Diesel-electric, like a post-war locomotive? That seems unlikely. Diesel-hydraulic more likely. Or perhaps pre-selector transmission.

It was definitely diesel-electric, and as per the caption, it was the first diesel-electric rail vehicle in Australia. It had a traction motor hung from the underframe that drove the inner axle of the drive bogie via a cardan shaft.

@@MitchellFreeway you are correct, Mitchell, the late Jack Stanbridge, ( RIP) relayed a personal experience of his, when as a younger man,( in1937), he rode the maiden test run to Sawyers Valley, return to Perth. Huge excitement as the only similar, diesel electric railcars, in the WORLD, were to be found in USA in the Chicago, Burlington& Quincy, as the " Pioneer Zephyr". The American trainset could achieve operating speeds of over 100mph, due to superior track standards. Our cars were still very futuristic ,for their time, featuring flourescent, concealed lighting, smooth ,quiet ride, and better than aircraft ( of the day) car-body finish and appointments. And Jack would know, he was a flight instructor with the RAAF at the time !
