What a lot of people don't know is gameing takes very little to run via an internet connection. Games can run smooth on surpriingly low internet speeds. Its the downloading of those games most people will have to worry about. Streaming on twitch however is far more intensive and can create a problem. Great video, very informative!
Raspberry Pi 4 "console" is also a good idea. it uses as much battery as a phone (probably less), and it can emulate up to Dreamcast, PS1, PSP. Best part is.... it's like $35. Maybe $50-$60 if you also buy a case for it, SD card, and bluetooth controllers.
I live in a 30ft blue bird full time and having my PS5 was a non negotiable. It’s everything to have it with me and be fully gamable as a nomad. Props!

Thank you for addressing the audio levels! Hearing me outside the van is something I'm super conscious of as I plan my build, especially since I have many of the same hobbies/jobs as you (gamer, video editor, musician). Of course I'm familiar with sound-deadening techniques, but it's nice to have a bit of a baseline as to what my studio monitors will sound like from outside the van!

This was a big concern for me in considering building a van. I really like to game, and I feel like this is the solution to bridging the tech with the outdoors in a really nice way.

I work full-time remotely and need my work laptop + 2 monitors for more than 8 hours a day. And then, of course, I have to game on my personal laptop at night. Nintendo Switch is a great idea, you can even get small projectors with internal battery that can also run off power banks. With a 27W portable solar panel and a 30,000mah batter bank with PD charging, I can game on my switch camping as much as I like for days.

I'm in college right now and something like a van makes more sense, with the only 'affordable' apartments are in really bad areas. I'm not big into gaming, but the internet and putting a computer in a van defiantly is big for me
Just here to share 🕹 -I have 520w of solar(no isolator) -600ah of sealed agm batteries -t mobile(iphone 6s) and I use hotspot data -Xbox one and gaming monitor -Xbox one alone uses about 10amp and gaming monitor uses about another 10amps(200-250watts together) -I can play unlimited during sunlight, and play 4-8 hours after sunset(as long as it sunny the next day) -batteries are always above 55%, and if you need to download or update a game, use a cafe WiFi, those are GBs worth of data

I been camping gaming with my son for the last few weeks and it's a lot of fun, I get about 4 hours of playing time with a 4ah Ryobi battery only for the Nintedo Switch.
i’m going into the military real soon and plans to do van life after i get out. as a gamer, this gives me reassurance of having normal comfort and entertainment while living the nomadic life. i just have to learn more about the whole battery and electronics stuff. anyway, cheers dude!
This video is perfect for me. I'm gonna get myself a 4K gaming PC when new Navi GPUs come out late this year. I am EXTREMELY worried about the road vibrations. I have seen 2 other van builds with gaming PCs and they claim to have no problems. U really cheaped out on those batteries, at least get AGM if you couldn't afford lithium at the time. I've never seen a build use lead acid.
AGM is Lead Acid. Instead of AGM, I just have Flooded. There are 3 types of Lead Acid: Flooded AGM And Gel The only difference between AGM and my Flooded is that I need to fill up the water level inside. AGM water level is locked inside with technology. Same with Gel, but don't get Gel batteries they suck. So the trade off between AGM and Flooded is just one minute of monthly maintenance. My batteries are half the price of AGM, but just as good if taken care of. So almost every single build uses lead acid. It's just you might not have known because AGM is lead acid. Bought a van a few weeks ago and rather than try and rig up some crazy custom-built low-power desktop setup I'm thinking that since I mostly play older games anyway, a gaming laptop and maybe a low-power monitor (do those exist? LED) would be the way to go. Really appreciate the video and good to see how far you can get with a more budget solar setup. Hope van life has been good to you :)
Honestly I was thinking about going for a class c rv and doing a DYI later dowm the line. this is really good information as a gamer myself and wanting to live in RV's as I work for my career job Rad Tech.
You don't need a house. Live alternatively and have everything a house has, PLUS WHEELS to move your house anywhere. And you only need to spend on gas and food, no rent.

Inverter converts power to AC, then your laptop power adapter converts it back to DC. Ever consider getting a car charger for you laptop? Could save you lots of power.

Great video bud, I wonder how much additional work and battery installs you'd need to play for say 8-12 hours in total darkness/not enough sun for a charge. I felt it was a little sad that on nice sunny days you have to kind of pick between taking advantage of the sun to game or getting out and enjoying the day.
an option for other people to game on the go is also the android mini tv boxs on amazon they are like $40 and the newest ones can emulate all retro consoles up to dreamcast and they also are powered by USB so they barely use any power
great video. Have you ever measured your frames per second while playing online games on 4G? Im especially interested in your average FPS camping at national parks. Im curious if youre getting anywhere near 60 FPS
To really do this right, though, you probably want lithium ferrous phosphate batteries, and more than 300 Ah. You can DIY pretty well from cells. It's still going to cost considerably more than lead batteries, but it's worth noting that if you abuse your lead batteries by draining them on a daily basis, they'll die fast. So you'll wind up buying more cheap batteries instead of just one set of good Lithium ones.

Yes! No need to give up much of anything in van life. Some even have AC all night haha.
Games are more important to me than AC. 😂 Better social interaction than irl.

Keep them between 25% and 75% and they'll last forever. You can do 15-85% and still get amazing longevity.

I'm not sure about desktops. Some people do use desktops in vans though. I've seen a few here on RUclips

It's still going to cost considerably more than lead batteries, but it's worth noting that if you abuse your lead batteries by draining them on a daily basis, they'll die fast. So you'll wind up buying more cheap batteries instead of just one set of good Lithium ones.
