  • The American composer, Benjamin Lees (1924-2010) wrote extensively in all genres. Many of his works have been commercially recorded. Surprisingly, his Concerto for Woodwind Quintet & Orchestra is not one of them.
This recording from April 1981 features the Cleveland Orchestra's principal woodwind players: Maurice Sharp, flute; John Mack, oboe; Frank Cohen clarinet; George Gossly, bassoon & Richard Solice, French horn. The Cleveland Orchestra is conducted by Lorin Maazel.

This is a delightful work by one of my favorite American composers. Lees' upbeat Concerto has just the right amount of humor, thanks to his deft use of the bassoon in the final two movements, but he begins with a sober and substantial first movement which doesn't throw the work out of balance, something a lesser composer might easily have done.
