There's something I failed to mention in this video:
- ALWAYS USE 3 POINTS OF CONTACT WHEN ENTERING OR EXITING THE TRUCK
This is very important. I don't know if it's been elevated to the point of autofail if you forget it, but there are some saying it has. It is important nonetheless.
@@getrichwalmart oh they have failed people for not using 3 points of contact. Was told at the Dallas location they have someone fail, who jumped out of the truck and said “done” right at the end of the pre trip. He did a successful pretrip but because he jumped off and not using 3 points of contact he failed. Since it was Friday he lost his opportunity to retest and had to reapply to Walmart again.
Also btw your pre trip helped and was extremely similar to Walmarts pretrip!
Passed onboarding Thursday
@@PlanetPaper-km4bk thanks, and congratulations!
Just passed on boarding yesterday in Garland,Tx!!!!!
@@MRDWIGHTG awesome, congratulations!
What Dc you out of ?
Rich I just finished my on boarding and your pre trip video definitely helped me achieve that. I aced and passed all 9 assessments 3 pre trips
3 driving and 3 backing assessments there where a few additional items on there pre trip from yours to there's but you gave a great example and I listened to it over and over and over and it worked thank you again for your info
@@johnnyhall919 hey I'm glad it helped
what DC are you running out of??
I finished onboarding yesterday in Seymour,IN. One thing to note is that if your fifth wheel touches the trailer before getting back out to check height, it is an instant fail. Also checking the gap between fifth wheel and trailer apron is a major. And spinning the landing gear with your fingers is a fail.
@@Sbowling1979 Thank you for that information.
Dang, not spinning the landing gear with my fingers might get me…it’s instinct to do that cuz 99% of the handles suck
I go to Seymour in 3 weeks for onboarding. That's helpful advice. Anything else about the testing there to look out for? Any tricky turns in the road test?

Also, is this standard test for the day cabs I see for Walmart as well? Do you have any info on why you would use a daycab at Walmart? I’m based in shippensburg pa and see a mix all all types of Walmart guys
@@danielstefanisko2731 Thank you for the kind words. I'm happy that somebody is getting something out of these videos.
Yes you would pre-trip a day cab the same way. But only sleepers are used at onboarding.
We use daycabs here for drivers that go home daily. They're also used for stores and locations that are very tight and limited in maneuvering room, making the driver's job easier and safer.

Hey rich, thanks for making these videos. They have been very helpful for me in making the decision to apply with the associate driving program. I have a question. How do drivers handle a family emergency while out on the road?
@@derrickmcelveen9674 You simply inform the coordinators of your problem, and they'll figure out a way to get you either home or back to your DC.

Hey Rich!! How often do you placard a hazmat load if ever?
@@grizzstud22 I have yet to do a placarded hazmat load in the 5 years I've been here. The most I've ever seen on one trailer is like 30 lb of Bic lighters, propane tanks, or something similar. To be fair, I pull mostly from a grocery DC. Other DC's may have more placarded loads than us.
Can we actually say abc’s and what about crossmembers as well as tire pressure gauge?
@@fhonez7295 the actual phrasing is going to depend on what the instructors at your onboarding want. Most will allow "ABC's" or something similar. The important thing to remember now is the process. Phrasing can come once you're there.
Funny note i dont lnow what it is but walmart send me an email to set up a phone interview. Dont know if its coincidence but the algorithm in my phone is taking me to walmart ads on you tube and walmart channels.

I've been at Walmart for 19 years at 6040. I'm thinking about joining the program. I am a little hesitant as a woman. I feel a tug to give it a try. Idk.
@@marquitanorfleet2603 There's nothing to be hesitant about. The days of it being challenging for women are long gone. I think the more important thing to be concerned about are the lifestyle changes that may come with the job. Potentially longer hours or not being home for days, depending on the schedule you get. The money and stability is really nice. Lots to consider.
@getrichwalmart Thank you so much. I've applied for the ATD program. Now, I'll just have to wait and see what God has to say about my decision.
I’m starting onboarding sept 2nd. Do you do a pre trip every skill day? Or only once and then the days of backing and forward driving you just do the skills and no pre trip before?
@@nathangeist3181 you do driving, backing, and pretrip assessments each day tue, wed, & thu. 9 total assessments. If you fail 5 by Wed you're out.
In total, you need to pass 3 driving, 2 backing, and 1 pretrip by thu to advance, and all 3 on thu. Some may need to return Fri for a final assessment if needed.

Do they allow you to stay late and practice the pre trip
@@grizzstud22 generally no, you're bussed back to the hotel afterwards. You should really have it learned before you get here. I don't know if you'll have time for after-hours practice
I've heard if you have other classmates the best thing to do is to get with them and practice while you're at the hotel
Hi Rich, what are the most common schedules drivers receive? Wondering if the 5-2/5-3 is pretty standard.
@@theflood24 at my DC, the most common is a regular 5/2, with 5/2-5/3 running 2nd. When you first start out at a DC however, your chances of being put into a 5/2-5/3 or similar program are probably greater. This may also change from DC to DC
@@getrichwalmart thank you for the info. I’ve had my cdl for close to 5 years. Working 70+hours a week, 6 days a week for a local company. Very good company but not enough money. There is a Walmart DC about 5 miles from me so I have been intrigued for a while.
@@theflood24 being that close, I'd be all over it. With seniority, you'll fall into whatever schedule you want. Better to start sooner than later.
I'm putting out a video on PTO next week. That and the pay are the two biggest reasons I came to Walmart. Hard to beat it
@@getrichwalmart I don’t want to ask you questions that you might have already answered in prior videos but I’m curious about the actual otr training period. Typically how long are you on the road with someone before you get your own truck, and is the pay during that time pretty good as well?
@@theflood24 the onboarding and orientation period is typically around two weeks, and is paid at $240 per day or $24 per hour, last I checked. The OTR training (mentorship) period is also two weeks. You are paid mileage and activity pay as a regular driver during mentorship.
do they ever place a defect to see if you notice? Looks thorough to me.

Hey I have a question about the pre trip. If I forget a part, let’s say on the tractor. Im already connected to the trailer and on the trailer pre trip. At the end of the trailer pre trip will the instructors allow us to go back to the tractor to get the missing part we remembered?
Even though we completed the tractor inspection
@@PlanetPaper-km4bk yes, as long as you complete it in 30 minutes you can go back for something you missed
Just a little update… I just finished Red Bluff and we had to complete the tractor FIRST… I started with the “In-Cab” inspection, then the outside and passed the complete inspection with plenty of time left on the clock… I can’t stress this enough, WATCH this video as much as you can, I mean to the point of falling asleep to it!!! @@bcmpbll220 yes. They give you like 90 or 120 days after you're hired to get your hazmat endorsement
I start my Walmart trucking school in a couple of weeks. Any advice?
@@technoutopia4687 mostly just practice your pretrip. That's the hardest part. The rest is just backing and driving. Watch my onboarding video to see what it's like. Good luck!
Thanks Rich, I will do that. Hopefully I’ll see you in the break room one day
I'm looking forward to it!
Nice video Rick. A couple points that I’d like to make. What is on the 4 sides of the trailer? When I did onboarding, I also missed the hazardous placard holders and the snap pins that worked. Also, what is not on the list (i don’t know if it is included now or not included)
With the hood open, I did move the hood and told the tester the hood stays in place by the hydraulic polls and the inner light housing chambers are in place and not moving also, the interior or behind the hood shows no damage. Back then, the tester said what I checked behind the hood was not on the list but they appreciated the extra check.
When I did my onboarding,
I practiced my pre trip while I was in my hotel room a few times to remember what I needed to check (tried to emulate the pre trip by memory). Hope that information helps others who do onboarding. Heed Rick’s advice and mine and you all will be just fine. Watch the testers, take your notes, show them that you’re invested in the information that you’re hearing and do the pre trip just like they do. That how I did it and I made it in to Walmart and have been here for a few years.
What's yall Paperwork like?
@@mr.ComnandoSpawn Can you be more specific? If you're talking about trip paperwork, that depends on the trip. For mixed grocery loads, the trip paperwork is most often only two pages. One is the trip sheet with trip#, stops, weight, etc. The other is a seal card, tracking seal integrity throughout the trip.
For GM loads, there is a BOL showing type and amount of hazmat units, if any. There's a seal card on these trips, as well.
That's pretty much it.
Backhaul paperwork varies wildly.
