Could you make one of these videos for a 4-2 rotation? I have a younger group of girls that I think it would be better for to prepare for a 6-2 or a 5-1.
Daughter is outside hitter usually starts front left. I didn’t see in this video I don’t think. But there is a time when she’s in the middle front and the coach slides her back middle row. When would that be? During serve/receive? Then sometimes when she’s front right the setter pulls her outside but still in front of her and then when the ball is hit, my daughter has to run front outside left. Can’t figure out though when she does this. During service or defense or serve receive?
So her rotation starts like this. She comes in the game front left. Sometimes on the net. Sometimes drops back to 5 then runs up and ready for attack. Then she moves to front middle. Sometimes runs back to the left and sometimes moves straight back to cover middle. Then rotates front right up tight against a girl then hurries to front left on contact. Then rotated back to serve. After she serves. She’s supposed to run to back row far left. Trying to learn what her team is running. But sometimes I get confused.
For less confusion, it could just be two setters and you could have a setter in front row and back row. When the front row setter rotates to back row you'd have the back row bcomeling the front setter
Thanks to Haikyuu, I got a huge interest in Volleyball as well as it's positioning and detailed explanation about Serves, spikes, Block (Kill And Soft), setter, and also Libero can set the ball to the spiker/setter to smash the ball but he has to jump before the middle line, otherwise it'll be illegal... To be honest, I really had no idea until I watched Haikyuu as well as Play the game in College!!! Also, great explanation from your side about rotations!!! Keep up the great work... 👍😊
if the setter doesn't pass then how is the lineup set up after a service? The setter is almost hidden from the first service but if a rally continues then how do you continue to hide the setter so the setter can set instead of passing?
2 hours later of rewatching these stupid videos trying to figure out where setter goes, (i still have to figure out the other plays too) im getting it then i have a big brain fart and have to restart.
You will get it with time!! It takes time to learn but then it will become natural. Also once you practice it in real life, that will really help solidify it a lot more!
Thank you so much for this VERY informative video. I’m finally going to be able to understand and help teach my daughter where her placement is supposed to be!
I am going to play my first volleyball game on Sunday! I wonder if OH1 and OH2 have same rotation? Cause when OH1 comes to the back line he/she will become like OH2 and take OH2's base position right?
Hey, I just wanted to say that this is such an amazing video and it cleared up a lot of my doubts! I really love the animation as it helps me to clearly visualize! However I do have one question.. at 17:29 you have the outside hitter serving in serve rotation 1, shouldn’t the setter be serving?

If we serve, as soon as the ball goes over the net we go to base positions but if the ball comes back do we go into rotation 2? What happens when we have finished all 3 rotations?
Why in the initial setup is the OH1 on the right hand side instead of just setting it up from the beginning to be OH -- MB -- RS? Does that mess up another rotation later on?
Exactly, if the OH1 starts directly in front of OH2 then later on you'll have two rotations with no OH in the front row. Same goes for the other positions.
Obviously you'd change the back row as well to match - but in the rotation displayed right at the start of the video there is no position where the front row doesn't have to move to get into their positions. (To be even clearer; why isn't the first rotation: OH-MB-RS S-MB-OH Or if you want the setter to start in position 1: RS-OH-MB MB-OH-S)? In that rotation 1 out of 3 times the front row is already in position whether serving or receiving and doesn't have to move mid-play to get into their hitting spots
What do you do if the spike comes to the setter in base positions? do the RS have to make the set or is it the job of the MB to cover for the setter in base positions?
Great video Doc! I just wanted to clarify something - if the setter in the back row is the one who sets for that play, does this mean the setter can never dump?
Your video demonstration is great! However, I am confused in serve receive rotation 2...I thought the players are required to stay in their rotation positions (RS in middle and MB on the right) until the ball goes over the net? You have the MB move to the center and RS to the right as soon as the ball goes over the net? Can you please confirm? Thanks.
Andy Koski thanks for the nice comment and for your question! It is a very good question. You are correct that the MB must stay in front right and the RS must stay in front middle. However, as soon as the ball is contacted, players are free to move anywhere on the court. In order to get the MB and RS hitting in their ideal positions right away, the MB swings over to the middle as soon as the other team serves the ball (aka, as soon as the ball is contacted). This allows the MB to hit in their specialized middle position on the very first play, rather than having them hit in the right front on the first play (which they would be less experienced at). Let me know if this helped or if you have any other questions and thank you! :)
I'm a middle school coach and this helped sooooo much! Thank you for making this video so I don't have to turn to my 13yr old daughter who knows everything about volleyball.....:)
Can somebody help me I have a tournament tomorrow and I was just wondering. If I’m playing left and we rotate (so now I’m in middle) would I still be playing left(hitting from left) or would I switch with someone to get to left position so I can hit?
Thanks for doing this! Maybe I am just slow or I need to watch the video more than once.. I am trying to help my daughter understand rotations but it is not clear to me yet…. When you switch and get back to base positions when do you get back to the position where you left off to rotate when winning a point???
Your presentation is really good but your information is a little out- of- date. Since liberos generally go in for the middles in the back row, they have what you call the middle (in the back row) play left-back on defense. Hence what you call the outside hitter (in the back row) plays center-back on defense in most current defensive systems. Additionally, if the setter takes the first hit, the libero takes the second ball to set. You may want to consider making an updated video noting that the libero generally goes in for the middle in the back row (and a defensive specialist would go in for an outside hitter in the back row ,thus distinguishing the difference between the role of a libero and the role of a DS). I only bring this up because you do such an excellent job of illustration the roles!
First, very well done video. Nicely explained and helpful animations. Question on serve receive 1 though. Why pull the OH1 back to hide the setter? That’s a long way for the setter to go. Why not push the setter up to the front (just behind the OH1) so he’s closer to the 2.5 position? Back row players can just slide to the right to cover the holes and the front row middle blocker can drop back and to the left and stand just the the right of the opposite side hitter (who should be basically just inside the left sideline)?
Idk if might have missed it but did this actually show when the setter would take the hit and the backup has to take the hands? Unless you are still in heavily organized play for college, or professional/international, most normal leagues you play will have hitters that usually aim corner are hard cross which most likely will end up near the setter. So unless you are coming back to block he/she from touching the ball at all there is a high possibility the other team will aim for your setter so they don't get a chance to set the ball. So their outside might aim line and their right side will aim cross. Obviously this all changes with power hitters and Olympic style, I don't think anyone will question that.
In a 5-1, there is one setter and five hitters at all times. In a 6-2, you have two setters and six hitters, because your setters are back row players. There is also a 4-2, but that's more for a beginning team.
Liberos are allowed to serve in the US, but not internationally. Just replace the libero serving instead with the middle serving to make it correct, hope that clears things up!
can the starting right side serve or do they get subbed out for setter2?

If we serve, as soon as the ball goes over the net we go to base positions but if the ball comes back do we go into rotation 2? What happens when we have finished all 3 rotations?
No, you just keep playing from base positions until the play is over! You only change your rotation when the serving team changes

RS-OH-MB
MB-OH-S)?
In that rotation 1 out of 3 times the front row is already in position whether serving or receiving and doesn't have to move mid-play to get into their hitting spots
@@viperion_nz I believe it is to limit the MB to be in service reception, and instead use the OH:s there as much as possible.
What do you do if the spike comes to the setter in base positions? do the RS have to make the set or is it the job of the MB to cover for the setter in base positions?
Yes! Generally if the setter is forced to pass, then the RS becomes the temporary setter for that play.

Well not exactly. If the setter is up at the net, then yes….. but they can’t jump it it will be a “back row” attac
wait so does the setter play defense in the backrow after the first set...?
I'm a middle school coach and this helped sooooo much! Thank you for making this video so I don't have to turn to my 13yr old daughter who knows everything about volleyball.....:)
16:15 Is the short explanation if anyone needs it
Can somebody help me I have a tournament tomorrow and I was just wondering. If I’m playing left and we rotate (so now I’m in middle) would I still be playing left(hitting from left) or would I switch with someone to get to left position so I can hit?
Thank you so much you have NO IDEA how much I was struggling 😅 This video is really helpful!
Can the original setter on Serve Rotation 3 set still?
is the middle blocker in the back row considered the ds or liberio?
viv yes! Just think of it as middle back instead
Middle back is libero
Thank you so much! Please do more formation videos!
So when the opposing team is serving, do we have to get back in rotation, or can we start in the base positions?
Back in rotation!
Thanks for doing this! Maybe I am just slow or I need to watch the video more than once.. I am trying to help my daughter understand rotations but it is not clear to me yet…. When you switch and get back to base positions when do you get back to the position where you left off to rotate when winning a point???
Yep that is correct!
I got subbed out of my game today because they 8th graders have is doing this and I had no clue where I was going thank you so much
Thanks for watching!!
I love this video. It has been very helpful.
Such a clean and well explained video. Thanks🙏
doesnt the backrow oh play 6 as his base? and libero is 5. bc im the libero i always play at 5
Yes you can switch those two positions! I mention it briefly in my 5-1 rotation video
Thanks for the video. Good explanation. I have a short question. In defense who takes the short balls? The MB2?
I’m confused. What about middle hitter and libero and ds and stuff pls explain lol
Middle blocker Is also middle hitter and the back row middle blocker/hitter is the libero
what about the libero
Me: getting ready to receive a serve from the other team
Also me: can’t see because of a tall girl in front of my view
Oh my god yes 😭 in my head I'm like "shit I can't see. Hopefully I make it." I try to just look from the side of them but it never works. 😂
THANK YOU THIS WAS SO SO HELPFUL
The middle blocker plays in zone 5 at the back row always not in zone 6.
I was also thinking, is it okay to push the setter forward and bring the right side back row to pass?
Good question! That's definitely an option. I'd say utilize your strongest passers and adjust accordingly.
Tbh the coach can always adjust, for us the libero and oh shift over when setter is done with the serve. Or the setter goes to the middle instead...
Obviously this all changes with power hitters and Olympic style, I don't think anyone will question that.
can you make a guide for playing a 4-2 rotation pls.
what's the difference between 6-2 and the 5-1 volleyball rotation?
In a 5-1, there is one setter and five hitters at all times. In a 6-2, you have two setters and six hitters, because your setters are back row players. There is also a 4-2, but that's more for a beginning team.
Why is right side hitter on the left?
Is this available in pdf?
