    I hate how people are saying this is not real muse. I don't think you can define 'real' muse. These extremely talented musicians have created their own genre in a way. Not that I don't respect others' opinions, i just don't see it. Muse always try something different. I can't think of one album all in the same genre ; apart from the 'muse' genre of course.

      washburnepiphone, you know that on, Black holes, Absolution and Origin of symmetry, they got songs that by your definition are not seen as "real muse" so i do not see what you are saying here.

      Yeah except this isn't different anymore. 2nd Law was. This not. From the sounds it could have easily been from the 2nd Law album. Not going to judge them too hard on this one though maybe the rest of the album will be better. We will find out in 2018.

    Everyone is complaining as if this is the first time Muse have experimented in another genre... Unless I'm mistaken, every album from Showbiz to BHaR was a different genre of alt and prog rock, and then The Resistance and The 2nd Law were both at very different parts of the pop/synth rock spectrum, and Drones was a combo of alt and pop rock. Seriously, the reason Muse is so great is that they've taken on so many different genres and styles and nailed every single one so stop complaining and appreciate a new song between albums since we've probably got a while til the next one.

      Connar Vitnell most of the critiques I've read are because this song is pretty similar to madness, and a lot of us think that's their worst song. I still love muse, I don't have to love all their songs. This one is just to bland for me. If you love it, that's also great. We all have different opinions

    As Matt said on Twitter, long time Muse fans are their biggest critics. I love and support them so much with every album cycle. Every band changes, and when you put any band in a box, you're just going to be disappointed, and so will the band itself.

    • @samcooke343
      @samcooke343 7 лет назад +9

      +MrBananaCheeks Personally I don't care which box they put themselves in, but for me they're repeating themselves too often. Madness was a fantastic track but they keep copy/pasting the same formula - first Dead Inside, now Dig Down. You could even argue this "new Muse" goes back to Undisclosed Desires, though I thought Madness was different enough.

    • @MrFloren95
      @MrFloren95 7 лет назад +10

      MrBananaCheeks Muse is my favorite band, but i don't think you must like everything your favorite band does just because of that. You must have critery and decide by yourself if you like something or not. If you like this song it's alright, i also like it but i don't "love" it, if you know what i mean. But just because it's Muse you're not obligated to love everything they do.

    As a Muser, I don't expect Muse to always do the same kind of music, and they definitely don't ! I really like this song, I find it hypnotising and addictive. OK, some of you guys may always want the "simple" guitar-bass-drums base, but Muse are more than this, they are pilgrims in music, "discoverers", they really do dig down to find a new definition to their music.
    And I love the way they do it.

      I think that I wasn't clear in what I first said (sorry, I'm French and sometimes I just translate things the way I would say them in my mother tongue !!). By "simple", I meant the instruments that are the basis of Muse's music... not that their music is simple... Is it clearer ? :-( . I can't find other words to explain. I do agree that dig down is a simple song (and still I do love it), but it isn't what purists may expect from a rock band, I understand that. Well, hopefully I made myself understand better... but I'm not sure !!!!

I like most of Muse's songs, yet I hope that the new album will contain again more uptempo guitar-oriented songs such as "Assassin", "Small Print", or "Stockholm Syndrome". Personally, this song reminds me way too much of Madness. I've never been a huge Muse fan so that doesn't really bother me too much but I can still understand why people disliked it. I don't think it's a bad song, just a bit repetitive.

  • @BlazingDemons
    @BlazingDemons 7 лет назад +78

    Everyone who hears this one song and thinks muse is selling out, they're not. Just because they release a song with no "real instruments" doesn't mean they have suddenly become a pop group. Muse was my introduction to modern rock music, so I'm a huge fan, and I think this song is brilliant. It's not pop. It's just a different subgenre of rock. I can understand why some people may not like this song, but there's no need to hate on it. Muse released Madness a while back, which had synthesized instruments, but in the same album they released songs like Supremacy and Panic Station, which went back to the classic Muse formula. This is actually a solid song.

      "Everyone who hears this one song and thinks muse is selling out, they're not." Funnily, I felt that when Supermassive Black Hole was released. And I do remember Muselive and Muse.mu users post things about how SMBH was a joke from the band and how they'd eventually reveal the first single to be Debase Masons Grog or Pee Candle. I didn't have an Internet connection before 2006, but I read about how people accused Muse of "selling out" when Time is Running Out was unveiled.
      I don't know if Muse have sold out, but I know for sure they haven't been the same band since 2004. One I don't like as much as I did. One which gigs have become full fledged shows. But countless talks for over ten years have taught me something: complaining will not make Muse become the superb space prog rock with tinges of classical music band I hoped they'd become when "Stars on Fire" was announced.

    • @BlazingDemons
      @BlazingDemons 7 лет назад

      Matt has become a parody of himself. He sounds like someone doing a bad impersonation of him. He's not grungy and rock anymore. He's...beta-male pop. The change in their sound directly coincided with when they started wearing blazers and taking "deep" photos of them walking off and looking into the distance with their hands in their pockets, like some garbage American pop rock band. I miss the spiked-blue-hair Matt and the rock-guitar matt, as opposed to faux-opera Matt, and I miss the actual drums. I heard this song on the radio today and cringed. I couldn't believe what had happened to the band I loved so much, haha. If you don't see it, you're trying not to see it. Most bands change their sounds and the die-hards say they love it no matter what, even if the band starts just clicking sticks together and doing African tribal calls ("It's classic Muse, even though every single aspect of the music is different!").

    • @RuiX95
      @RuiX95 7 лет назад +79

      whothennow24 I do see the change you are talking about. But they have changed so long ago that it became a part of them... I also miss that Muse, I bet we all do, but I think overall Matt himself should be the judge of whether he misses himself from back then or not. You don't have to like it (new muse), it's your taste. But just because this song wasn't made like the ones 13 years ago (!) doesn't mean it doesn't sound like Muse... Since then, they transformed and evolved to this type of sound in a way that it just sounds familiar! That's my point! And that, you cannot deny! Because I think what you are trying to say is: "Compared to more than a decade ago, I find this song's style to be rather shitty." Which is fine. It's your opinion! But this DOES sound like Muse... Just a newer Muse, but really not that new! Have a great day good sir :)

  • @Corvid

    For those not liking this song and fearing the worst... don't expect this to be much of an indication of what's to come on the new album. Anyone who's done enough music production and knows Muse can hear that this song (although well recorded and produced) is VERY simple in comparison to basically any song Muse have released in the last decade. They released it because it was finished, and easy TO finish while working on new material. Songs like Uprising or Hysteria with extremely carefully crafted sounds will have been demoed over months, and perfected over weeks because of the complexity of the sounds. This song is extremely simple in comparison, and thus a perfect quick release.
    Ok, it's not brilliant as a teaser for a lot of people, but Muse will always be Muse, they're not going to change that much! Chris is never going to be happy without some epic Bass riffs to headbang to, Dom won't be satisfied with boring drumming, and Matt will always need a platform for versatile guitar work. Everyone would have done the same if they had released "Madness", "Undisclosed Desires" or "Mercy" before releasing the respective albums, and assumed that the new album will be "electronic crap" as I've seen some people say. Those songs are hardly representative of the albums, though they don't sound out of place at all in context.

    Dig Down and find faith
    When you’re close to the edge
    With a gun to your head
    You must find a way
    When friends are thin on the ground and they try to divide us
    We must find a way
    We have entered the fray and we will not obey
    We must find a way, yeah
    Dig Down
    Dig Down
    Dig Down and find faith
    When they’ve left you for dead and you can only see red
    You must find a way
    Dig Down
    Dig Down
    Dig Down, find faith
    We won’t let them divide, We will never abide
    We will find a way

      I don't think the song is awful. For me, this is clearly not the best Muse's song ever, but it has his charm, like Madness. It is the kind of music that get better once you listen to it a few times.

    I love this!! I love the max headroom reference, the Aliens reference, I love this amazing chick kicking ass, not giving up, no matter what. It's such a hopeful wonderful anthem in a dark and depressing time. "When God decides to look the other way, And a clown takes the throne" "Dig down, And find faith ... You must find a way" He's not talking about religious faith of course, but faith in yourself, faith in your fellow man, faith that we can survive as humans somehow.

    Am I the only one who think that Muse's albums and songs tell one big long story? Probably not, but I just wanted to get this theory out there:
    So first there was Showbiz: Pretty normal, some sad love songs (Unintended), but already there are some hints in the name, Unintended, that saw something happened that wasn't supposed to. Then, there was some crazy girl (Sunburn), who, obviously went crazy, and she probably sent things into motion. (I'm not all to familiar with the other songs on Showbiz, but just roll with me, here).
    Then there was Origin of Symmetry: The name "New Born" already sounds like something new has been created (yes , I am aware that in the song they're talking about an actual new born child). After the crazy girl did something, some people just went into absolute happiness (Bliss and Feeling Good), probably because she was tricking them into thinking she was good. And we learned and made plans to go to space (Space Dementia), and some people started to fear that this crazy girl, who maybe started some kind of revolution, would turn the population into an assimilated robot-like collective (Plug In Baby), and then, mass killings were conducted (Citizen Erased). Things weren't looking good, and it was obvious now that the crazy girl was, in fact, crazy.
    Next, in Absolution, even the name of the album hints that this revolution thing is absolutely going to happen. People were fearing even as far as an apocalypse (Apocalypse Please), and people started to go crazy (Hysteria), and crazy girl started kidnapping people, and her hostages took a liking to her (Stockholm Syndrome), to help her take over. Then the government got involved, but they already new that time was running out (Time is Running Out, obviously). They didn't know what to do, so they told everyone that it was okay, but secretly, is was not, not at all (Ruled by Secrecy). And, when everyone found out, they got really mad (Fury).
    Then, we finally went to space, in Black Holes and Revelations, I guess. We found a lot of things, like Starlight, and Supermassive Black Holes, and to help fight against the crazy girl, we made exo-suits for people to fight (Exo-Politics). We also found new technologies and more people to help us (Knights of Cydonia)
    And then, we started our Resistance against the crazy girl. There was an Uprising from both crazy girl and the government. We also worked on more exo-technology (Exogenesis: Symphony). But, some people realised that it wasn't good for humans (Unnatural Selection)
    Then the government created some sort of 2nd Law to help us out. They were in Supremacy, above everyone else. Even more people started to go crazy and such and join crazy girl (Madness and Panic Station). Pretty soon, there were riots and anarchy everywhere and people had to survive (Survival), but then, one stepped up and lead the rest of not-crazy people left (Follow Me). This newly formed group explored to find things to help them (Explorers). The government, although in pieces, realised now, that the population was Unsustainable, so they made their own Isolated System to survive.
    Then, the new group, with their new leader, made a sort of military, but even they all went sort of crazy with their leader, as he was very strict (Psycho). And soon, they all escaped from him (The Handler). And then, crazy girl made Drones to help capture the few left people who weren't on her side (Reapers). With these drones, she captured some of the non-crazy people, and during the capture, they noticed that they weren't just crazy, they were literally Dead Inside. One of the few left people followed one of the drones back to crazy girl, and they captured her, and everything was set back to normal. Or so it seemed. The government came out of hiding, and decided to make clones of the crazy girl, as she had led such an amazing revolution, they needed more to help lead the country. But soon, she figured out, and she ran away (Mercy). She went into complete Revolt against the government, and there was one last war (The Globalist). And then, this is the Aftermath. This is what happened after the war. One lone solider brought everyone back together.
    Or, I might be completely wrong, and maybe this is just a really great, diverse band, making really great music.
    Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading. I'm sorry for my bad grammar in some places, but sometimes things are hard to word.

    Honestly, Muse's fan base can be the best and the worse at the same time. Very demanding, which is normal due to the high standards this band used us to.
    However... c'mom, can't you fucking see that:
    1st: this is one of three off-slingles they are releasing this year, not a single from an upcoming album;
    2nd: It's ok they releasing commercial songs like this, specially in the between of the releasing of the new album (2018)
    3rd: they have always been a very experimental band. They go from hard rock, to symphonic rock, to eletro rock... But still, you complain every new song they release;
    4th: name me a group or a band who's work you appreciate 100%. Not even Queen, ACDC, The Doors, etc. have 100% perfect songs.
    And this one is pretty cool, I see.

    Muse performed this song live at Red Rocks two days and it was incredible, RUclips does not do this song justice, go see them perform it live, you'll get the awesomeness this song is once you do!

      Couldn't agree more. Was there too and it sounded great live. The last minute of the song is incredible (guitar riff into the ooohhs). Solid opening song.

      I agree.. saw them live at Sydney .. i knew they would play this song first on the set list but i was surprised at how great this song played live

      I dont dislike the song but if a song is only good on concerts then they already kinda messed up. Not everyone has a chance to see them live. The song is okay but it's really repetetive

      TheHollowGrey That's your opinion , but you can't deny that the 2 songs have a very similar structure, slow repeating beat and riff in the beginning that leads up to a big ending.

    • @needsmoreclipping
      @needsmoreclipping 7 лет назад +3

      TheHollowGrey - Congrats. You win "Most Worthless Comment of the Week" award!!! To call Dead Inside a weak, shallow track means you obviously have no soul. Are you a ginger? Lmao. Kidding aside man, you have every right to not like any song you choose to not like. We all enjoy different things... but weak & shallow are things that specific track most certainly are not. Even if a person doesn't the music itself, it's still incredibly emotional. Cheers! :)

    My Favorite from this Album. Muse is Stunning Whether they are Raw or electronic. They gave us Drones after people crapped on 2nd Law (Which is a masterful work of Art) and now they are doing their electronic stuff too. They are capable of anything. and if people can't respect that then it's on them

    I'm a hardcore Muse fan, traveling half the country to see them and as any other real Muse fan will tell you their best stuff is their early raw music. But I've given hope that will ever happen, Matt tweeted back to someone saying old Muse was "Drones". All that is left is to embrace their new stuff. But I love this song, it's as if Follow me, Survival, and Undisclosed Desires had a baby. Yeah 3 parents, cause they're freaky like that.

    LYRICS
    When hope and love has been lost
    And you fall to the ground
    You must find a way
    When the darkness descends
    And you're told it's the end
    You must find a way
    When God decides to look the other way
    And a clown takes the throne
    We must find a way
    Face the firing squad
    Against all the odds
    You will find a way
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Dig down
    And find faith
    When you're close to the edge
    With a gun to your head
    You must find a way
    When friends are thin on the ground
    And they try to divide us
    We must find a way
    We have entered the fray
    And we will not obey
    We must find a way
    Yeah
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Dig down
    And find faith
    When they've left you for dead
    (Dig down)
    And you can only see red
    (Dig down)
    You must find a way
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Find faith
    We won't let them divide
    (Dig down)
    We will never abide
    (Dig down)
    We will find a way
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Faith
    Dig down
    Dig down
    Faith
