If you're travelling with a special needs person, *you* have to prepare ahead to ensure the person is comfortable, but calling the child a "safety risk" is pretty bloody harsh.
Meredith Jenkins honestly United Airlines is the real loser here. Between diverting, landing, taxing, and taking off again to their destination they probably cost them selves 5-15 grand worth of jet fuel.
That is just messed up. There are so many children on planes CRYING and no one does anything about it. She makes a few noises and gets kicked off?? Smh.
People with autism are prone to violent meltdowns, which, in a small, compacted space such as an airplane, can be disastrous. A screaming baby does not have the capacity to be violent.
they treated this girl like she was a wild animal as if at any moment she'd attack. she's a person just like everyone else on the plane and should be treated as such. i'm sorry to the girl and her family. i'm also sorry to the little girl and her mom in the second clip, that must've been so embarrasing.
The mother, knowing her daughter special needs should have brought a thermos with a hot meal. The airline attendants should have help, but it was the mother’s first responsibility. Funny thing is that the first thing in People’s mind in situations like this is : LAW SUIT! Free money!!!
I was on 30 day Princess Cruise that covered most of Asia and I noticed a woman and her autistic child in the dining room. Her child was VERY loud and it bothered all of the people eating. I have some experience with autistic children so I made a very bad decision and walked over and asked the woman if I could help in some way. Normally that would be welcome but the woman flew into a rage and said there was "nothing wrong and to mind my own business", so I did. I noticed them several more times in that first week, always with the child screaming at the top of his lungs. Long story short, a couple days later I was sitting on my balcony and i noticed a scuffle on the gangplank between a woman and security personnel. It turned out to be the woman kicking and screaming as she and her child were physically thrown off the ship. One wonders if this woman on the plane even bothered to mention to the attendants or the boarding staff that she had an autistic child who might have behavior issues on the flight. Many of these mothers insist that their child is "normal" This is not true. They need special care and treatment and these women sometimes refuse to accept that..
i don’t like the princess cruise my family went when i was really little on Christmas eve and my sister sat on the carpet floor and when she sand up she notice thag there was blood on her knee a sewing needle got into my sisters knee and got trap in her kneecap my parents were fricking out saying that they need to go to the hospital but they refuse and got there medical center who did nothing to help and the crew mates said “we’re sorry about what happen but do u want a free picture with santa clause?” absolute bs they just didn’t want to get sued but they did now we think of this tragic moment after SEVEN surgeries the needle went on of her leg thank god but she has a huge scar on her knee now and it hurts to walk and her knee sometimes pops and she can’t run anymore and we never went on a princess cruise again f**k u princess do better
She really shouldn't have to announce such a thing, as if a child is radioactive and everyone needs to banish them. Human empathy is why we survived as a species, to help each other out. Stop being an evolutionary dead end and learn to treat disabled people with empathy
no, nothing to do with empathy, the child is disabled and needs special care which regular people don't know how to do as they aren't specialized in it AND they also deserve peace on their vacation, where is the empathy for them if they worked themselves so hard for a whole year or more just to have a vacation and then they have to endure a continuously screaming child? Screaming just like yelling or barking causes a physical stressful reaction in people and they have the right to say that that's not okay, if you're okay with it then go forth and volunteer to be in those unpleasant situations but don't bully others into it by attempting to make out as if its something to do with their empathy.
I find it sad to see how misunderstood the autistic community really is. I hope this young woman grows up to realize how much she matters to the world! I was diagnosed with autism at 4 and I know how it feels to have society judge her like that. Many of my peers thought I was ‘dumb’ and ‘weird’ while my parents and educators thought I was gifted. My advise to the autistic community is to keep your shoulders high and know that you are probably the smartest and most brilliant in the room!
Okay, United is officially the worst airline in this world. Edit: HOLY WOW how did I get 11K likes- I’m sorry if I offended anyone, I know my past opinion was aggressive. So they took a gamble and were wrong. It sucks that they had to get off and sucks MORE FOR THE PEOPLE INVOLVED, since they had no part in it and they lost time also I assume. We don't even fucking talk about the other passengers, who blame the airline but should blame the family. So because they knew this shit could happen, didn't have a hot meal prepared, or had the option to buy it (some airlines provide hot meals even in non first class as far as I know) they caused this to happen, ruined the flight for everyone else AND THEN THEY SUE? blame the mother she is the one that screwed up , flying? and not paying for things she knew was needed like a hot meal. no she the victim of her mothers stupidity here, the other passengers who were expecting a peaceful flight are the victims as well
So she knew the kid would freak without something hot and counted on being able to mooch something from 1st class to shut her up. It was her job to have what she knew the kid would want not the airlines.
Flight attendant of 17 years here. I don’t work for United but I know for a fact, NONE of the US domestic carriers are allotted extra “hot food” to offer non-1st class/business class passengers on flights. If we have 16 1st class passengers, we are provided 16 1st class meals. That’s it. No exceptions. And every single passenger eats their food because they not only prepaid for it, they also preordered their exact meal, days or weeks ahead of time. We are not at liberty to declare to a paying 1st class passenger, “Sorry. There’s a family demanding your meal for their daughter so, tough luck.” We also aren’t a magical restaurant. We can’t just make food appear at 30,000ft. We only have what we are catered on the ground. There’s literally nothing we can do, which is exactly what they would have explained to the mother. I’m willing to bet my retirement the food that ended up being provided was from a flight attendant’s own personal packed lunch cooler from her home, which is technically not allowed by any airline and FAA policy. She could have lost her job for doing a good deed and giving away her own dinner but clearly, the complaints and behavior escalated. What would this family have done had they been on Southwest? They don’t offer any meals on their flights because their exclusively B-737 retrofitted fleet is not equipped with ovens, 1st class, or the required galley space in order to do so. Furthermore, airlines don’t just divert for a mild inconvenience such as a teenager making quiet moaning sounds as the parent is claiming. It costs A LOT of money and the pilots and flight attendants are often the ones who take the brunt of the blame and have to submit tons of paperwork to make sure they aren’t issued disciplinary repercussions. I’d like to see the other side of this story because there seems to be way too many holes in it.
Yup, I thought the same thing. It really sucks that her kid has autism and was having a meltdown, but she knew before boarding that she wasnt provided a meal with her seat. She's saying she "needs a little support" for her special needs child, well waiting until your at cruising altitude before asking is stupid on her part. Absolutely no one was prepared or even able to help at that point, and that's 100% her fault. I also try to be patient with crying kids or anyone with a disability like this, but she probably wasn't "just" making noises. She was probably becoming aggressive for the pilot to have made the decision to make an emergency landing. They don't land for someone irritating other passengers- but they do if there is someone being unruly or violent. And child or not, autistic or not, I'd be willing to bet money that she was bordering on violent. Again, not the kids fault, but safety comes before prioritizing one unruly passengers comfort, especially when there's literally nothing you can do to fix it (like giving her a hot meal that doesn't exist).
The family got kicked off because the mother got an attitude with the flight crew when they told her they couldn’t help her with a situation she should have prepared for to begin with. Here is another news clip on this story where the mother says exactly what got them removed. ruclips.net/video/TqEZQxP1azM/видео.html
Girl with autism: **asks for hot meal** United: OMG OMG A TERRORIST DEPORT HER SHES DANGEROUS **Kid screaming for 6 hour flight** United: ya’ll hear sumn?
We have two healthy daughters and an autistic son. We are quite used to walking on eggshells around people, because we don't want to frighten kids, disturb people and generally get into trouble. But whatever we do, sometimes stuff just happens. So you can guess how jittery we were when we were flying home from Tokyo to Budapest (via Moscow), because we had heard stories like the one in the video. We had been training our son for months before the flight to behave normally and blend in, but of course we could not perfect his in-flight behavior. Thank you Aeroflot for having us and taking us home safely!
Well kid, this for some of us is another day in what should be paridise. Live your life cause ya only get one and have the most fun cause some take it all for granted. Just like this young lady I have to deal with lots of people like this and seeing your family torn up about it all is the worst. High hopes for the living sista and good luck out there!
@jwang604 #GreenNewDeal Or folks like us can lobby for change and hit them hard enough in the pocketbook that they''ll be begging! Travel is need when you have to put food on the table though. Some countries are coming up with ideas that will make air travel a thing of the past. We have wars over oil for jet fuel and for what, to fly you have to be invasively searched if your an individual who uses a mobility device to get around and the airlines don't want to make room for a wheelchairs on flights stating it would cost them too much? Really?
jwang604 Who are you to tell other people what they can and cannot do? If it’s a luxury and not a need then there is no reason you can’t just go without.
The world is not kind... People aren't kind That's the reality. But many hypocrites in the comments. Like the rich from the left who want the entire south America to illegally enter the US, but when they see one of those Mexicans near their big house, they will freak out and call the police, so they can take him back to his country, Many people in the comments are all supportive, nice, etc, but if they were in a flight with 5 babies and 9 1-4yo kids, all crying NON-STOP in unison for 5 hours straight, while the plane almost explodes with hours of consecutive turbulence , those 'gentle' humans would be the first to freak out, and would almost want to grab the kids and throw them out of the plane...! Yeah, people act in a certain way... until things actually happen to them.
I hate how companies and stuff like them can treat people with such disgust and impatience and then just throw out a sappy apology and claim to change and then just carry on with their life.
jwang604 that’s messed up that you’re telling me to just stay home just because my brother is different. My family and I will go wherever we want with my brother. Yes society doesn’t owe us anything but they do have to learn to act correctly in these situations.
An interesting fact, I was actually flying to Portland with my wife on this very same flight. We saw what happened. One part of me felt like it was for the safety of all of the passengers and crew members, but another part of me felt mortified. I had no idea how to feel. Part of me wanted to be like the man across the aisle from me, keeping in mind that we were in first class, but another part of me wanted to beg them not to kick them off the flight.
Was she a physical threat? No. Was she making people uncomfortable? Maybe. One lady said that it wasn't that she was autistic, but she might have climbed over her parents and maybe hit a crew member or opened an exit if that plane did not land.
God I'm so glad this never happened to me... I'm also autistic, and was on a flight once with sudden, severe turbulence. I am terrified of flying and was having a panic attack, crying hysterically and shaking but thankfully everyone was sympathetic, thankyou to the lovely Emirates staff that gave me a blanket to hide under
The moms eyes break my heart. Im sure she's been through some things. People can be so cruel. All she wants is to make sure her daughter is comfortable.
Wonder if daughter had taken all her meds that day. There are usually meds as needed for " storming".....if you aren't use to dealing w autism it can be terrifying.
That is disgraceful disgusting and despicable! I am autistic myself and if this happened to me, I will make sure the areline is sued with everything they got.
I totally feel for this mum and her daughter because my son is autistic and he does the same thing I hope the woman gets computation for the mistreatment that her and her daughter faced on that flight.

There is SO much more to this story. Her daughter's condition did NOT pop uo an hour BEFORE the flight, but since she was 3 yrs old. The daughter was screaming, & hittind airline personnel, while the father was caught saying "There's gonna be a lawsuit, & we WILL win." I saw the original tape, & the mother was such a demanding BLANK. When they were put off the plane, the ENTIRE plane ERUPTED in applace. It was TRULY horrible the way the ma & pa treated the flight attendants.
BootsNsaddle No. the airline was being incredibly rude and disrespectful too the passengers. The mother asked multiple times for something warm, to simply calm her child. She offered to PAY. That should have been enough.
I’m a Autistic man and honestly, the flight crews lack of understanding is terrible. The whole situation could have been avoided if they simply listen to what the mother asked and did so. I know this is 6 years old, but honestly, there has to have been some change over the years. If not, well don’t expect more passengers in the future.
I have autism and Bipolar two disorder, and whenever I have a meltdown or people tell me to “hurry up” in public, I get really upset, stressed, and cry. I am high functioning, and I get misunderstood all the time. It sucks! Whenever I am out in public, I know how to behave, but I also feel when I am about to have a meltdown or someone who is in line tells me to “hurry up,” I feel like crying and screaming, but I fear that if I do either of those two things, people will think that I am being a spoiled brat and/or a Karen. I want to teach people these lessons on how to deal with people with disabilities/special needs: Please be patient, listen to what the loved ones and the person that they are helping have to say (even if the person with the disability or disabilities is non verbal), and be kind! If you are the type of person that cannot handle dealing with people with disabilities/special needs (seen or invisible), either get sensitivity training or not get a job dealing with people that are different from you!
If she needs hot food as a parent it’s your responsibility to provide it. If you know she will get upset then you buy some hot food in the terminal before you board and have an insulated bag for it.
You're not sure, you don't know how they started the journey... The flight attendants could have solved it, but I guess IT'S UP TO THE COMPANY AND THEIR PRACTICE WITH PASSENGERS:
The girl needed a hot meal in this instance? That manifestly falls within the ADA's "reasonable accommodation" mandate. I'd love to know if her parents pursued an ADA complaint and how much the airline settled for out of court; unfortunately, out of court settlements are confidential.
It doesn’t work that way, the airplane it’s not a restaurant ! Most of the time catering provides the exact amount 1 for each first Class passenger, so unless one of the first class passengers decided not to eat there would be no meals available ! There’s no such thing as buying a first class meal ! At the end of the day she got her meal, but the mom needs to provide food for her daughters needs ! The airport is full of restaurants that were some how ignored to then decide to purchase a first class meal, is that even a thing ?
Carlos Cantu, I see your point of view. And I understand now but I’m still slightly leaning towards the opposite side. The mother had brought snacks for her daughter that she thought she was going to eat and be satisfied but it didn’t turn out that way
•Titanium Mystery• you can never really plan for children on the spectrum. It kind of just happens . They have their fits that most have no control over. That’s just how that works. Yes she should’ve brought something else for her to eat that was hot, but then again you can’t bring certain types of liquids on the plane.
Thats horrible. There's so many spoiled kids that scream during the whole flight and they have nooo health issues. And nothing happens to them. This is horrible
That poor kid already so much to deal with, and being on the plane was too much for her. It's always stressful flying, but for someone with autism, even if you have it mildly, it's a lot to deal with. Those flight attendants and pilot who said no and kicked them off just because she was having an episode, they should be absolutely ashamed of them themselves and have a strong lessons in manners and empathy!
I agree with taping him down but the mouth tape was excesive. That can make someone unable to breath. With my asthma that limited breathing ability would set of an attack.
Why don't parents who KNOW something like this may happen, contact the airline beforehand in order to PREVENT things from happening? If the mother knows that the daughter gets unruly if she doesn't have a warm meal, then why didn't she contact the airline before the flight and arrange for one? I'm sure things would have gone very differently. Too many times people automatically side with the parent but this parent could have done better.
I can so relate … once these kids don’t get what they need they go full fledge even when the food is given… they want what they want when they want it and a lil food assistance from the attendant when first asked could have prevented this… shame on that attendant

The reason the little girl had a meltdown is because she probably had sensory overload. Autism just is just a different way of our brain functioning, then yours. My favourite part was how they could have made some extra money with the meal, but instead lost hundreds of thousands doing the emergency landing 😂

People with autism are prone to violent meltdowns, which, in a small, compacted space such as an airplane, can be disastrous. A screaming baby does not have the capacity to be violent.

Dani _ phantom I understand that but if she can explain that to the pilot before hand maybe she can bring a meal and warm it up on the plane
So because someone has autism means they cant do enjoyable things that normal people do?
i don’t like the princess cruise my family went when i was really little on Christmas eve and my sister sat on the carpet floor and when she sand up she notice thag there was blood on her knee a sewing needle got into my sisters knee and got trap in her kneecap my parents were fricking out saying that they need to go to the hospital but they refuse and got there medical center who did nothing to help and the crew mates said “we’re sorry about what happen but do u want a free picture with santa clause?” absolute bs they just didn’t want to get sued but they did now we think of this tragic moment after SEVEN surgeries the needle went on of her leg thank god but she has a huge scar on her knee now and it hurts to walk and her knee sometimes pops and she can’t run anymore and we never went on a princess cruise again f**k u princess do better
I quite agree.

How many cases of autistic people you hear on planes that make scenes??? Very little to ZERO. So they took a gamble and were wrong. It sucks that they had to get off and sucks MORE FOR THE PEOPLE INVOLVED, since they had no part in it and they lost time also I assume. Not inconvenient, it's just not what they paid for
So she knew the kid would freak without something hot and counted on being
able to mooch something from 1st class to shut her up. It was her job to have what she knew the kid would want not the airlines.
She offered to BUY the first class meal. Is she supposed to pack the gusset of her knickers with hot food?
How exactly do you pack a hot meal on a plane these days?
I bet uou can't take cooked food on plane so does first class only get meals that are hot give prople in coach class option to buy cooked food
I 100% agree with you
I'm always surprised that nobody cares about the comfort of the other paying passengers on plane. 🤦🏽♀️
Feed her before boarding or bring hot meal on.
Cost to divert flight = $200,000 +/-
Cost of a first class meal = $50 +/-
Bad call on the airlines part
you now mean $200,050
Some airlines cater up to the passenger capacity dear. If there are only 4 business class passengers they load only 4 meals.
Alma Coleman PERFECTLY EXPLAINED, Airlines are foolish for this reason!
The family got kicked off because the mother got an attitude with the flight crew when they told her they couldn’t help her with a situation she should have prepared for to begin with.

The worst thing about illnesses mental or otherwise is that people expect you to act as if you don't have them.
Wish you as a mom the best of luck with your baby boy! With lots of love and care he'll blossom like a rose! It's always scary at first but always remember it's you he looks up to and you might quite surprised with how much he'll pick on in the next years to come. My friend Joce is socialworker and a strong willed young lady who can plan events in heartbeat. She doesn't let having special needs deter her and even more determined to hold perpatrators like these individuals accountable. She is a strong ally and we both have gotten as close as we can get. Your son will have better opportunities than "WE" both had. Whatever is out there is our only witness.
My mom has cp and I feel this hard...
DreamersCosplay it’ll be alright . Take it one day at a time . I’ve Always wanted to make a group for moms , children , families . Sometimes some people still need extra help . I’m always willing to help while I’m getting helped . Conversation, gifts cards , toys , books , clothing . I love and try to help those who suffer from the same birth defect or by other health issue . Soon I will be able . I should start a RUclips channel for that .

United: I CANT TAKE THIS
So true
It's because she's older and the expected her to behave
Carter Pao that’s bullshit tho. Any one of any age can have issues like that. It’s messed up if she’s expected to act a certain way. They don’t know everyone’s situation so it shouldn’t be an expectation...
@@paigejones2195 how is it bs? That's the truth. You don't expect a two year old to behave but you do expect a 15 year old not to throw a tantrum and cause a disruption that can and did make people uncomfortable
@@paigejones2195 so anytime someone who looks of age is acting out we shouldn't do anything because it could be mental illness? That's bullshit. If she really can't control any part of it, then they shouldn't be flying with her. And sorry but that's how the world works. When you see a toddler throwing a tantrum in the store, that's expected because they are at an age where they do that. If you see a teen doing the same thing, then it is different. And we shouldn't chalk up all misbehavior to mental illness. I know plenty of teens who act out worse then that but are perfectly healthy. Misbehavior can't be excused because of disabilities
This should be illegal

I almost cried. This is so sad. People are sympathetic and know if its just being a brat or a special case. Breaks my heart. Just awful. Too much cost cutting that they cant even provide a hot meal. Or the flight crew just did not have the intelligence to think.
My son has autism so I know exactly how this feels. It can be such a isolating feeling. My heart goes out to this family, shame on the airline for not considering that people with autism need to travel too. Accommodations can make a difference. Do better

Right! She wasn’t going to harm anyone it is not like she was about to hurt somebody on the plane.
Why didn't her family feed her before hand??? Knowing she'd act like that ... Its always up to everybody else huh? No lets put responsibility where it should be... Why do they not put security cameras on planes? How hard would that be?

@@thumpertorque_ Wow congratulations. You just described how she has a behavior issue.
Anonymous Suomynona I have ASD and yes, autism affects the way we behave and communicate. It’s not a behavior issue though. The reason the little girl had a meltdown is because she probably had sensory overload. Autism just is just a different way of our brain functioning, then yours. She doesn’t have a meltdown because of her behavior, she has one because the change in environment is overwhelming for her. Autism affects our behavior but it doesn’t mean our behavior is bad. If you want you can message me on ig so you can be more educated on what autism really is. :)

Mothers like her should be honoured, they go through soo much to raise a special child. Imagine how anxious the mother must feel about the future of the child in this world without her. People are heartless these companies need to come up with some sympathetic policies for families or special kids or PETS on board
This is why I salute my parents. Me and my brother both have special needs. There can be a lot of shouting in the house, particularly my brother autism and adhd thrown into the mix. We are both teenagers dealing with all these mood swings but then autism and adhd thrown into the mix as well proper escalates it. Its not easy for our parents I tell ya.

I see two wrongs. Arrogant airline staff and a spoilt brat. I have a mild form of autism, but spoiling your child does them no favours whether they have a disability or not.
The reason she makes those noises is because she is used to getting her own way. Even so, the Airline could've been a bit more accommodating and used some common sense.
@@Aerojet01 the noises aren’t forced they’re usually caused by tics, she most likely has a more severe version of autism. the mother said she isn’t vocal.
