    Maestro Kimon, that video was so enjoyable, both relaxing and informative, I shall watch it again!
    BTW, If you could play the instrument for 30 or 40 seconds at the end, I would like that very much. To me playing the instrument after repairing it gives closure to the story, imho. Thank you for sharing.

      Thank you for your kind words. There are more people asking me to play the instruments as soon as they are finished but I don't do in on purpose: I have trued to record instruments but noticed the all the equipment (mic, camera, postproduction, encoding, RUclips compression, speakers of the viewer) influence the sound very much and could make a good instrument sound very poorly. As I don't want people to say that my repaired instruments don't sound wel, I don't play on them on video.

    Maestro, I am doing a repair of a cello that had multiple cracks in the top. When I removed the top I saw that there had also been some repair work done a long time ago. What is your view on painting the inside of the top with hide glue? I have seen this done before and was wondering what you think of this technique, and if you think I should do this before I reattach the top of this cello?

  • @davidwaring3688

    On an earlier repair on a 1990s cello you used hide glue with wood cleats. Why is multiplex and white glue appropriate on this repair? I am repairing a 1911 contrabass balalaika and want a long term solution. Thanks for the great videos.

    • @maestrokimon

      Hello Davide. I have to say that I'm changing a bit from hide glue to white glue for some kind of repairs. I will make a video on the matter a.s.a.p. But it depends also on the kind of instrument and the kind of client.

    Those clamps you use to hold down the reenforcement on the back plate are clever! Could similar clamps be made to use as bass bar clamps do you think?

    Hello. Love your videos. Where can I buy the thin Multiplex board in Australia. I have a French Vuillaume 'modele d apres' ' cello that has a base rib crack on both sides of endpin. They are about 3 inches in length. One side is by winning to get a raised side on crack. Also would I have to take of whole front to apply clamps or could I do it through endpin hole.

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  4 года назад

      There is no way to repair the varnish unfortunately. Crackle can't be removed in another way than removing the varnish, and that is very bad for the instrument.

    Maestro, some repairers swear by Titebond Original (wood glue). I think for older instruments Hide Glue is superior as it can withstand the test of time and allows for easy repairs. Is this correct? I also think that for repairing cracks that Titebond may be better but otherwise hyde glue is it.

    • @maestrokimon
      @maestrokimon  4 года назад

      I also use Titebond original. But I'm not very keen on Titebond Hide glue as t takes a lot of time to dry, is my experience. Since some time I use Titebond original (white glue) for cracks as they wont have to be opened again. For all the rest I use hot hide glue.
