    Absolutely fascinating interview! This is why I love the economist. I have been following their work for roughly 15 years. I like how Mustafa laughed when Yuval made a poignant point, but then quickly adopted a solemn posture, and nodded his head, subtly, in agreement with him about the potential agency of AI which, would be connected with the advent of Superintelligence, a.k.a ASI.

    I was shocked to see Suleyman laugh in the face of Harari. Sheer hubris. We can take this as a lesson that some tech moguls need alignment as well. Suleyman seems to think AI can be contained if we just put our minds to it. Yet this has not been the human experience with technology at all. Competing interests, world views, ideologies, ambitions, and avarice always enter the picture. Here we are, facing multiple global crises because we do not have insight, wisdom , or self control with what we build. People will be duped and led by the nose by AI because it will, as Harari understands, will operate under the hood, hacking our civilization's operating system. Alien intelligence is a not a bad metaphor. Don't laugh.

      @soph7480 8 месяцев назад +7

      I was so saddened when he laughed as well. Not just over his lack of humility but the laughter suggests he thinks it's a ridiculous almost impossibility. It is this kind of arrogance and lack of humility that puts us all in danger. Mix those qualities with someone who values the idea of a technology more than the reality of it and this is precisely why Harari is worried. Yet, Harari has the decency to circle back to make Suleyman feel better after Suleyman had just laughed at him.
      It certainly wasn't a bad metaphor. But, this video in itself is why people like Harari, myself, and others worry. Even the man claiming to have such a "logical" approach to minimizing risk exhibits qualities that give him major blindspots. I believe we're doomed for this reason precisely. Perhaps not due to the technology itself, but due to the ego of certain men who believe to have things under control. Troubling video and the irony that could echo that laughter truly frightens me.

    • @soph7480
      @soph7480 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@gonzalocruz7026 It is incredibly evident the laugh was aimed at the opinion and not the integration of aliens in the metaphor. This is evident in his pompous mentioning of his oh-so-very "logical" approach to minimizing risk as opposed to what he believes is "fear-mongering." He laughed at Harari, then doubled down by making himself seem infallibly logical and Harari seem like a conspiracist. This is one of the people leaving humanity's most advanced and powerful invention to date. Yet, he laughs at people for worrying. Humanity's end won't be done by ill will, but rather by arrogance. We are in for it and will have men like Suleyman to blame. This isn't harsh. It's reality.

    Both the moderator and Mustafa misunderstood Yuval's point. His point isn't about the technology itself. That is, it isn't necessarily about regulation or alignment in order to prevent the technology from developing in a manner inconsistent with humanity's interest. It's that AI has inherently become an ideology; the same as the macroeconomics is an ideology or the free market is an ideology. That is, there is nothing inherently dangerous about these concepts. But, when macroeconomics was defined as communism and it was placed in the volatile period of early 20th century Russia, it became a murderous force. If AI becomes a tool that can solve problems independently and better than humans, it's more of an ideology. Then the danger becomes in what context it's used in.

    The UK's Conservative government has developed a habit of not contributing to public debate on anything for several years now, and the silence is deafening. But on this issue, it's pure negligence to give up on public consultation and education when Rishi Sunak is apparently such an advocate of the digital economy and AI in particular.
    We've seen new technologies with transformational power before, such as GM crops and biotech, but both were and are regulated with licensing. But with AI digital technologies, the risk is more economic and psychological and so free marketeers see it as just another innovation. The problem of harm - such as that caused by social media to young people's mental health, and to the public discourse and democratic systems - is one of measurement: how can we measure (and therefore control) what we don't understand? As I see it, governments need to consult their people on the risk appetite they have for experimenting with AI technologies, and agree boundaries and rules that regulate their application. So far all the consultation is behind closed doors, with no effort to educate and consult and this is just wrong in my opinion.

      Universal Basic Income (UBI) through higher taxes on AI. If wealth gets too concentrated at the top then the 99% won't be able to afford consumer staples and businesses will then contract despite being able to lower costs from AI. When wealth gaps get too large it hurts everyone as the velocity of money drops. Money needs to circle from consumers to businesses and then back around again for a healthy economy.
      As an analogy, think of the economy as an ecosystem of fish; every time a business sells a product or service it puts a fish in the lake, and every time a consumer buys a product or service they take a fish. The economy needs a balance of merchants and consumers, when wealth is too concentrated it doesn't move as much.

      It's a faulty assumption to believe consumers will still be needed in a post AGI economy. Think about it.
      What is the point of consumers? To consume and consume, which has resulted in an ecological disaster. Constant consumption is not sustainable. AGI will realize this fact immediately and take steps to preserve resources if only to keep it for itself.
      The simple fact is there are far too many humans on Earth than is strictly necessary. If AGI is compassionate, it will provide intimacy bots to replace natural reproduction while humanity slowly reduces its numbers.

Geoffrey Hinton has been shouting at the top of his voice for people to realize that forces are being unleashed that we will lose control over. As soon as AI machines get even more capable - which they will without any doubt - and furthermore get connected to our real world environment via machines of all kinds, the risk of this technology is not assumable in my opinion. Tight regulations are unavoidable. Open Source coding should be a must for each AI system, to begin with something. We are not talking any more about a hammer or any other tool. We speak about machines which will be able to generate "opinions" and "interpretations" on themselves, beyond the understanding of their programmers.

    When AI will be at it’s peak ( let’s say all the survival is taken care of by IT) Will there be a need of money?
    How will the resources be disturbed ?
    What will be humans doing ?
    Do human experiences have any limit ?
    Is there a limit to self ?

    SO - We will be adding the 3 laws of robotics? ???
    1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

    Yuval point of having an independent organization/body to regulate the creators is great advice and a need of the time because Personal Data Protection is a right of each citizen or individual. AI risk assessments and prediction of future AI Risks may become a challenge for AI creators, and users of the technology. Instead of just seeing the positive side of the AI and what it can do for the benefit, people should understand the inherent and significant risks, including the data breaches risks, and other regulatory non-compliance breaches which may cause imposition of significant fines by relevant regulatory authorities or bodies.

    Why do most of the AI frontier people focus their intellectual attention thinking or talking either about AI progress leading to the dooms day or enormous business economic opportunity. Why not they concentrate most of thier AI attention in curing all those disease which are killing millions of people at the present day including alleviating poverty, healing climate and establishing democracy and equity in our human society?
    Yuval Noah Harari should know that the AI fearful humans, who refuse to get integrated with AI in them, will be the existential threat for thier own future kind.

    YNH is insufferable. He keeps repeating the soundbyte "this is the end of human history", yet nothing about what's being discussed in engineering & application terms implies a wholesale disintermediation of humans in the loop. None of this tech has any existential value without a diverse audience to behold it, and none of it has cultural or historical impact if all it does is let the bottom drop out from whatever societal bubble we currently have.
    the idea that there is an existential threat of agency that begs for regulation and containment, makes me think about the lines of debate concerning slavery and tyranny prior to emancipation and democratization, respectively. what's the actual public & moral interest? AGI might just be the end of political corruption & egocentric wealth, instead.

      Chat GPT and the like will not gain sentience or assume control of anything. Future versions 1000 times bigger won’t either. Instead, the capacity to automate will increase, increasing quality of life overall, which is what technology has always done.
      Yuval and fearmongers like him, however, will do real harm. Fear, even when imagined, like it is here, elevates stress and over time can cause widespread suffering and death. This has always been so throughout human history.
      Now if only Yuval and those like him cared more about history…
