PS4 got the update around January, and all other versions launched with it. Or at least, had it patched later because they broke it again in a weird way before updates.

First minute describes my childhood as well. NES/SNES gaming for years until receiving PC, then discovering emulation and seeking out the games that I missed out but saw upon gaming magazines/talked by friends. I don't think there's anything that can replace same gaming experience I had with Konami's NES titles back then.
I was very lucky with the setup for renting games I had. Three games per week, every week alone is more than I could ever ask for. But the owner of the rental place knew her videogames too. She's actually who pushed me towards stuff like Alundra, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. At the very least, some of the lesser known systems are easy to emulate and still have massive libraries full of cool stuff nobody talks about anymore. It's not the same, but it still lets you discover games kinda like that.
Good night, gentlemans! I had access to PC since 1993, yet was blessed with my own only in 1999. And PC almost eradicates all the console gaming from my life. Still, when first emulators came out, the first thing I have done, was collecting am many ROMs as I could and finish all the unresolved childhoods geschtalts. Even now I have one of the first Thrustmasters gamepads with double connectors USB + PS1 and it is still working! And when RUclips came out with first gamer-made content like AVGN, oh my, I blessed all the Gods, I had chosen to reincarnate in such a marvelous time bracket. To witness the golden era of rising of video-games, to see how genres were forming, flourish and sadly decayed....ah, so many stories, so few time on hands....
As someone who grew up in the SNES era of JRPGs I became more and more alienated and disappointed by the current state of the gaming industry after the PS2 era. And then suddenly a little Falcom game (Trails in the Sky) came around and made me remember this unconditional trust and love I had towards a game developer in my childhood. Since then I've played every Falcom game available in English. I can't stress out enough how Falcom to me are now what Square used to be in their Golden Age. Thanks to Falcom I see the current gaming industry in a much more positive light and Ys VIII is definitely another masterpiece of this small 50 employee development studio.
Well, here I am... having recently played through the PC version which was fixed earlier this year. And I thought NISA's reteanslation was pretty good. Maybe you should revisit this game.
Weird that you mention the dialogue getting updated every time the story advances as if it's new here, when that aspect was present in the Ys I and II remakes as well as in Ys VI and, if I recall, Oath of Felghana as well. That's just Falcom being Falcom, really. I remember really digging it in Ys VI.
Just finished ,the first ys game that i have played and it was a great experience ,my favorite character besides adol was hummel because i loved the way he fought ,now i ordered ys origin for ps4 and downloaded ys vi for pc
Am I alone in preferring the Oath in Felghana/Ark of Napishtim gameplay style over the newer one from Celceta onwards? All of 'em are legitimately great, but I wonder if I'm in as much of a minority as I'm assuming.
Coming in here 4 years after this review came out is wild. Not only was the localization fixed beyond what anyone expected with most of the voice acting being redone even. The PC port coming out and being bad. Then IT getting fixed. Experimental co-op added to it and more. There's never been a better time to try Ys VIII. I've played it before and after the localization was fixed and it's definitely worth a play
There's one thing I'm still trying to wrap my head around. Did NISA mistranslate it or are the ruins actually millions of years old and somehow still standing.
This is based on the ending, so if anyone hasn't played this game yet and is reading comments, keep scrolling. I think the ruins only exist due to the magic from Dana's prayers. Thought it likely also has to do with the Lacrimosa itself. Since when Dana's existence is removed from Adol's reality by the gods, the ruins stop existing along with her. I don't know if it gets translated better in the original text, but I doubt it since they didn't change anything major.
well considering falcom put enough detail into eternia that the houses were made to accommodate the height difference, them not being their in the end sounds about right. Or it could be that without Dana there the meteor's obliterated any trace of them.
Crossing my fingers that Ys IX will be localized by XSEED or some other better localization company. The game is really damn good from what I played so far and it should be an actual crime that this was given a half assed translation on launch.
@@Aboveup Really? Well that's really disappointing to hear with that being the case. I guess that brings to question what company or group would be better with localizing that game then? EDIT: Oh yeah I might ask also where the first instance of them shitting the bed. Was it in one of the Kiseki games like Cold Steel? EDIT 2: Okay I think I see why it all is now. I think I'll just hope Falcom finds a good group of people that will keep the integrity of the game instead of... Literally looking at all the things XSEED done within the span of a year
Huh, this got flagged as spam by YT, so I only just now saw it. And, yeah. Xseed kinda became a mess. The last big things I heard from them was that they were going to publish an old Wizardry game on PC, and both GOG and Steam rejected it due to licensing issues. Shortly after that, the staff listing removal thing happened. From what I've gathered, a large pool of the staff that localized Kiseki under Xseed is now doing it under NISA, and they're likely to keep the rights to Falcom stuff. In the meantime, the last Kiseki game was playable in English at E3, and was met with positive response. Despite that, they're delaying the game anyway to ensure it comes out just right. So maybe they really are turning it around. I've heard a few things from people with a direct line to staffers that apparently NISA is deathly afraid of another mess like they had on their hands with this game, because right now Falcom is all they really have going for them in terms of big brands now that NIS is financially struggling and Danganronpa over. If they do actually pull through and deliver quality, then I'm fine with them retaining rights to be honest. As long as it's just... Done well.
@@Aboveup I guess it will be interesting to see if NISA does heel turn after this but yeah it really sounds like XSEED is just done now. Oh well, hopefully the people they laid off are getting stuff done in a good environment and hoping that if NISA does get to translate Ys IX then it will be a much better translation treatment compared to Ys VIII.
This was my first Ys game and it was all thanks to the awful translation making headlines that I even thought to play the demo. Sometimes mistakes turn into miracles.

just adding something since the pc release has been released: the pc port is broken for most people, and even with all the delays to release the game, NISA simply released a broken game. Unfortunately, this just brings bad reputation to falcom (because, from what I see, ys 8 is a great game, but i can't play other than on pc, and I don't wish to pay for a broken product that has a bad translation)
The current planned translation update is early 2018, alongside the PC release. No concrete date yet. I'm worried about it though, the person put in charge did Danganronpa and Disgaea translations and those tend to change characterization and dialogue fairly heavily. I'd rather take a clunky literal translation over that, but that's just me.

The only Ys games I've played are Felghana and Seven which I can say are amazing. However, I do have all of the other YS games on my PC. Having finished the Liberl Trilogy of Trails, playing Ys feels...fun.
Yeah, I played the first before SC came out, so I kinda fell of the boat after getting into other stuff over time. I really do need to come back to it.
My favorite three games on my Switch are The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild, The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, and Ys Viii Lacrimosa of Dana. Before someone tries either Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first play Ys Viii it is a much better game.

@@Aboveup I played YS s eries way before it localize in the west. Aside from the super old SFC era, my first YS is the YS series used to be featured on pc launch which is the ys 1 and 2 remake since 1998, and my country always has it localized early on. I played ys 7 back when it's 2012 Vita period so I don't have prejudgement of combat system compare to 2017 standard which is ys8. (YS7 is the first time they make transition toward this system too , what do you expect?) I picked up YS 8 quite abit later because it came to Switch really late, and I have been busy with real life stuff. But ultimately I catched up to YS8 ofc, as of the comment about 2020 part. My point is your earlier review basically just compare ys 7 directly to ys8, criticizing everything about ys 7 being way worse than ys8, which is true because ys 7 is a foundation laid for ys8 to be improved upon, with better engine, better system, and better combat. However you shouldn't use YS8 as mean to put down ys7 entirely. Every game has a transition period, and this is the first time YS7 go on 3D and adapt a whole new layer of system. YS8 clearly improve everything upon it. You're like comparing the old Pokemon R/B/G to the newer Pokemon remake of Pokemon Fire-red and then criticizing the super old series being really bad in all their systems. All I can say is ys8 being your very first ys kinda ruin other ys for you.
You neither watched the video or played the old games and are kinda exposing yourself with a lot of untrue statements here. Thank you for your time. Keep trying to look like people agree with you by upvoting yourself too. It's something smart people do for sure. If you want an example of you trying to make things up, Ys 1 got localized in the west back 1990. Multiple times. As did Ys 3 in the early 90s. These aren't SNES games, they're 8bit PC games. If you played them before they got localized in the west, you played them before the series existed. You don't have to make things up to sound smart. You could just accept that you like different things instead attempting to smear and invalidate opinions you dislike as if you're a child. That is what I take issue with. Ark of Napishtim was that engine's transition period and it fared much better in that regard. It stood its ground on its own. There is no real SFC era for this series. There's bad ports of 8 bit games there. Ys 8 was my fourth Ys game. By the time I made the Ys 7 video, I had played *every entry* in the series and it very easily is one of the worst in the series by a very large margin. 8 is the only one that compares to it, and it fails that comparison.
My first Ys game and button mapping is horrible for me so glad I am able to remap all buttons was a god send really loving it so far just got to chapter 3
Well, Ys 8 is out in steam, and it has bad reviews like 6/10 as of now, perfomance problems, crashes every now and then, music problems (watch "Ys 8 and it's terrible PC port" to now more about that) and some reviews in japanese that i can't read unfortunately, and is bad when Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (game that runs on the same engine as Ys 8 and was released a year before lacrimosa of dana) scores 9/10 in steam, runs well even in weaker hardware and no crashes, at least, not that i know of, so what happened?. I hope that XSEED or even Aksys be the ones bringing Nihon Falcom games here and not NIS America.
Aboveup my thoughts exactly, it feels confusing that a Falcom game in PC doesn't work as it should, especially considering that they used to release their games mainly in computers (with Ys 5 being the exception), with the 7th game, nope, just portable consoles like PSP and PS Vita.
THERE IS A WEAKNESS SYSTEM?! Bro I'm actually almost done with this game now, it's my first Ys game ever and I love it so much even tho the plot seems to have been written on crack... which I still don't mind for some reason cuz I love most of the characters .....I feel like I would have had less suffering and running if I had known about the weakness system... I do switch characters often tho, even though I sort of have trouble playing as Sahad and Ricotta... and Iclusian Dana........
Never played a Ys game but I was curious after reading how well it got reviewed. But going from this video I’m still not really sold. Seeing you attack enemies that give little to no reaction when taking damage just looks so unsatisfying, kinda like the sort of combat you’d find in MMOs. I can’t really say much for it visually either whether it’s because it looks like an upscaled ps2 game or the uninspired character designs. But assuming what you say about the story and characters is true I still don’t see that as enough to claim it’s one of the best games of the year. Especially when Nier came out this year and completely blows this out the water in my opinion.
Maybe you'd feel differently if you didn't immediately come from a point of dimissal towards the series. You sound like you immediately want to dislike it no matter what you see or hear out of fanboyism for another game this year, one that is my actual game of the year, mind. It's especially odd when your criticisms of the game you didn't play are identical to the ones others tend to apply to Automata without having played it in order to dismiss it. It's possible for more than one great game to exist annually.
Aboveup I wasn’t dismissing the entire series my thoughts were on this game only. And you couldn’t be more wrong about me wanting to dislike it. I wanna like all games if possible but sadly not all of them are that great. Since I have a few Ys soundtracks I enjoy listening to I always thought at some point I wanna give this series a try and with this game being so well received I thought now would be a good time. But again looking at the gameplay for the first time it really hasn’t left much to be desired. I’ll still probably give it a try and hopefully I’m wrong about it playing like an MMO. Also I don’t recall anyone criticising Nier for its gameplay, especially when Platinum Games are known for their great gameplay. And of course it’s possible for multiple great games to come out annually only most great games don’t look bad in comparison to others.
I don't know how you play games but YS games in general should be played on the hardest difficulty from start to get the most out of the game. I'm talking combos, Dodge/Block patterns etc. If you play on that, you will get 2-3 shot by most enemies and you won't think about it being a cakewalk just breezing through the game. You need to be focused and especially during boss fights. Give it a shot if you want, I'm sure you'll love it :)
I wish they'd actually let the crappy pc port run above 60hz rather than Japanese devs tying so much to frame rate on so many games... Kh springs to mind also

I picked up YS 8 quite abit later because it came to Switch really late, and I have been busy with real life stuff.
This game is an amazing masterpiece. The translation problems are a drop in the bucket of its overall greatness.
I think its already been mentioned but a good while back they fixed the translation and its far better. The VAs even redid their lines where needed.
Renato Acevedo Xanadu Next was ported by people more competent than NISA.
Bro I'm actually almost done with this game now, it's my first Ys game ever and I love it so much even tho the plot seems to have been written on crack... which I still don't mind for some reason cuz I love most of the characters
.....I feel like I would have had less suffering and running if I had known about the weakness system...
IllestVillain21 in playing this on my vita it's so goddamn fun I love it
I don't know how you play games but YS games in general should be played on the hardest difficulty from start to get the most out of the game.
I have never ever ever even heard of this series ever. Thank you for explaining how to video game.
HEHEHEY
THE PC PORT SUCKS
AND NOBODY IS ABLE TO PLAY IT
why?
I wish they'd actually let the crappy pc port run above 60hz rather than Japanese devs tying so much to frame rate on so many games... Kh springs to mind also
Ys 8 fans: THere's a female protag! 11 out of 5!
Dubbing still not fixed 😒. Garbage game.
When you going to do Ys 9?
