil/ were used for evil. quote: "they are are not your ships?" "you can say anything but that!" Tom. Tom goes on to say that even if Franks ships destroy the world he must love them! That Franky must always show pride in what he makes and never regret their creations. Its why Tom said with a DON that he was prideful he helped Roger because the Oro Jackson was his creation.. his son. Its the same with Robin.. her existence is a seen as sin as she is a demon who has abilities to read and uncover dangerous knowledge. Thus she was told she must die and the very idea that she came into the world was wrong. Franky telling her her existence is NOT a sin mirrors what Tom told him about his ships. [thus Oda is talking about Robins existence and not knowledge because he had Frank address her directly] Luffy and his Nakama fighting for her life is them shouting Toms and Sauls words that Robin deserves to be live and loved and her existence is anything but a sin. Robin before that lived with the idea that her life was a sin and that she can never be loved/cared for ever. its a deep ass message if one goes deep. *Spoilers*** Later on this will be tied to Ace and Whitebeard. its a theme Oda uses with those in his world who are seen as "dangerous" Luffy never questions it/thinks on it but after the war Luffys existence is also seen as a sin by the world Government/ something that must be erased.
Lol, at 41:12 I honestly thought you were gonna say 'I cried like a... b*tch' cause that's how I described myself to my friends when I talked about this moment. RIP Merry, permanently docked at Sniper Island ❤❤
@@weadon44 Where is sniper island located? In our hearts remember... So saying Merry permanently docked at Sniper Island is brilliant. @DS MANIAC great if u made this up.
Fun fact: Oda's tears can be seen on the original drawing of Merry's goodbye page. It's edited of course, on the magazine/volume version but Oda's original papers are sometimes shown in Exhibitions and you can see it for yourself.
@@iamdivan7368 Yeah, apparently Merry's death scene took so long to finish because Oda kept crying. He didn't want any of his assistants to finish the page because he himself wanted to draw it.
@@DeclanVH Not really, he just likes to keep his characters for events in the future I guess. And I remember he doesn't use the word "kill" much because his grandma told him it's terrible and he understands the gravity of a real death. He's only cried few times while drawing, one being not even a death (Vivi screaming for the fighting to stop while no one hears her in Alabasta). I don't think he cares about crying when writing the story.
The voice actors of Robin and Luffy on that "I want to live" scene was amazing. The same with Usopp and Luffy near the end. The joy we get One Piece fans when we see people getting into One Piece is just great.
I remember this moment as one of the many times One Piece has brought me to ugly cry. I'm not an easy crier, but man does Oda know how to pull heart strings!
An important point to robins backstory is that Saul has a "D" in his name. Back in Alabasta Robin saves Luffy after his fight with Sir Crocodil asking him !Why do you fight? All of you who carry the name of "D". Making the Connection between Luffy and Saul. Maybe even saving Luffy from certain death, in memory of Saul. And that more than 200 chapters before Saul is even introduced. One Piece is so good.
I love that you started referring to the Straw Hats as "we" and "us". One of the best parts about One Piece is that it makes you feel like you're part of the crew, through and through
Oda seamlessly interweaves Franky's and Robin's stories together when Franky tells Robin that it's not a crime for simply existing. For Franky, it's a call back to when he despised the existence of the battleships he made that led to Tom's death. Tom smacks him across the head and tells him that something isn't inherently good or bad but in fact depends on the user. Similary, Robin has the weapon of being able to read the ancient language but it is up to Robin to make that a good or bad situation. It's never a crime for simply existing! Oda is a genius!
You literally worded this perfectly dude. I’m a naruto fan who came over and started watching one piece to see what the fuss is about and Oda definitely didn’t disappoint😅
In the grand scheme of things that's such a small moment, but I love it so much. And I love that Franky, basically a complete stranger at this point, is the first one to really start to crack through Robin's shell to the root of her fears.
You literally brought tears to my eyes when you spoke about Robin and her mother hugging. As a parent myself, I can absolutely understand your wish to wake your son, as I felt the urge to hug my daughter right before you said it. Also, Sogeking shooting that flag is still my favourite moment in One Piece.
"I'm just not strong enough for this series" No one is, even Oda (he admitted in an old interview that he often cries while making One Piece, and to be honest, I'm not surprised)
From some information I red. It is said that Oda cried while drawing the burning Merry and it took more days than it should be to finish because Oda could not stop crying. And also said that the Original drawn paper has tears of Oda in it.
The irony that Zoro's warning to Robin at the end of Alabasta was based on mistrust. And that the feeling was mutual which is why she took it in stride, but in reality, it was Robin being rejected like she always has been, was a hard hit. Then when the Straw Hats learn Robin's story and Zoro says that now everything makes sense, it must've been in that moment he accepted her fully as a crewmate. And finally, during the climactic fight between Zoro and Kaku (Long Nose Giraffe Man Guy), Zoro is fighting on the back foot most of the fight until Kaku makes the mistake of slandering Robin's name. At that moment, the fight pivots, and a dark aura emanating from Zoro points at the throat of Kaku. Asura made me feel both Zoro's wrath and guilt over Robin and at that moment, he would no longer allow her disrespect, so Pirate Hunter Roronoa Zoro gave Kaku his walking papers compliments of Paulie and the Galley-La Company... GET BODIED! It's a subtle thread that people just don't mention about the nature of Zoro and Robin's relationship, but it's one that I love. Sometimes we're wary of each other as a survival defense mechanism due to what we've been through, but it's okay to admit when we're wrong about people. It's okay to let people in.
I really enjoyed the depth added with Kaku's insults and the thoughts of Robin triggering Zoro's Ashura spirit. It's a shame that it only happened that way in the anime. In the manga he just uses Ashura seeemingly out of nowhere (probably to avoid over-saturating the Robin flashbacks). Which is probably why not as many people delve into the nature of their dynamic as much.
@@ThatJerkassBard Asura is partially explain or speculated during the wano arc, the swordsmith and the user of the sword can imbued their will/haki into their sword and transform the sword, Zoro does have a cursed sword with him, we don't know the how or what power ashura is, but we do know where it came from which is the cursed blade
@@Travelling_Heart15 I think chapter 1010 gave us a pretty good implication of where Asura comes from and what kind of power it is. We just need a more explicit explanation that will hopefully come later this arc.
Going into one piece I didn't expect to like luffy, but when he told soge/sniperking to shoot the flag, he became my favourite character in anime and manga
@@weewer3369 It's not just that but also the fact that he still has a lot of room for growth in that area. Being emotionally mature doesn't mean there aren't still things to learn and I love that Oda recognizes that and uses it in the story. Things like that are what make characters feel more real.
Before reading One Piece I didn’t think I was ever going to ugly cry at the funeral for a cartoon boat. 😭 Hundreds of chapters later I still tear up at the thought of that scene. Oda is truly one of the greats.
@@sechmascm this is often a misconception. Third time watching/listening to this and I can't overstate the amount of serotonin I've received each time. Merph's pure love for this series is just wonderful.
Me watching the anime as a kid when they get the ship: "That ship looks dumb. The sheep looks dumb" Me reading as a man when Marry sinks: "I'm sorry Merry! I shouldn't have said such mean things!"
Every ship in One Piece is laden with symbolism. Sometimes the symbolism is extremely simple. Like Buggy's ship resembling a circus tent. Sometimes it's surprisingly nuanced, like Mihawk's tiny boat not being big enough for a passenger and having no clear means of steering, showing his isolation and directionlessness in life. The Going Merry is a sacrificial lamb, and always has been, that's why it's a sheep.
I love how she went from "the big fight scenes arent really for me" to gushing about the fight scenes and loving how each straw hat fights and works together
Wow, I never interpreted that Bridge scene as Robin pushing them away because she doesnt trust them. I always thought of it as Robin understands them, but is pushing them away because she doesnt want them to be enemies of the world govt. Like she knows that the World Govt is after her, and does not want to have the Govt after the Straw Hats as well. But when Luffy understood that the World Govt is after her, he then took matters into his own hands. By shooting the flag, he is basically saying, your enemies are my enemies now too. It is so nice to hear another perspective into the story because it just adds another layer to it. Now Robin’s words hold a lot more meaning now, that I didnt notice before.
I always took it as she was starting love her time with them and wanted to protect the crew that let her feel like that while at the same time dying before she could face a betrayal from them that would hurt far more then any of the previous betrayals
The manga makes it absolutely clear, that Robin is pushing them away because she knows that eventually everyone considers her a burden because of her bounty, and she actually likes the Straw Hats, and she would hate it if they did it to her as well, so she pushed them away and wanted them to leave without her.
I think it is as acrifice that the government wont go after them, and only after they invade ennis lobby, and talk, she accepts, its fine to want to stay with them. Luffy and they are there for her no matter what. I think she trusted them but closed herselfoff for their good, which, he accepts, she doesnt want to. And maybe her selfworth and her will, to live. I mean thats lysops and robin in that situation, they have extremely low selfworth at that point and snap out of it . With sanjis speh and luffy never giving up on her. ust even worse , that she has a right to live her life. I man she was ready to die already in alabasta when luffy saved her, she, learned its ok to want just to live no matter what and is valid.
Welcome to the "I cried over a ship" club. You are now a true One Piece fan. also, the end of this review is the perfect summation of how One Piece fans feel. We all thought it was just a regular anime/manga but then you learn to love the Strawhats, and you realize how much you've cried and laughed and just never want it to end. It frustrates me when the main barrier for people who don't even want to try One Piece is its length. They just don't understand until they've experienced it. This is why I even watch people react to One Piece. I want to see people feel all the joys, sadness, triumphs and loss. You're reaction to this saga/arc/series is what I want everyone else to experience because it feels just so damn good.
"I never could expect this series to be this good" One Piece is literally the "don't judge a book by its cover" series. It looks so stupid when looking at it from the outside, but once you read it, you really understand its brilliance
@@growupjeff3287 true, but I actually remember the first time I saw One Piece in the library, it was volume 14 with mr 3 and I thought it looked really stupid. But then I read it
I was not prepared for how emotional the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs ended up being. I'm a grown man and cried real tears multiple times watching the anime versions. The voice acting was top notch
I was tearing up just hearing you talk about this phenomenal arc and the memories started coming back into my mind. Its such a special experience the first time around that cements anyone's love for One Piece by this point in the story and multiple rereads later reconfirm those feelings. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the series!
It just warms my heart that Merph remembers Sodom and Gomorrah's names (even to the point of which one is which) when she can't remember Lucci, Kaku and them. Just warms my freakin' heart ❤️❤️
This arc is regarded as the peak of One Piece for a reason. While other arcs and sagas are amazing in their own right both before and after, this arc is the culmination of so much character progression for so many of the characters and the crew as a whole that it is just propelled to the top. Enies Lobby is where the crew went from a group of friends to a pirate crew, and Luffy went from being a goofy friend to the captain of a ship.
Yeah Oda himself and said that he was worried if he could even write Ennies Lobby the way that he did beforehand. There are definitely many many more insane moments in One Piece and we are just now reaching the climax of the story but Ennies Lobby to be is still peak fiction, like nothing had me as emotionally as this arc.
nah the fights are full of conveniences but the rest of the content is extraordinary. its debatable whether or not its peak. As a saga it may be the best, but as an arc Water 7 is clearly better
Yeah, from a writing perspective this is one piece at its peak, and even if there is arcs with harder hitting emotional moments or just levels above in terms of hype, this will always be one of the communities favorite.
Robin's backstory (ep 277) was actually the first time I've ever cried over any piece of fiction (I often tear up but usually I'm able to hold back my tears 😅) Second time was episode 808, so I can assure you that even the recent arcs are as emotional as ever!
@@Raptain I somehow got spoiled then convinced myself that there was no way what I heard could be happening even after all that had happened then it happened and it broke me 😶
"People (who haven't read One Piece) complain about it's over 1000 chapter length. But I (every One Piece fan out their) just want it to never end." One Piece is a dream we all have been dreaming. One Piece is by our side in good times and in bad. Through fights, tears and heartbreak, through important moments and laughter, both inside the story and outside. Everyone has their own story with one piece. We find friends through one piece. And one piece is there as a light at the end of dark times (or a bad week) to offer us their light. And that's why one piece will always life in our hearts, not to be forgotten.
There is a single moment in Robin's flashback that make me shed tears. The moment Olivia screams 'live Robin!' I once read that part in my lunch in work. The sheer willpower required not to cry was too much for me. Embarrassing but that's how powerful some moments in One Piece are.

Everybody tough until Merry appears
Fun fact:
Before this arc, Robin never called them by their names, every time was a nick name because she didn’t trust them 😔
More that she just not trusting them, she did not want to get attached to them and lower her guard. Stems from the same place, but it's more fear of trusting than actual distrusting
Not with everyone, luffy was the firs, since skypiea

Here's a wikipedia article all about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasilalinic-sympathetic_compass
interesting
how the hell does oda find these niche things, more over, how did you? amazing.

Did Franky ever hate Robin I thought that was Iceburg?
That’s iceburg
@@blackpepper2610 It's kind of both. Franky intentionally kept the actual Blueprint hidden in case Robin was going revive the Pluton but after seeing the Straw Hats in Enies Lobby he realizes Robin would never revive the weapons and destroys the blueprint in front of Spandam's face. So in a way Franky was wary of Robin being potentially evil or being used. He does say her existence is not a crime earlier but he still had the blueprint then, as a counter to her knowledge so he was still gauging her.
@@-tom-8720 I would assume both because they are aware that she exists and everything that happened with Tom was her fault indirectly.

[thus Oda is talking about Robins existence and not knowledge because he had Frank address her directly]
Luffy and his Nakama fighting for her life is them shouting Toms and Sauls words that Robin deserves to be live and loved and her existence is anything but a sin.
Robin before that lived with the idea that her life was a sin and that she can never be loved/cared for ever.
its a deep ass message if one goes deep.
*Spoilers***
Later on this will be tied to Ace and Whitebeard. its a theme Oda uses with those in his world who are seen as "dangerous"
Luffy never questions it/thinks on it but after the war Luffys existence is also seen as a sin by the world Government/ something that must be erased.

Well said 💜💚
I really enjoyed the depth added with Kaku's insults and the thoughts of Robin triggering Zoro's Ashura spirit.

@@waynicliz I was re reading some chapters and I read Ussop story about how he would be happy dying as long as it meant he could finally say he’s a brave warrior of the sea. It really makes me think that he’s gonna die in the final battle of at least to save someone he cares about imagine how epic it would be a final attack to save his friends and him finally shouting “I am Ussop, a brave warrior of the sea” bruh Id cry so hard lmao

Piece of wood? BLASPHEMY!
Merphy gushing about One Piece is giving me life energy.
Third time watching/listening to this and I can't overstate the amount of serotonin I've received each time. Merph's pure love for this series is just wonderful.
Me watching the anime as a kid when they get the ship: "That ship looks dumb. The sheep looks dumb"
Me reading as a man when Marry sinks: "I'm sorry Merry!
Merry: gomen ne ~` hits so hard.
45 minutes of One Piece praising? Sure I gonna watch it
Also your because of your hair your shirt says 'Oda'
Merphy: "This is the saddest backstory ever."
One Piece fans: "The saddest backstory ever so far."

@@ibrahimmohammedibrahim9273 come on, no spoilers
The manga makes it absolutely clear, that Robin is pushing them away because she knows that eventually everyone considers her a burden because of her bounty, and she actually likes the Straw Hats, and she would hate it if they did it to her as well, so she pushed them away and wanted them to leave without her.
this was posted today !! How did you comment yesterday???
@@imtheguy3886 because I’m a time traveler. That or I was willing to pay for the patreon perk to see it early.
Yeah, it bad for in both manga or anime for "crying about a ship" part.
"I never could expect this series to be this good" One Piece is literally the "don't judge a book by its cover" series. It looks so stupid when looking at it from the outside, but once you read it, you really understand its brilliance
"One Piece is literally the "judge a book by its cover" series" ... You mean it's, *don't* judge a book by its cover
@@sericsson1996 haha yes, that was a typo, thanks. But the series is also as goofy as the covers suggests as well, so both works lol
@@Karlthuluu I don't know man, one piece has some pretty good cover pages. You might have been on to something the first time.
@@growupjeff3287 true, but I actually remember the first time I saw One Piece in the library, it was volume 14 with mr 3 and I thought it looked really stupid. But then I read it
Yeah, I judged One Piece because of its art work but dang, was I so wrong. One Piece is the GOAT!
I was not prepared for how emotional the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs ended up being. I'm a grown man and cried real tears multiple times watching the anime versions. The voice acting was top notch
"I never thought I'd cry over a ship like this." a sentence everyone who read/watched OP said during this scene.
Merphy: "They betrayed me, thats why I love them"
Merphy's therapist: "The One Piece will put my kids through college"
Robin's mom not being able to deny her is a callback to Bellmere, Nami's mom, not being to able deny her. It breaks my heart every time I read it.
One piece Friday’s make me realize what people get out of church..
It just warms my heart that Merph remembers Sodom and Gomorrah's names (even to the point of which one is which) when she can't remember Lucci, Kaku and them. Just warms my freakin' heart ❤️❤️
That's because they are biblic cities' names.
@@diego_fnogueira yh right how do people not know this 🤣
Yesss. Nobody mentions that zoro and sanji moment and its one of my favorite one piece moments ever
i absolutely love that
This arc is regarded as the peak of One Piece for a reason.
Robin's backstory (ep 277) was actually the first time I've ever cried over any piece of fiction (I often tear up but usually I'm able to hold back my tears 😅)
Second time was episode 808, so I can assure you that even the recent arcs are as emotional as ever!
You really did not cry during Marineford?

@@umaru6235 I think JozoTm said he watched three times the review and got teary eyes everytime, as I did too.
The moment Olivia screams 'live Robin!'
I once read that part in my lunch in work. The sheer willpower required not to cry was too much for me. Embarrassing but that's how powerful some moments in One Piece are.
The moment going merry was burned.
That made me cry like a baby.
Lol I'm listening to this review while working as a cashier and trying not to tear up as Murphy gushes over the emotional scenes.
