An extraordinary performance. Langridge is wonderful, Norman is sublime (her voice is like velvet), Sukowa is a wonderful (slightly unhinged) Sprecherin, fantastic choir and orchestra. And of course Abbado - the roar he gets when reappears is as moving as the ending of the work. You can feel the love and admiration in the room.

J'ai découvert cette oeuvre magistrale il y a une quinzaine d'années lors du festival de musique des Canaries à Las Palmas. J'ai tout de suite été enthousiasmé par cette composition de A. Schönberg. Une semaine après la disparition de l'immense Diva Jessye Norman (je la pleure enncore), je la redécouvre à nouveau avec une interprétation magistrale. Un vrai bonheur!

That was one of my - if not THE most unforgettable concert experiences. The amount of sound and emotion in the hall was absolutely overwhelming. I witnessed the general rehearsal as well, when Jessye Norman asked to participate in the final chorus as well, and I will never forget her radiating happiness in being part of this music. But since she outsung almost the whole chorus, she did not participate in the chorus in the actual concert. The gorgeously beautiful and expressive voices of the unforgettable Norman, Gray (who's fantastic gifts sadly did not cause him to become the world's leading Heldentenor of his generation, as we expected him to be after this towering performance), the heartstopping Fassbaender, the inimitable Langride and the great Welker, not to speak of the unique Sukowa, the undescripeable enthusiasm of the young orchestras, the gigantic sound of the chorusses and above all Abbado's masterly and encouraging direction - all this caused an experience of al lifetime of this most wonderful piece of music.
Concert begins at 11:00. Composition begins at 13:15. Part 1 13:15 Part 2 1:22:20 Part 3 1:27:40 A wonderful performance. It's nice to see Abaddo young, handsome, and, especially, healthy. One odd thing is that the tenor singing Waldemar is placed in the middle of the orchestra, rather than down front with Abaddo and the other soloists. I wonder why?
Thanks for sharing! I knew about this concert from a documantary of Claudio Abbado and I always had the dire to listen/ watch this concert. So I'm very happy to have now the possibility! It's a special piece for me because we sang it in 1985 also in the Berlin Philharmonic, also with Brigitte Fassbaender, but with Susan Dunn and Riccardo Chailly and the RSO (and others). - And this performance and rehearsals: unforgettable!
Am 8.8.1988 haben wir (Irene Ober & Knox G. Stallbauer) dieses Konzert live in Berlin erlebt. Wir wurden von Gudrun Nagel, einer Hamburger Freundin eingeladen. Sie besorgte uns die Karten und schenkte uns diesen für uns unvergesslichen Abend und Kunstgenuss. Wenn ich jetzt, im Jahr 2017 ihrer bedenke und gedenke erfüllt mich ein tiefes Gefühl von Dankbarkeit und Liebe. Gudrun Nagel, Du weilst leider nicht mehr in dieser Welt. ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG, der Schöpfer dieser Musik-Legende auch nicht mehr.. Wir leben noch, Irene und Knox. Damals waren wir jung. Ich selbst 38 Jahre und meine geliebte Irene 33 Jahre alt. Nun bin ich 67 Jahre alt geworden und tief bewegt durch den Kunstgenuss, den ich mit diesem Film erleben darf. So bin ich natürlich auch stolz, dass ich hier mit dabei sein durfte in diesem grossen Saal in Berlin.Seinerzeit ! Danke!! Auch ein Dank, daß dieser Film nun für die Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung steht.. Vielleicht kann dieser hier für weitere meiner Facebook-Freund von Interesse sein. Viel Spaß dabei. Ich werde mir den Film bestimmt noch öfters ansehen und wieder genießen und die GURRELIEDER - Geschichte vertiefen in meiner Kunst-Seele. ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG gehört zu den ganz großen und bedeutenden Musikern und Komponisten der Menschheits-Geschichte.
Unvergessliche Aufführung für mich. Leider nie auf CD erschienen obwohl eine Ausnahme mit den unvergleichlichen Sängerinnen - ich hatte sie auf VHS aufgezeichnet. Fassbaender ist für mich die tollste Sängerin für diese Partie - unerreicht im Ausdruck und der Tiefe. Danke 🙏🏻
What a fantastic concert!!! But now, after Brexit, young musicians of GB must be very sad because they will be excluded of the EUYO. Johnson and his followers don't understand the huge importance of moments like this, but J.C. Juncker understood this importance and made it possible that the EUYO would go on receiving funds of th EU.

I checked, and don't think so. Can you give details at which time it is not synchronized? Unfortunately it is a transfer from a VHS video tape (30 years old). I was not able to find a better copy, not even the German tv-station ZDF, that originally broadcasted the performance, has a copy in the archives. I would be happy, if anyone would upload a better copy.
sentlinger How odd that I just watched a segment and audio & video are synchronized. It wasn't so last night when I first watched it. What could have caused the desynchronization on my end? Poor buffering? In any case, thank you for uploading. Fassbaender's Waldtaube is utterly captivating. So is Norman as Tove. By the way, my favorite Gurrelieder of all remains the Norman, Troyanos, McCracken with Ozawa and the Boston SO. It’s uploaded fresh only on Nov. 26, 2020. Though it’s not the ZDF version we are looking for. It's from the BBC Proms 1987. The constructions and recorded date are very close to that ZDF version. It’s played by (British) National Youth Orchestra, led by Sn. Jessye Norman and conducted by late Pierre Boulez. Please visit there and listen to it if you are interested in.
