  • The Kabar Becker BK9 Combat Bowie is the largest of the Ethan Becker designed BK series knives. the BK 9 features a 9" blade of 1095 steel and an ergonomic handle design. Let's see how well it does that "knife stuff". Oh and check the balance ;-) #kabar
The best price I found on the BK9 is at, you guessed it, Big Daddy Unlimited.

I've had mine for about 4 years now. Ive done lots of chopping and batoning and it has still kept it's sharp edge. I stippled the scales with a fine point wood burner and the grip is aggressive enough to get plenty of purchase.and no slip with sweaty hands. It's a great knife.

The bk9 was one of my first real knives when I got into the hobby. I love the look of it with the blade shape. Can’t beat becker handles. Just an absolute workhorse that’s so versatile and well designed. Glad you got your hands on one, Brian!

It seems so ironic that every time I start thinking about a knife and start seeing RUclips videos about it. I have thought about the BK9 for a while now. And now I might just have to pull the trigger. Thanks for the video

I have it for 5 years or so, abused it to hell.. one time it bent so far that it bowed in the log
      No problem.
I have many knives, many with better steel but this is my ‘fun’ knife
They are really cool to customize since there are so many after market things for it and the steel is relatively easy to cut/grind

wuup wuup wuup THUNK. I have two of these, have had since they came out; removed the coating on one and put a patina, looks beautiful; put micarta scales on both. Back before I had to retire for health issues, I had dozens of knives and swords but although I have given away almost everything else, these BK9s will be with me to the last.

I've always laughed at the "Combat Bowie" name, but have been a HUGE fan of the BK9 for many years. It's a very well balanced, excellent performing knife, with one of the most comfortable handles in a production knife. BTW, I actually love the BK7 even more as a do-all knife that's a little more reasonably sized.

I hate to have to modify a good knife but we do what we have to do to get the functionality we desire. Good one, Brian. You need to get with Really Big Monkey over there in GA and let him take you to Jones Mountain. Do a video of it.

I have several Bucks, TOPS, Barkies, and ESEEs. And, beyond the shadow of a doubt, there are no better "values" than Ethan's fixie offerings from Ka-Bar. Whether a BK-2, a BK-7, a BK-9, a BK-10, or a BK-16, you just can't go wrong. Ethan Becker's blades are all "go" and no "show". Mr. Becker gives you everything you need, and nothing you don't. And, if you absolutely need the "show" or "high speed" parts, there is plenty of room for aesthetic or scale improvement. Beyond that, the BK-9 is a "beast", and a true wilderness "survival" blade. It's as strong as a Class 6 truck, and bites like a rattlesnake. Great vid, as usual. Thanks. 👍

I own Sagebrush Customs, I do custom work on many kinds of knives. One of the most common jobs I get is removing the coating and forcing a patina on Becker and Esee knives. If you want to leave the coating, use 400 grot wet or dry paper and smooth the coating to where its smooth. I like to remove thumb rest and re shape the end from a "clip point" to a short drop point. Makes it a wonderful blade. I square the spine at the same time. Thnx for the heads up on this vid yest my friend!

    • @MichaelRozie
      @MichaelRozie 2 года назад

I just reground it to a very agressive bowie clip point, looks way better than the standard imo too.
I like the ramp but I can see why people remove it. If your thumb is too short, it would be useless metal.
I mirror polished mine but there are still pits in the steel.
I like the knife design but becker really makes sloppy blancs..
They should have made them way thicker and then grind the steel more or something
The black coating makes them cut corners.
Are Esee knives like that too when you strip them?

Just as an idea, if you want to use the spine for fero rods, just strip the coating from the section you wanna use to strike that way the rest of the knife keeps the coating. That’s if you wanna keep the black blade look if not strip the whole blade. I stripped of about an inch of the coating on the spine and it works great

I'm late to this party but just found this video. Regarding the rough coating, I didn't like it either, but hated to remove it, so I took some 600 grit sandpaper and sanded mine a bit and the coating is much smoother now. It would be nice if Ka-Bar would put a smooth coating on it to begin with like they do on some of their other knives.

Strip the coating and give it a small convex grind and it really shines. Alkso like that the handle is smooth and not to grippy, you will never get any blisters after hours of working with the knife. And the handle ergos is great, you will never loose it or slip. light and handy for it's size, chops like crasy and is just fine for smaller jobs too. I love it so much that i have bought two of them. Have the BK7,BK2,BK16 and two BK22 Kukris;-)) i must really like them..

If one must have a large knife and cannot obtain a vintage Marble’s Trailmaker knife the BK 9 is the way to go. I put custom handle scales by Tommy The Who on mine and it was a sweet knife. Ethan Becker designs the most comfortable handles ever put on a knife. But, I realized I had no need for a knife this large (my rifle and revolver hold more than 1 round and at 71 I will not going into combat on a regular basis) so I sold it. However, the Marbles Trailmaker with stag handle is just sexy to part with.

If you strip the epoxy coating off, try putting the blade in hot vinegar. It will patina it. I did my BK 7 like that and have used it in all kinds of weather and haven’t had any major rust issues plus it wears good.

I have several BK knives including the BK9. The sheath also has a pocket above where the BK13 tucks in that can carry a surprising amount of emergency gear, it is a very good sheath even though it's made in China. At least the knife is made in the U.S.A. The spine just below the gimping has been sharpened. I haven't taken the coating off yet but that day is coming. My largest Bowie is the SCHF45, it's a very good chopper but the BK9 is easier to carry on your belt.

Ha Ha , I also first discovered the Becker's because of Chris Tanner and bought my BK7 about 8 yrs ago and soon after my BK9 , that Crap about the handles being too slippery is a "RUclips" thing , I have XL hands and Never had a problem with them , although I do put Micarta scales on All my Becker's , it's Not because the scales are Too Slippery. The BK9 is a Fantastic Blade , it you don't have one , Buy One , and you'll soon discover why they call it the "King" ....👍🖖

I have had the BK9 for about 9 yrs. I have been a big fan of the performance despite the fact that she is a bit of an ugly duckling. Nowadays I give the Junglas more use, leave the coating .....it will smooth with use, however I do use the tennis racquet wrap on all of my big knives. I choose UST fire starters that have their own steel striker so the sharp spine thing is a non issue for me. Good and fair review Bryan.

It's definitely a decent blade, but would love to see you do a bk9/esee junglas comparison.

Great demo. Great knife but would have to buy a USA made sheath. I'd probably have one made from kydex

I love Sharp Saturday! You know, now you gotta get a BK7 and a BK2 (BK22). I think we would all love to see you do Review Videos on those, and then a Comparison of all three knives. I highly respect your views and would love your views on all three knives. As well as, if you only had to pick between one of these three knives to Survive, which one and why?

You definitely have to hit the spine with a file on beckers, but if you're actually prepared you have a file on your multi-tool that you can strike with or fix the spine issue with!!!

I have a BK7 and with a file n the spine mine strikes a ferro rod well now. I do keep a coat of mineral oil on it.

Before I forget, do you think you could do a review of the PKS Scorpion HD? I was thinking of getting a PKS knife and watching your review of the Mountain Lion convinced me to get one. Hopefully it arrives this week.

However it has been about a year or two. Ha Ha! I would be impressed if the same fuel still worked now. In fact i would go out and buy one. Stay safe Tom

I don’t know if I missed it or not. But what is the price of this one at the time of the video? That’s OK if it’s a little bit more now but I was just curious.
