There are quite a few Arneson Donzi's out there. Both 18 and 22. They run really good. Way better than the Bravo boats. A powerful 22 with a Bravo is a nightmare of prop torque and paddle wheeling.
So how does this video show that they work? What speed was he going, what increase in speed do they offer over traditional prop, can you see increased efficiency from this video, does the video show better control?
@@msk3905 The boat runs with it for one. And I have been part of fitting three boats with 8’s and 7’s over the years. Never seen a boat that did not run better than with a shitty Bravo. Sure, as is always the case, when talking single engine surface drives they are not forcall boats. But it has been proven for decades that they work in the small Donzi’s. And on the Fountain, Formula and OL I helped install them on, no boat picked up less than 10% of top end and even more in the mid range. The Outeimits picked up 15% up top. Sadly people still drink Mercury’s koolaid while the material in the gears for the XR drives gets worse by the year. The gears in a 1999 regular Bravo is probably stronger than the shot you find in a brand new 2023 XR. But hey, if you wanna lose speed at an equal expense to an Arnie, I’m sure IMCO will happily sell you an SCX, and if you just want the shaft with no lube, John over at the Bravo Shop will be glad to help.
@@msk3905 A boat getting on plane fast, no chine walk, no prop torque and no porpoising. The last time I drove a 22 Classic, it had a 525EFI and a regular XR. It was not good. Unlike this boat, it had massive issues with both prop torque and paddle wheeling. People have installed Arnesons on 18's and 22's, they work! Why do you have it in for surface drives? Why are you so hell bent on putting this down? Are you affiliated with IMCO or the moron over that The Bravo Shop?
could you still water ski behind a surface drive? or would you get soaked? im wondering if you could ski slow enough before the prop comes out of the water.
I don't see that, perhaps a few seconds and that's it. Even if it did, it would easily disappear by playing with the engine tilt; and or adjusting the K-Planes/Trim tabs. Perhaps you've seen Donzis in the past that do, in fact; porpoise? Were they Donzis, under 20'; with big blocks or no K-Planes/tabs? That would do it. Not a fan of that big block set up, too much squat in back of boat. I also don't believe any boat under 30'; should have twin big blocks either, for the same reason. Weight isn't properly balanced. Apache Brave 28' is the only one I know of that can get away with it. With big blocks, the pache still sits on it's water line; perfectly! Doesn't work for Cigarettes 28' or Magnum's 27'. Too much, small blocks for both would be a much better solution.
Meat grinder. Reminds me of when I saw a guy get his leg hacked off with a standard outdrive. The boat operator backed up to him when he was in the water. Actually broke a blade off the wheel. His son saved his life, took off his belt and wrapped what was left.
Do these drives have 2 gears? It sounds like the boat starts out in lower gear then shifts before the drives are pulled out of the water. Or is the prop pitch variable?
Rik told me about this boat. Originally a stern drive with Arneson conversion. Every Donzi should be so lucky.

Donzis aren't just cool, they're Super Cool.
Love the sound of that engine!!
I owed a 36’ wellcraft with a set of 3208s into a set arneson drives was fast and it got so much attention
Man that thing sounds cool. Sweet boat Matt. :)

Excellent job Arneson..👍👍👍👍☝....
SMOOTH OPERATOR
Thats how a boat should sound.
Props to you
SOUNDS AWESOME!!!!!
Be hell on a skier lol
Mel Bch 🌴🇺🇸 ALWAYS wanted a Classic 22 but can't justify price! Hehe 🏄
Damn that was fun to watch.. now I want one!
Port of Stockton? nice video
I still have the copy of patent for this drive and all prototype . Walker Harris Made it RNLI.

You can buy a splash guard. Ski racers use them.
Did you have a Bravo one the boat before the surface drive ? If so how many mph did you gain by changing the drive ?
You can see the box for the conversion kit.
Nice
So cool!!
Glass calm and still the classic Donzi porpoise.

@@brendanperry6429 I’ve got a big block in my cobalt at around 23foot I want to say and I think I’ll keep it thanks

One reason I bought a direct drive inboard Mastercraft..the prop is under the boat in front of a rudder.
Whats the point of a surface drive? Less drag im guessing? Or more stable at high speeds only?
you are right about less drag. They're excellent for high performance boats
On the 22's they are better at just about everything.
More stable, less drag, better mid range efficiency, less issues with prop torque etc.
Do these drives have 2 gears? It sounds like the boat starts out in lower gear then shifts before the drives are pulled out of the water. Or is the prop pitch variable?
No. But in the beginning the prop ventilates and takes RPM. Then it bites and RPM goes down.
That would easily beat the big 38 ZR series!
Nope.
how you sir could you tell me what size prop is it please
Is that an ITS box on the back .?
No. It's the box which is part of the Bravo conversion kit.
needs a good pad on the bottom! not trim tabs!
Surface pierce 🐓
Don’t fall out the back! Limb stew..
Great job
Arent they running too deep?
No
Yes they are, the prop should be half out the water, drive is qay 2 deep!!!
How much power and what speed???
What areneson is this?
Probably 7M Bravo conversion.
Very nice. What engine do you have with the Arneson? Looks like you are in our boating area- Stockton.
you got it right, the boat lives in Lake Tahoe, but I usually make a day or two of the CA Delta.
Matt Pumphrey . How is the steering with this unit..
@@WoodiesANDwheels Nice setup. What kind of speed increase did you get over the Bravo? Are you running cleaver or Bravo style prop?
and that is just idling
That prop is 3' behind the boat. Be careful.
rooster tail are great show off but what a waste of power.
Didn’t appear to help much with the classic donzi porpoising.
Wide open throttle for a brief time b nice
