This is gold. I'm a teacher, not even of music, but these are the things that go through my head as I try to help my students see the big picture AND get through their current challenges. Hal is great.

You are right. We don't care, except to say that you're a real A$$ if you are hacking into anybody's private accounts. But, you're an evil bot anyway, so what does it matter.

I really wish I had something like this available to me when I was a kid taking the rcm exams. All of my teachers were so obsessed over competitions and high scores on exams they never actually taught me to really play. My buddies in a band asked me to jam once and I couldn't even keep up despite the fact that I was technically at a much higher level than them. They could transpose songs into different keys and they never even had lessons where as I had 12+ years piano and couldn't transpose

i am a metal vocalist in the black and death metal traditions and i write guitar and bass parts. No one else has been so singularly important as Hal Galper in terms of shaping my approach to music. I can't overstate how massively influential his videos have been. He's been very kind and generous in responding to some of my emails but he can't relate to the way I hear music.
An excellent supplement to this video, by the way, is his lesson on "what is practicing" -- conveys much of the same concepts in a different way. Also highly recommend "attitude is everything"
    Thanks so much

Hal has insights few ever have had,He is also hilarious/intense and believes in this. Early 1980"s he had a a few articles in Down Beat that changed my world. Went to NYC to study a day with him he changed me as much as anyone for the better. Thank you for posting! Thank YOU, Hal, always and forever.

I agree with Hal on a number of issues. He has confirmed some things that I discovered on my own.

He said exactly what I have been believing for years...better to understand how to wring the MOST out of everything you already know...it's easier to retain and implicitly requires creative processes to achieve such a goal.

I found these videos very very useful in my playing, especially when ad libbing solos. When solos change key from major to minor simply there are so many many ways to change with it. Especially with guitar because of the different modal positions and how you can vibrato and bend notes in so many different ways. I found that keeping it simple when changing key and simply bending to the next key change is very powerful

See...this explanation is seriously bottom line and I really like it...you can never watch one performance or one video when you check out someone. This is a really good explanation.

That's really interesting! I've recently started jamming with a friend who's a pretty accomplished cellist, and she said something similar. On the competitive circuit, musicians are trained to be performers, to play certain things the right way. When you sit down with a band with no sheet music, just your instrument and your ears, it takes a completely different mindset. Those technical skills are tools, but that's all they are - it's how you use them that makes you a musician.
