Kalinga had a major influence on maritime trade in Southeast Asia. Kalinga played a key role in spreading Indian culture in Southeast Asia. The Bay of Bengal was known as Kalinga Sagar. At one time, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia were called by the name of Kalinga. The founders of the Champa (Vietnam), Dheevamari (Maldives) and Funan (Cambodia) kingdoms were from Kalinga. Arab historians have mentioned that the Shailendra dynasty of Indonesia originated in Kalinga, the whole of southeast Asia was part of the Shailendra Empire.
