  • On June 8th, Japanese publisher Kadokawa Corporation discovered they had been hit by a significant cyberattack. Now, after a thorough investigation by external cybersecurity experts, they've confirmed the scope of the data breach.
Over 254,000 individual records were compromised. This includes sensitive personal information on former and current employees, business partners, students, and more. Things like names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, bank details - you name it.
It gets worse too. Not only was personal data taken, but also internal company documents and contracts with partners. So this is a huge breach with serious implications.
Now, the way it went down was through a ransomware attack on Kadokawa's data centers. Investigators believe attackers first got in by phishing employee credentials, which then gave them access to deploy ransomware on the internal network.
