  • We are fast-tracking the conversion work at LAship shipyard in Houma, La. so that this former OSV vessel can transit to the Med for finishing. In anticipation of ABS class inspections and USCG Port inspections prior to transit, all SOLAS and ship operating systems are being inspected, tested, and made ready. Thus far we have replaced the emergency CAT generator, overhauled the windlass, removed large below-deck tanks and cargo rails, and prepped the entire aft deck area to receive new accommodation modules.
    In the next video we'll go through the engine room, Z-Drive steering system and the 'guts' of the vessel. Stay tuned.

    I’m very excited to see the different stages of this conversion all the way to completion! So far so good.😊

    Great opportunity to market the reduction in the carbon footprint of a new built compared the refit. perhaps incorporating some of the lessons learned from the new built into this one. The big deck space also creates great options for modular configurations based on the owners requirements for the specific expedition. Just so much that can be done. Cant wait to see the final product.

      Will do. Heading back to Louisiana next week- depending on hurricanes, of course.

    You listed the owner's requirements in an earlier video. Somehow the combination of meeting those requirements, and possibly some financial advantage, tipped the scale in favor of conversion over purchase of a conventional boat. How close was the owner to going with a traditional purchase?

      He had his mind set on a conversion. Other options included research ships and patrol vessels. The OSV had the volume and stability.

    I like it. Is all of the design work complete? Do you worry about political and currency instability in Turkey?

      Still a work in progress. Turkey has mostly been a reliable builder thus far. They are part of Nato, OECD and G20 with strong and stable economy.

    Love the idea. How much for a brand new ice classed osv with diesel electric and retractable fin stabilizers. Finished to mega yacht standards. 220 ft? Class bridge ect ty keep posting ty

      Roughly half the price of a European 'brand' yacht, delivered in less time.

    This is very cool, but what is the total coat? And I've never gotten an answer to the parts taken off and sold. Is the money received from the sale of those items no longer needed, is that money applied towards the build or is it splt for the removal, but would have been removed anyways, but is it just money to the shipyard?

      I can't share costs on this vessel, but can tell you what other vessels will likely cost for conversion. In terms of removed items- often the cost of the removal is equal to the value of the systems, so it is a wash.

    I'm guessing it's a security/privacy issue, but I'd love to see the plans for the new vessel and see what she's going to become!

    Do you take the DP2 system out altogether or simply modernise it?
    Is DP really no use on a fancy superyacht?

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  3 месяца назад

      Unless it is a serious dive vessel that needs to hover over a reef dive site, instead of anchoring; the DP is not necessary. It is also can be dangerous for swimmers when system is in use, for obvious reasons.

    If I was a benevolent billionaire I'd outfit a dozen of these vessels as marine research ships that could include 20 or 30 students and kids and make them available to countries that can't usually afford them. Teach them the realities as opposed to the climate doom stuff. I guess that means everywhere except Western countries at present, unfortunately.
