I do want to say, Ghost Stories didn't actually flop. In fact, it was a *super* popular series at the time of it's dubbing, with a massive following in Japan. However, the issue it faced was that it's story was based around a bunch of Japanese myths and stories, and they were worried it wouldn't translate well over to American audiences. So, the team got together and decided to give it a new spin; granting the team total creative freedom with a very small list of rules: no names could be altered, the children would still follow the same general plot, and the ghost would always be defeated in the end, usually via chanting and a ritual. Beyond that - I might have forgotten a thing or two - the American dub team was giving absolute free reign. And they went on to make the most offensive, hilarious, over the top, first ever officially licensed Abridged series for the show, throwing it through the roof in popularity and earing awards for being the best dub two years in a row.

The irony is that the idea that it's 'pure fiction' is a myth. The Ghost Stories anime DID flop, it's why you never hear anything about it beyond this dub. It didn't flop SUPER hard, but still failed to gather enough attention that it never caught on culturally in Japan. Abridged series exist. Unless you lament that dubbing companies can't just take a random property and instead of giving it a proper dub, bastardize it by making voiceover that, while comical, has almost nothing to do with the original text.
The thing with the rumor about the show is "Flopped so hard" in japan actually isn't true. It's not the biggest among 90s anime, but it was still successful nonetheless. It's among the top 10 watched anime in japan at the time it aired, got official dub on many Asian countries, and the horror-book it was based on got a spike on their sales. ADV (The corporation one in charge of the American Dub) and it's director (Steven Foster) basically lied to everyone saying "The shows flopped in japan, so I asked the dub team to do whatever they want, and guess what? We made it successful here" because he just want to take credit, and at that time, nobody even bother to fact check. Years later, they received heavy backlash after it was found out by the Book author and Fuji TV (The one that hold the right for the anime) and they released a 'proper English dub' for the overseas viewer on Animax, but the damage already been done. Most western audience already thought that the show really bombed in JP and the Animax Dub is just there as an attempt to 'tone down' the series.

Just had an epiphany. Gay as an insult (kinda meant “lame”, iirc) got phased out, and now we use cringe instead. And now using gay as an insult is cringe. Weird.
Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything All About You was my MySpace song. It's the earliest song I remember hearing. Probably heard others before but as far back as my memory goes it's the earliest.
Little lesser known fact about this series, it in fact DID NOT flop in Japan, it actually was successful enough that they had a rerun. I'm sure the VAs having free reign is true, no idea where the rest of the story came from, maybe they didn't think it'd sell well in the west?
Ghost Stories is one of the best dubs ever. The shock humor is amazing, and I think the only other dub that took this "make things up as you go" approach to dubbing was Samurai Pizza Cats. It's just a shame that some of the people who did voices for this show later on became huge hypocrites, attacking other VAs for making similar jokes at cons and stuff (if you know, you know). It's even worse when you hear that apparently the VAs and writers would race each other to the recording building, and whoever got there first would get to decide what the ad-libbed lines would be, so clearly everyone was down for the edgy jokes till someone they didn't like said them. The american dubbing industry is so f-ed.
YES. YES! I recently got into this anime, and I loved the dub. And to see you reacting to it is a blessing. ....haveyouacceptedjesusasyourpersonalsavior?
i can't remember what song i had on auto-play but it was PROBABLY something by Alkaline Trio, Sigur Ros, Blink 182, Modest Mouse, or Neutral Milk Hotel. i do remember the background of my page was an infinite loop of McLusky lyrics. that's all i've got as the vid continues: man Helena was such a banger
In regards to the "gay as an insult" discussion, not that my opinion matters but I still got the right to throw it out there: Always found it hypocritical to make words off limits to being used in other unrelated ways. I mean, back when people did say "that's ret-r-d," they weren't talking about those people, just the same as no one intends to make fun of wheelchairs if they call something "lame."
The song that played on my Myspace waaay back in the day was an anime OST because I was a massive weeb back then. Was Treat and Goblins that opening for Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.
There was commercials telling people not to use gay as an insult? People still use it as an insult today, no one wants to be called gay. (unless you are gay). People even using "trans" as an insult now.
Ghost Stories is something that should be watched every year to test your sense of humor. If it no longer makes you laugh, it's time to stop. I still chuckle over half the time, which is why I still watch it.
The most amazing thing is recognizing all the voices from other things, often so much more wholesome characters, only to hear this shit said in their sweet voices LOL
Can't believe I didn't think of this during the stream but seeing this suddenly reminds me of the Phoenix Wright dub outtake vids. Nowhere as bad as this iirc but still hilarious.
So fun fact: It turns out the entire spiel about Ghost Stories flopping super hard so the owners just let ADV do whatever they wanted with it was made up. Basically Steven Foster, the director of the dub, has a history of doing whatever the fuck he wants with dubs, and he either lied about the reason he did the same with Ghost Stories, or there was a miscommunication so he just did what he usually does, and the internet did what the internet usually does and spread that lie/miscommunication around everywhere so that everyone believed it. Look up MercuryFalcon's "The Truth About the Ghost Stories Dub" if you want more info.
My roommates own multiple copies of this series. They sit on our movie shelves and mock me. That's okay, I have a locked glass display case full of autographed Neil Breen films.

ADV also did the "Lake Texarkana Dub" for "Gamera Vs. Legion."
Yeah that just sounds like bullshit to make them feel better that a man who rewrote it made it a better cult classic
29:05 Batfan94, here you go 🏆. “Cards against Humanity, the anime” was hilarious.
36:40 Alicia: "What song auto-played on your profile?"
Me: Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood (opening rap) "Finally, somebody let me out of my cage, now time for me is nothing cuz I'm countin' no age-" that rap.
I love the way you say “algorithm gwahds”. It’s actually one of the reason I’m a reoccurring watcher to your videos as well as your reactions of course.
Someone I chat wrote “card against humanity the anime” and I love it
Just had an epiphany. Gay as an insult (kinda meant “lame”, iirc) got phased out, and now we use cringe instead.
And now using gay as an insult is cringe. Weird.
they were given 100% full free reign on writing their own script and damn it did they nail it
Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything All About You was my MySpace song.
Just subbed to your Patreon, so I'll be watching there now😊 so nice to have full uncut vids!
Bro I never clicked on a RUclips notification so fast in my life
The my space talk just reminded me of a new one like "my space" called "space hey" and my song on that is called Good girl by Morganne.
This anime was original abridged anime, Stephen foster is the one scriptwriter you never give a blank slate he'll wild out
late to the show, but I'm sure you'll appreciate this.
In Scotland growing up, one of the most cutting insults was "yer da sells avon"
Yeh.
Lmao im so glad my personal favorite bit made it into this comp. "Luckily I can read barricade" will live in my head forever
If it wasn't for this dub we probably wouldn't have Abridged versions of anime here on RUclips
i can't remember what song i had on auto-play but it was PROBABLY something by Alkaline Trio, Sigur Ros, Blink 182, Modest Mouse, or Neutral Milk Hotel. i do remember the background of my page was an infinite loop of McLusky lyrics. that's all i've got
as the vid continues: man Helena was such a banger
In regards to the "gay as an insult" discussion, not that my opinion matters but I still got the right to throw it out there: Always found it hypocritical to make words off limits to being used in other unrelated ways. I mean, back when people did say "that's ret-r-d," they weren't talking about those people, just the same as no one intends to make fun of wheelchairs if they call something "lame."
Still a better Scooby-Doo adaptation than Velma.
40 mins of Alicia watching ghost stories dub hell yeass
38:24 yessss i’m so glad she watched it
When I had MySpace, my auto play song was Ride On Shooting Star by The Pillows.
Thanks I need to go listen to that now.
Well, to be fair the bar for being homophobic is so low now that it basically includes all of us... XD
The rabbit heh heh heh gets me every fucking time.
Wild hearing those voices knowing they voice act for more well known characters (nami mirajane etc )
The most amazing thing is recognizing all the voices from other things, often so much more wholesome characters, only to hear this shit said in their sweet voices LOL
alicia is the reason i believe that more cancer patients should become comedians, especially if "laughter is the best medicine"
"I think there's a short circuit between the chair and the keyboard"
=
"I think you just have no idea how to use a computer."
Can't believe I didn't think of this during the stream but seeing this suddenly reminds me of the Phoenix Wright dub outtake vids. Nowhere as bad as this iirc but still hilarious.
They are much more tame, but they're still gold!
I almost peed my pants when you said "I'll be your sober dadge" idk what about dadge killed me but it did
39:17 This dub is proof that human humor has peeked in the early 2000s (and after 2016 everything went to shit). 😅
I would say after 2011, things went downhill, internet wasn't the same anymore
Thank you Alicia for not only being my non drunk dad, but also watching one of the funniest shits ive ever seen in my life
So fun fact: It turns out the entire spiel about Ghost Stories flopping super hard so the owners just let ADV do whatever they wanted with it was made up.
I'd never thought I would ever see the day you'd react to the English dub! It's so friggin hilarious! The VA's just let loose back in the day!
Wow i totally forgot Myspace used to have music when you went to a page. I think mine was It's Not My Time by 3 Doors Down, lol.
Oh god she discovered the Ghost Stories Dub. In the dubbers defense they were literally told to just do whatever and they decided "fuck it"
(let's just hope Twitter/X doesn't discover it's existence and tries to cancel the voice actors since similar shit has happened before)
I guarantee you they already have and failed miserably.
For anyone questioning whether they would get "canceled" or not. A quick reminder that people tried to cancel berserk after the authors death because berserk had . . . "Sensative content"
The grandfather of the DARK fantasy genre had sensative content. No shit 😑
@@WillGlacier Keyword "tried"
They were not, in fact, told to just "do whatever".
@@murderalphabetinc.5162 god you are fun at parties, huh?
They were told to dub it however they wanted as long as they didn't stray away from the actual plot.
There. Are you satisfied?
I was literally thinking of the song on my MYspace to remember what it was called
And then she sings the chorus of Headstrong in perfect sync with it XD
The writers were on crack when writing this dub
There was no writing. The voice actors were basically told "go nuts"
What writers?
Yo the comp cut the punchline of the girl breaking up with the demon rabbit . It ends with the after saying “ I know now it could never work between us… not because you’re a rabbit but because you’re black” 🤣
You can’t tell me this isn’t the Greatest Dub of all time. Tell me another dub that provided a entertaining and equally as compelling and funny performance, while also being given the freedom to make it so, so much to the point that it’s considered to be infinitely better then the sub. I’ll wait.
Justin, you’re my fuckin hero. Not just because it’s a compliment. But because it’s just a simple statement of fact. Which is why we’re all so proud of it and so happy our hard work paid off. But, no, none of us ever suspected it would become the juggernaut it is today. I pinch myself every day
My old MySpace song was “On The Run” by Dr Steel
Hey, Alicia. I just wanted to say thank you for thinking our little show was worthy of your time. But what I really wanted to tell you is that YOU are a goddamn rock star. With your attitude, strength, and balls-oit bravery, cancer dies t stand a chance. Slay, girl. SLAY
Praise be the Creator!
Ghost stories apparently actually had a massively popular launch in Japan, apparently surpassing pokemon and doraemon originally, and it has 2 dubs a normal one by (I think) animax and this one which came from a miscommunication/lack of care or something from ADX
This dub is fucking WILD. I love it
3:49 fake news. It didn't flop. The Japanese company just didn't check what the English localizers were doing.
You know that localization drama earlier this year? Yea. It revealed a lot including the sad tale behind this dub
This anime dub is my uncensored childhood.
The “Just do your job, job-doer” v
Guy GOTTA be that girl’s dad talkin about some “Just drive the bus, bus driver.”
This anime performed decently well in Japan, so the whole origin story is dubious at best. Also I thought the guy that worked on this dub actually hated anime, but I could be wrong about that.
I have watched the entire anime and love seeing Peoples react to this
That's the thing.. It starts off kinda harmless in episode 1.. but as the show kept going, they just get more and more unhinged where they start dropping f-bombs.
OH NOOOOO! IVE HEARD OF THIS DUB! Alicia must have been in for a wild ride 😳
Bro, Pokémon The 3rd movie is my all time favorite! No big villain, just a little girl trying to get a family again and a bunch of reality warping alphabet soup gremOlins trying to help her.
Comments for the algorithm god! Clicks for the engagement throne! Thanks for the video.
0:38 nice to see Muncher is still insane
