  • This was absolutely EPIC, a long old slog. I took this hike slow and steady, I think around three or four hours from Wasdale to the summit.
Climbing England's Highest Mountain: Scafell Pike
This was actually my second time in Wasdale, one of my all-time favorite places. It's so scenic and beautiful around Wastwater (which is also the deepest body of water in the Lake District).
Scafell Pike stands at 3,210 ft/978 m tall and towers above the Wasdale Valley. On a good day, and with good eyes (maybe binoculars), they say you can see over to the Isle of Man... although my eyes barely allow me to watch TV without the old contact lenses in.
This, along with many other peaks in the Lake District, has been on my hit list for a while. I didn't get the opportunity to hike/camp at Wasdale on my previous trip. However, I was determined that I wasn't going to let the weather beat me this time, not after a six-and-a-half-hour road trip anyway!
I did this hike/summit solo. Don't be too afraid to just get out there and start. I met so many lovely people on the hike up, and everyone was there to support each other!
The summit of Scafell Pike was an emotional one to reach. I almost shed a tear as I cracked open my beer, but the conditions were rancid and cold, with slippery rocks, hail, rain, and gusts of wind. This meant that people were quick to tap the trigger, grab their selfies, and head back down below the cloud line. At the other end of Wasdale, the weather was warm and dry... slightly annoying.
I took way too much kit. I did intend on wild camping, so I took the Osprey Atmos AG65 packed with all the hiking and wild camping kit needed for a two-night trip, which I didn't use or need. Weighing in at around 15 kg, people were asking what charity I was supporting!
