- This is my Ladybeard's reaction to watching BAND-MAID / Shambles (Official Music Video) for the first time.
Richard Magarey is an Australian stuntman, professional wrestler, singer and online streamer, known for his bearded crossdressing persona named Ladybeard. He is currently vocalist of the band Babybeard, formerly with the band Ladybaby and Deadlift Lolita.

I remember Ladybeard from the days of Ladybaby and Nippon Manju. It was a classic among reaction videos from years ago. It must be surprising to him to have met Band Maid in 2013 and to find them along the way, over the years, in their unstoppable evolution to what they are now. Thanks Joel!

Joel, I certainly hope you told your friend that Band Maid performed at Lallapalooza last year. As I'm sure you know how big Lallapalooza is for any band.

Besides acoustic studio live sessions, they did Band Maiko, with some use of traditional sounds, videos in kimonos etc. Originally an April Fool’s release iirc
Joel, I think you were remembering their Christmas acoustic work while Ladybeard was thinking of their Band Maiko releases.
And their sound certainly evolves with each year.
2014 was mostly standard sounding pop rock, while their current sound is heavily influenced by Kanami’s Eventide harmonizer tones.

First of all, yes they did acoustic, in particular their Xmas concert from 2021 where they were not in their maid outfits, but that is NOT with them changing their name. You are thinking of their April Fool's Day prank from 2018 where they announced they were changing their name to "Band-Maiko" where they ditched the maid outfits and dressed instead as "maiko" (geisha in training) and then re-released an entire album with songs re-recorded but introducing some traditional instrumentation (along with their usual heavy guitars and drums) and with Saiki singing the lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. The "single" they released from that album was "Secret Maiko Lips" (a rendition of Secret My Lips). It was so popular that the next year they released another Band Maiko song, this time an original, called "Gion-cho" (a traditional neighborhood in Kyoto). Band Maiko was NOT an acoustic project.
Lady beard is good friends with Murata Tamu, the drummer for Nemophila.
They did a bunch of stuff together.
Ladybeard wore a maid outfit in the music video "Nippon manju"

I think that Band Maid's pure brilliance can make some other artists feel a bit sheepish. I mean they are a hard act to follow. Thanks for spreading the gospel Joel. Rock on 🤘
He was rather "sheepish" in his whole reaction. I wonder if he has always seen Band-Maid as a threat/rival.?.?. Recentment??? I mean, he's in his 3rd band/incarnation - ( LadyBaby, Deadlift Lolita and now BabyBeard.) compared to B-M's singular recorded incarnation. As a fellow Aussie to Ladybeard, he has always put out "Alternative" vibes (and I don't mean music). I can't take him seriously. I know that he refuses to talk about his time in LadyBaby. Why?? Can't put my finger on it......

If his show is relatively close, I will see him.

Ladybeard was thinking of Band-Maiko. I know this guy from Ladybaby, who had the model/idol/singer Rei Kuromiya in it. I loved her, her sister Aya and guitarist Hinako in the band "BRATS. They were a Powerhouse that slowly slipped into obscurity ever since Hinako left the band. "Ms Downer" "No More No More" and "Forget Me Not" were favorites.
Ladybaby was a trip and combined hard metal with Kawaii Idol pop, haven't watched anything since Rei left, she's my favorite.
Immediate like.

Band Maid's sound evolves every album. Just Bring It/Domination/Conqueror had a bit if a similar sound, that I think most would still consider their "core" sound, before that trended poppier on average, especially pre Thrill. Starting with Unseen World, I think they have gotten harder/faster/more experimental with their style, in ways that sometimes are IMO a bit more challenging to the ear. This is a bit of a throwback to the Warning style of track, IMO, a bit more straightforward in composition, but with some added effects.
Still have yet to see Kanami set a foot wrong as a songwriter, when taking the tracks individually, but I am hoping there is a bit more tempo variety on the upcoming LP, as Unseen World can be a bit exhausting to take in as a whole in one sitting.
I liked the way Ladybeard incorporated wrestling into his concerts, does he do that with BABYBEARD?
The fact that he played a show with them in 2014 and hasn't checked them out in recent years, him wondering if they've mixed their sound up is probably just him remembering their pop, pop/rock, rock sound as opposed to their recent anime/ prog-rock sound.
Ah! So, LADYBEARD did not really know about BAND-MAID's more modern stuff at all. Then he has lots of fun to come if he chooses to take notice.

Good Heavens, this is Band Maid, dear boy...back to the Research Room for you. Now, the next time that you have LB on the show, have him tell you his "off stage" story from Japan regarding an agitated, vociferous Japanese fellow who was shouting seemingly threatening things at him (the fun is in the backstory he got from an employee of the venue regarding this loud fellow and his stand on Westerners getting to know Japanese women "more intimately").
What kind of fan are you? You confuse the Acoustic stuff with BAND-MAIKO? You need to go back a take a refresher course, maybe Orenji's documentaries.

Hmm, I wonder if if you might be thinking of Wagakki Band? They combine traditional folk music with metal. While playing traditional instruments & are bad ass as f****!! I'm not sure it was them, but they have done something similar to what you're referring to. :)

Yes, but it really caught on and they released an album.
No live shows though.
The only time they’ve performed Band-Maiko songs live was that one show in Kyoto with the stained glass looking backdrop.
