  • The Memon community always fascinated me, with lots of friends from the community I've been privileged to enjoy their incredible cuisine. The first converts to Islam came from Thatta Sindh this mercantile community has come a long way. Pir Gilani of Bagdad's disciple converted a section of the Lohano Tribals who became the first Momins in the Subcontinent.as they moved south, and east they integrated flavours traditions spices & recipes blending with their past to make incredible food .
The question of who are the original Memons was so revealing, ive always thought of them as migrants from across the border but their history tells us otherwise: Sindhi, Kuch & Katiaywar are the three largest communities.
Their culinary heritage carries all these journeys enriching our palate and heritage.
walking through their neighbourhoods and markets the spices ingredients vegetables all telling us tales. I found several new items and fruits and spices which I had never known before. I hope you also enjoy this food adventure tour as much as I did.
there is an incredible story of how the Traders of upper Sindh are linked to Hazrat Yusuf/ Jesus Christ, I was most intrigued and was delighted to see all these connection we have with so many parts through the millennia.
This episode captures a window into this incredibly successful community in Pakistan and is dedicated to the late Abdur Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi who dedicated their lives for the people of Pakistan.
I am grateful to all of them in helping me record some their incredible cultural stories and incredible culinary histories.

Good to see the great granddaughter of Sir Adamjee, a great Memon.
    Am Halai Memon from Madras.
Let me add some info I have, in a nutshell:
Memons: A tribe (out of 84 tribes) of 700 families (of Lohana cast/Vaishya cast) in Thatta, Sind, converted to Islam by Hazrath Yusuffudin Abu Zakaria Yahya, direct descendant of Hazrath Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani of Baghdad, in 1421 AD. Because of ostracism from other tribes, they moved to nearby Varia, then in a few years, 600 families moved to Halar, Kathiawar, Gujarat. More than being called Kathiawari Memons, we are called Halai Memons (from Halar).
Then in 1545 AD, when Humayun attacked Sind, many who had stayed back, moved to Kutch, Gujarat. Later called Katchi Memons. All those who stayed back in Sind, are Sindhi Memons.
Halai Memons, Kutchi Memons, Sindhi Memons. Majority are Halai Memons.
Then there were further migrations due to following:
1828 Famine and plague in Gujarat.
1858 British crown take over of East India Company admin.
    1900 Kathiawar famine.
    1918 Crisis of rupee devaluation.
    1947 Partition.

The theory of 700 families converted from Lohanas is very flimsy. Assuming 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 5 children on average gives us a sum of 6,300 converts. The population of South Asia, according to Angus Maddison a distinguished British economist, was 150million in 1400AD and around 2.25billion in 2020, an increase of around 15 times, therefore those 6300 converts would translate to a population of 94,500 Memons in 2020. We all know the population of Memons is 1.8million, so working backwards that would translate to 120,000 persons or around 13,300 families converting, 20 times the number bandied about.

The documentary clearly explains how from the 83 different castes of the Lohana people, one of the sub castes converts to Islam and hence are socially boycotted by the rest of the Lohana Tribe. The film also informs us that being a trading community from around a city called Thatta which was an important trading hub and also the Capital of medieval Sindh.
So these converts to Islam were referred to as Mum'min who later were called Memons when they migrated to Kutch and Kathiawad in present day Gujarat. Thats how the became Kutchi Memons and Kathiawadi Memons.

And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it.
