For those wondering about that 7 hour delay on the tarmac, the EU has a law that says any flight that is delayed after 4hrs (I believe that's correct) must be cancelled and the passengers must be refunded or moved onto another flight for free. We obviously need a law like that here in the states.

We usually fly Delta and never had a terrible experience until flying out of NYC. We didn't know, but apparently both NYC airports are notorious for canceling flights for no reason. That happened to us last week. You're right, the American airline industry has been in decline since well, January 2021. We've flown to Europe a couple times during then and we haven't had any problems there.
As someone who works in an airline call center its always an infuriating thing to learn when UA decides to cancel their flight and leave it for the partner airlines to fix their problem. I swear to God we always feel sorry for the passengers, but since the ticket belongs to UA, they will have to fix their problems. And note you can always get a full refund if the airline cancels your flight.
@@ruffusgoodman4137 you must be associated with airline travel? then why is the United States experiencing such issues when other countries clearly are not to such a degree?
That is true also. I can't believe how rude and entitled passengers are. Yes, the airlines are definitely to blame for some things but it's the other passengers. That drive me more insane.
Stuff like this is why I drive when I wanna go somewhere. The cost of gas is less than an airline ticket, you end up spending more time in the airport than you do in the car, and you can control when you stop, go to the bathroom and don't have to put up with annoying passengers.
Canceled flights, and delayed flights are one thing, but that sitting on the tarmac thing to me as one of the most important things that needs to change. Mostly because it is a health issue and can lead to very severe problems. If you're more than a half hour delayed, put the plane back at the gate and at least let people get off and have access to food and water and able to stretch their legs.
The two most common causes of off the gate delays are weather and ATC traffic overload. The airlines have zero control over both, and can only wait it out for their turn in line. The solutions are to control the weather by moving thunderstorms away from the airways and to create more airspace over the country to accommodate more planes...you can do that, can't you? In addition, expand current airports to have a minimum of 3 runways that are each a mile apart from each other to allow for simultaneous operations and with "end run" taxiways that avoid crossing one runway to get to another. Too much you say? Don't want to destroy whole swaths of NYC and NJ to expand LGA and EWR? Too bad, enjoy the delays then.
I had a flight canceled in Paris. They rebooked my flight for the next morning on another airline. They gave us 2 food vouchers, a toiletry bag, a large shirt to sleep in, and booked us hotel rooms a Paris Disney. Same thing happened in the US. While, they did rebook my flight, the only thing they provided was pizza. No hotel, no food vouchers, no flight credit for the more than 20 hours I was stuck at the airport.
I started flying for work in the mid 90’s, i was on a flight about a dozen time a year, long and short flights. After 2001 the flying experience started to get worst and worst every year and specially on any American companies so it’s not a recent thing.
I was in Atlanta this past weekend. Their plane train (the one that takes you from one end of the giant airport to the other) was broken. We had to run from concourse to concourse. When I complained to my airline’s customer service rep (after missing the first flight) he looked and me and asked “what do you want me to do?”
Air travel in the us is such a pain to get through. Cancelling flights isn’t the only thing to worry about, my family nearly missed our connecting flight home because we were stuck in customs for nearly 4 hours. They only had 1 station open out of 11 and were shoving over 50 people into 1 big line that was moving at a snails pace. The airport experience in other countries is so much smoother.
Don’t forget the connecting flights that either force you to live at the airport for more than 5 hours between flights or they make you run over the top of people to make you 30-45 minute connection. Why can’t we have more straight thru flights?
Unfortunately, our airspace system is so overloaded that we get what's called EDCT Times. Essentially, the destination airports are often so busy that they give specific times for aircraft to arrive which means a delayed departure out of wherever you're coming from. I've been given an EDCT time that delayed our departure 3 hours which means we were going to exceed our maximum 14 hour duty day. Luckily we were able to get a new crew to do the trip so it wasn't cancelled. It isn't the flight crew's fault, ground handlers or baggage handlers. It's an FAA/Airspace problem and the airlines inability at handling the issues and the pilot shortage snowballs the problem.
@@arlenefisher1164 Unfortunately, it's a catch 22. Sometimes those departure times can be moved up but in order to take the earlier departure, the plane has to be ready to go in order to accept. Also, if the aircraft is unable to get off the ground within 5 minutes on either side of the time given (which those delays can be related to the departure airport), then there will be another delay and a later departure time given. I fly in the corporate/charter side so I can't say exactly what the airlines policy is. This is just through the experience and knowledge of the regulations I have. Regardless, the system is overtaxed and understaffed.
@@arlenefisher1164 The gate is needed for another flight. Sorry, but gates are like tables are restaurants or hospital beds - if the current occupant is not moving, they need to be removed so someone else can use it. Unless you want airports with hundreds of gates.
I can’t imagine the trauma those people went through trapped on that tin can in those horrible seats for 7 hours. I decided to do my fall trip within driving distance this year and it was the best decision. We all need to strike and hurt airline sales before they will do anything about this.
So the reason they had to stay on the plane was safety reasons. Potentially, someone could get on the plane with a bomb in a bag then stow it then walk off and they would walk away. That’s the reason why they have that rule. That’s also the reason why the hound of reporting unaccompanied bags for that same reason
I find it crazy how the airlines act like nothing happened after delaying so many flights for so long now. Hopefully we become like the rest of the world and dont have delays lol
Hello, Mcfly, hello? They fired all the pilots and staff that wouldn't take the jab. Some part of these delays were bound to happen and that's not even counting all other factors. Hard to believe the rest of the world is fine and dandy, but if true, then there are even more problems to work on.
@@remyllebeau77Yet the airlines lobbying congress for $54 billion in bailout funds since 2020 alone despite objectively unsustainable buisiness practices, consistently declining service quality and virtually zero binding terms or culpability for all that funding. My United flight got delayed and I missed my connection due to an emergency landing. When we landed I got a canned email from the CEO saying how it’s best to start with a heartfelt apology. They provided a link for me to get my compensation. My certificate was for $0. As a consumer I have never felt so supported before. Their heartfelt apology was so touching.
The whole staying in the aircraft thing is more than likely a FAA thing, as in Canada we don't have a policy like that in CARs. If there is an aircraft malfunction passengers are deboarded and compensated, if possible another plane within the same company is cleared for the flight depending on where the malfunction occured. It is insane to think this happened, especially thinking as a pilot and an aircraft maintenance student in Canada.

travel actually sucks rn. over the summer i did a precollege program in dc and i was one of the few people in the entire 100+ person program who’s flight was not canceled due to “air traffic control” issues. my older brother who was 17 was literally stuck alone in new york city for three days with no clothes because of it. airlines are also getting real sleazy with trying to make u pay for their mistakes. my grandma’s qantas flight was canceled and she had had a premium economy ticket because of her back issues. they then rebooked her as regular economy for her flight and then when she told them she needed premium economy for her back they made her pay 1000 more dollars. when my mom found out about this she was outraged and she is a lawyer so she threatened the airline citing a bunch of laws about how they can’t just cancel a flight and then charge a passenger 1000 dollars extra for her original seat. they ended up refunding the 1000 dollars
I haven’t flown since they started putting in the 9/11 protocols. Yea just what I want for you to throw away my perfume and nail file so when the terrorist hijacks the plane with a box cutter I have literally nothing to defend myself. TSA stops people for dildos in their bags but people have gotten through with guns and knives. It’s all a joke and we are just being inconvenienced for no good reason.
Flying from Southwest, Florida on Southwest air to Chicago delayed seven hours finally arrived and waited 4 1/2 hours for our luggage to arrive after landing. We were told it was because of a “shift change“. No compensation.
Went through something like this with JetBlue this summer. What was supposed to be an hour layover turning into a 14 hour overnight layover. Wasn’t until hour eight that they revealed it was because they had no pilot to fly our plane from JFK to Nashville… I literally could have just driven home from New York in less time than what I waited for that flight

The flight attendants were amazing; we got drinks, were allowed to walk around for short bits, and were given a small refund for that trip, and on top of that we were given free tickets for another flight to use within the year! How sad that now they don’t seem to care about passengers…
My last flight was on Hawaiian Airlines in May of 2022. I drove from Kingman Arizona to Los Angeles to get a non-stop flight and everything was nearly flawless. The only problem was the long trek from ticketing/security to the gate - a 30 minute +/-walk for my wife and myself (71 and 67 at the time and she has a questionable knee). Not really comparable to most experiences here, but I have to say that the first thing is to try for non-stop flights where possible, then direct flights with no change of plane. I do believe the larger problem is insufficient maintenance of aircraft. I suspect, although I haven’t researched it, that there is a shortage of trained maintenance personnel. Add that to an aging fleet - I saw a Jen Brooks video the other day flying on American, Delta, and United and at least one of the planes was over 30 years old (actually, my recollection is something like 42 or 44 years, but I’m not totally sure). It’s time to improve the maintenance of our air fleet and update that same fleet.
How do people have such horrific experiences? I've flown about 175 flights this year within the US and I think I've had 2 cancelations and 2 delays that were more than 3 hours. United's internal ground stop was in effect for about 30 minutes. It was their flight dispatching system which is illegal for them to depart more flights if it is down. Not near the only one, and the best option is what they did. Far more delays or ground stops daily due to the federal government and FAA Air Traffic Control.

They don’t profit in the billions. That’s just they’re gross income. At most they profit 1 billion which sounds like a lot. It really isn’t because that can be lost in a single do to some unexpected event
You know their financial statements are public, right? You can look up the actual numbers instead of just inventing something. An exclamation point is not a substitute for reality. United Airlines made $739 million in 2022, after losing $1.962 billion in 2021 and over $7 billion in 2020. American Airlines made only $127 million in 2022 after losing $1.993 billion in 2021. Delta was the winner of the three at $1.318 billion in 2022 and positive $280 million in 2021, but lost the most at $12.385 billion in 2020. This is not a business that's making piles of easy cash. If you think it is, feel free to go buy their stock. American Airlines is only thirteen dollars a share.
I'm old enough to remember when the airline industry was regulated. Deregulation of the industry screwed it all up. When you bought a ticket, no hidden fess and they were even required to provide meals (based on flight duration), not just snacks.

There was an airline like that, called Virgin America, founded on behalf of Sir Richard Branson (since he's a foreigner, he couldn't do anything other than hold stock and appear for PR purposes).
How sickening - these airlines need accountability…
Accountability? With this administration? You must be new here....
They have. It's called ICAO, look it up.
They must be paying off FAA officials to escape accountability.
@@ruffusgoodman4137 you must be associated with airline travel? then why is the United States experiencing such issues when other countries clearly are not to such a degree?

To be fair, the decline in quality of passengers is contemporaneous with the decline in airline quality.

No yeah I’ll just casually jump in my car and drive across the Atlantic from the US to Portugal. No biggie
@@midnighttheumbreon8857 I was mainly refering to traveling around the country genius. Obviously I didn't mean when you got to other continents.
AMEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
All of this make me remember when the song "United brakes guitars" went viral, good times
Thank you for not showing us the mess. I appreciate it.
I was in Atlanta this past weekend. Their plane train (the one that takes you from one end of the giant airport to the other) was broken. We had to run from concourse to concourse. When I complained to my airline’s customer service rep (after missing the first flight) he looked and me and asked “what do you want me to do?”
What was your answer?
What a good guy, going and getting the waters, and passing them out for the people on the plane
Then get the passengers off the plane until it can leave.

Liked. budlight effect coz they on their powertrip
So the reason they had to stay on the plane was safety reasons. Potentially, someone could get on the plane with a bomb in a bag then stow it then walk off and they would walk away. That’s the reason why they have that rule. That’s also the reason why the hound of reporting unaccompanied bags for that same reason
In the uk air traffic control had a glitch and every flight was candles for next 3 days and we had to pay for new flights

They provided a link for me to get my compensation. My certificate was for $0. As a consumer I have never felt so supported before. Their heartfelt apology was so touching.
So they should continue flying plane risking the lives of everyone on board for your connection flight. Entitled
I never got compensated, but that was decades ago, so the rules may have changed.

My one and only experience flying an American company was this April with AA into JFK. travel actually sucks rn. over the summer i did a precollege program in dc and i was one of the few people in the entire 100+ person program who’s flight was not canceled due to “air traffic control” issues. my older brother who was 17 was literally stuck alone in new york city for three days with no clothes because of it. airlines are also getting real sleazy with trying to make u pay for their mistakes. my grandma’s qantas flight was canceled and she had had a premium economy ticket because of her back issues. they then rebooked her as regular economy for her flight and then when she told them she needed premium economy for her back they made her pay 1000 more dollars. when my mom found out about this she was outraged and she is a lawyer so she threatened the airline citing a bunch of laws about how they can’t just cancel a flight and then charge a passenger 1000 dollars extra for her original seat. they ended up refunding the 1000 dollars
Our airlines are such a damn mess, but not sure what people expected when butt loads of people were fired for not getting the jabby.

How sad that now they don’t seem to care about passengers…
Brett is turning out to be a first class investigative reporter. She has a long career ahead outside daily wire if she goes that route.
This will probably be a weekly video topic. ❤

I'm old enough to remember when the airline industry was regulated. Deregulation of the industry screwed it all up. When you bought a ticket, no hidden fess and they were even required to provide meals (based on flight duration), not just snacks.
