I share the concern of some of the other comments concerning the wood warping. I always assumed wood was placed on a flat floor and held in place weighted down with stickers to keep air gaps in order to keep it from twisting as it dried. I assume if most of the moisture is already out of the boards from sitting in a flat stacked pile for a while, that this system will work for later storage. I don't have your experience with wood, but in my own experience I see the top boards of a kiln dried lift of lumber always bow upwards towards the sun when sitting exposed outside on a jobsite after the tarp is removed. Perhaps a cool shaded storage area will see more consistent drying and not present you any problems. Definitely keep us updated on how this works out with your current inventory as well as how straight freshly cut wood acts in this setting. Always good to see things thought out differently!
It could be said that stickering lumber in units is the best and also using a banding machine to strap the bundles together to help keep things straight while in the drying process. shade and covered is best. I believe Western Red Cedar is more or less stable so may not need banding, compared to D.F.
Also, for your readers the basic rule of thumb is, for every inch of thickness, it requires one year to air dry each inch in most climates. Desert areas much less.
The reason boards are normally stickered horizontally, is that you can reduce twisting, cupping and bowing, by adding weight at the top of the wood pile.
If the wood is straight-grained and has little tension in it, these stickering methods you show will work well, especially the vertical stickering. Your ceder will probably be fine being dryed like you do in the video.
Some species like beech or larch here in Germany, are notorious for spiral grain and will often twist significantly, if the boards are not constrained during drying.

I would assume the vertical boards will tend to warp more standing on end. Most people sticker the boards horizontally and weight the top stack down as needed to allow the boards to dry in a flat position. The vertical boards will not have weight pressing down on them while they lose moisture.

My 4x8 cedar boards warped and they now vertical with weights on the ends. My pine 2x4’s did the same warp. But then I don’t have a room to store and all boards are under carport.m which has three walls and a roof.
HOW THE WOOD IS MILLED WILL ALSO DICTATE HOW MUCH WARPING AND CHECKING YOU HAVE TO ENDURE. MAYBE THE SHORT LENGTHS WONT TWIST AS MUCH. THAT SAID I HAVE STACKED AND STICKERED THOUSANDS OF BOARD FEET OF FIR IN LARGE PILES AND THEY WILL STILL BEND AND CHECK RELATIVE TO THE CONDITIONS.
Nice looking wood! Warping may be an issue with vertical.....worth a shot though!!

Just a thought . If you sticker top and bottom and make them tight with last sticker then you'll have less chance of the boards twisting . Just a thought.
I think you will end with warped wood. i had a shovel handle leaned up on a wall .it bent over 8 " off center . i could be wrong .
You might try adding some ventilation to circulate the air and remove moisture as the wood dries out if you end up with mold people will not want to buy it.

I've bought rough cut stored vertical. Ever piece had a bow and or twist. In my case milled to 1/2 for trim so it was a good deal. Was discounted heavily because of condition and I could take out the bends when I fastened them. Since then I made horizontal shelves for myself but I don't store nearly as much as you've got. Hope your system works for your wood and climate. My experience was tropical woods like koa and mahogany

I am very familiar with the vertical system at lumber yards that sold retail. With the big box stores the system has given way to fork lifts and horizontal arrangements. As the older retail outlets go away the less I've seen them. As usual there are arguments on both sides. I store my lumber in the garage horizontally above the car and head height. In the workshop they're stored vertically. Not sure how it will effect drying lumber - depends on the wood and moisture content.

A curious question do you have an outlet for the pieces you cut off, I mean do you sell it, give it away, I would think there is a market for it.

I have only cut 3 Ash logs with my new mill so I don't know much but with hardwoods it seems everyone puts weight on the piles to keep the boards flat. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.
I'm no sawyer but i think your going find a lot warping as the dry !

Jason: I think you need to add some air exchange with the atmosphere outside for the room you have that wood in. I know for sure that once the air in the room gains some water vapor from the boards drying, any further drying is going to stop or at least slow way down. Either forced with a fan or natural ventilation, but you need to let moist air out and dry air in. Similarly, if you really want to speed up drying of lumber in the room, some air movement inside the room is the best way to speed that up. As others have said horizontal with weights helps with twisting and bowing. If you want to save space and dry the wood vertical, clamp it in place with the clamps at the same height as the sticker rows. A bottom row of stickers would be very useful there.

They will warp that way.

I notice some have commented about the boards possibly warping which seems like a possibility. I am interested to see how this turns out.
