- Setting up our game's steam page, learning the ropes, and creating a TONNE of graphical assets at random sizes. We've been developing our game for over 2 years now, and in this devlog I'll talk about what it's like to be a solo indie gamedev launching a game on steam.

Go wishlist the game!

Thanks. 😉
wishlisted, super excited
To add insult to injury, you need to make a front page image, in case you win game of the year or a steam award. Which, let's be honest, none of us are getting,
So many different images. 😩
The art for the steam page looks amazing, can't wait for the full game to release!
Art did a great job! Looking forward to launching the game. 😎
A good way to test the minimal resources needed for your game, is to run it on a virtual machine with the lowest possible performance and then increasing as needed, you'll be able to see how low or high in resources your game needs to run then
Hey, for your screenshots: Include the HUD to highlight the game's complexity and make it clear it's not just another mobile game. And add more background variety or different scenes; it kinda seems like the game is all in one map, feels short.
Currently it is all in 1 map. 😅
As we add more room variety and more enemies, we'll add more screenshots of cool things to the page. Right now there's a lot in the game with old art, so that needs to be swapped out first. 🤔
Wow! Looks incredible! Also this video is really funny 🤣 Congratulations on setting up your Steam page!
Wishlisted. And i am so ready to make videos on this beautiful game
"random games that nobody had ever heard of"
Me: sees 20 mins till dawn and Brotato...
just like me fr
Fair.🤣
There were some bangers in there, but I meant the ones in between those. The new "games like this" is almost entirely made up of popular indie games that are more similar to what our game is trying to be. 👍
Great job! Glad to hear you appreciated having your game officially on Steam :) It's such a great feeling!
HUGE step forward! Wish y'all luck :)
Amazing!! The store page looks better than some AAA games, props to artmanoil! Wishing you luck with the launch!
Thanks! 😎
this was very informative!
hi I'm making games in gdevelop too, and wanted to tell you that I got inspired by your work and you are the reason i got into game dev so keep up the good work 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I got on to RUclips and saw this video's thumbnail and title, and I went straight to steam and wishlisted the game!
Thanks! 🥳
Pretty awesome that I’ll be able to have spent shells in my steam library in the coming future. The hard work is showing, keep at it!
Ohhh boy am I looking forward to this game releasing :D
Great job, looks very fun!
Wishlisted :P
When you watch a steam video, you want to see mechanics, to project yourself gaming and know it will be fun.
Congrats on the huge step !!!
Just discovered your channel. Subscribed and wishlisted. Great pixel art/animations, and mechanics look like they feel responsive. I enjoy supporting other game devs - in for the ride.
How did I manage to post a discussion before HelperWesley? Will there be a tutorial on "Steam Achievements"? in the future? Will you be adding achievements to the game?
I would definitely like to add achievement, we'll see. 👍
idk about a tutorial. 🤔
Once I am able to wishlist I will
Quality stuff Wes
Anytime i see only animation i just go off. Animation is fine, if you combine with gameplay footage as well, because it show a crude portion of the game, you can kinda really hype the gameplay, i prefer crude gameplay, but some people do scripted in game scene that is much better than animation only. What i kinda find interesting is show some features of early game and flash to more advanced stuff that not allow the spectator fully broke the game from the trailer, but at least has a pick of what he is getting. In your case, how a man without guns and characters entering naked on the dungeon, making shot to shot, them show some better weapon, kinda of a shotgun or others stuff, a fewer times than first portion, them show a fast stage with better equipment and buffs with tons of projectiles arround and not even need to show a boss, maybe mini boss will be fine to pass the danger and adventure the game has to offer
It’s always a great day when Wes uploads :)
oh you're the Dev of Revita, I added this game to my wishlist few months ago. Very nice
Oh no no. Revita was developed by BenStar, not me.
But thanks for the wishlist. 👍
@@HelperWesley I see lol
I really enjoy those videos. makes me wanna jump into game dev as well.. you are really an inspiring dude
Glad I can help. 😉
Great video! I feel like there should be a Steam achievement called "Killing Clouds".
Congrats on setting-up the Store page. So far we released games only for Android so I didn't try it myself but I bet it's complicated. Wishlisting now
Thanks! And yeah it was a lot more complicated than releasing on Google play was. And so far we only have the store page up, pushing the game to live has its own lost of hurdles to get over. 😅
this looks really fun
Minor idea: give the guns unique names. Ya know how games rename guns so they can be unique to theirs game, you should do this.
My name ideas:
Revolver: Ol'Reliable
SubMachine: Havok
Sniper: Peacekeeper
Barb Gun: The Barber
Shotgun: Butcher 12
That is a good idea. 👀
Yaaaaas! Wishlistingggg
Steam Page looks great! And it's not exact science, so think the Indie tag works fine but a little saturated, most importantly you got the right recommendations. Good Luck🍀
Yaaaaay new devlog
bro that ADHD part is beyond relatable 💀
cool vid ill wishlist
I think you made the right choice with the game tags. I see the similar games on your page recommended to me are… Binding of Isaac, Realm of the Mad God Exalt, Dead Cells, Noita, etc. I definitely wouldn’t sweat about the “Rogue-like”/ “Rogue-Like-like”/ "Rouge-Lite" semantics. Most people don’t know the difference.
More importantly. Most people don't care.
0:07 i’m literally in the video omg
💪 You and me both!
games nobody had ever heard of "brotato" or "nova drift"
literally indie gems but nvm
There, I wishlisted it (we need this game to be very wishlisted).
Thanks. 😎
The worst thing people can do is listen to bad advice from other indie devs who never had a real hit game or don't "work for Valve" (ie. don't have actual insider info on how anything works behind the scenes).... Don't assume there's a standard conversion rate of wishlists to sales. Don't assume an x amount of reviews converts to x amount of sales or higher steam store visibility. And don't assume RUclipsrs actually get their primary income from selling their game, instead of say selling game dev courses or receiving ad revenue from RUclips videos. In some cases those people make more from RUclips than they ever would from their games. I would be extremely careful about what advice to follow, because there's so much false information out there it is crazy. Think; people who claim indie games compete with triple A launches (they never did, trust me). Or how some game devs will blame poor launch timing or low review amounts for their underperforming game, instead of taking a critical look at the selling price they picked for their game. Or indeed how the game itself is simply kind of mediocre all around. Especially in oversaturated genres, a game needs to be good for gamers to pick it up at a non-free pricepoint. And most indie games compete directly with discounted or older indie games out there. Not to mention how a niche-within-a-niche-within-a-niche game will never ever sell a million copies. Game's like Disco Elysium are the very extreme outlier here. And a dime in a dozen clone of an existing game or game type, might not sell any copies. Yes, every indie game devs nightmare, but it's a real chance. It's why the best advice people can give is to focus on potential buyers / gamers when it comes to presenting your indie game on RUclips. Yes, fellow game devs will be interested in devlog content, but will they buy your game? Probably not.
I agree with basically everything here except for the "indie games can't compete with triple A" thing outside of sales values with the exception of a few outliers or time between releases, but in terms of quality or fun Indie can compete with triple A, but you probably meant sales numbers/money earned, in which case, yeah, I agree with that too.
I’ll hijack your thread and add that the idea “graphics isn’t everything” is also poison to a young dev’s mind. Yes. A game can sell many copies and be very successful with a damn ASCII tileset. But if you want the best chances of success… investing in quality art assets is one of the best levers you can pull in that department idgaf what anyone says. Yes art assets cost time. But brother they are cost effective. Especially if you go with stylized/low-poly/licensed packs. The amount of indie games with garbage tier art assets is laughable. Everyone says oh it’s so hard oh it takes so much luck. I’ll agree with hard but not luck. If your game is good, unique, fun, and attractive people will buy it. If it isn’t? Reduce the price. Because all of those qualities are relative to the price. Rant over
@@styxrakash4639 Graphics aren't everything, you can make a super fun game with Squares and have people play it, but they do help a lot.
Wooow! ❤ this is so true! I am making a game .... and I really see "behind the scenes" .... quality and good idea are best chances to even been seen.
@@alu2901 I am not arguing that they are everything. If graphics were everything you'd be in the realm of Films, what makes games unique is player input - I agree gameplay is chief among all, few can deny this. However, when I see indie games that sold poorly the largest deficiency I can find is often its graphics. This is why I think that it is good advice to indie devs. And why "graphics aren't everything" is a cope and bad advice to someone starting out. Art and Visuals are important. I say this is a coder who is bad at art and has a bunch of fun but ugly games wasting away in private
FINALYYY😁
OMG you can do GST registration for business over the phone now? We used to have to go in person on some kiosk in the middle of nowhere, near Mississauga or whatever.
You're actually supposed to be able to do it online now, but the online service was down and I had to call in to do it.
Going in physically sounds awful. 😅
i have now one goal and dream in my life... make my own pixilated games using only gdevelop as game engine but i really wish i had some time to do since its my school year... btw i really wish your game would go boom, youve put a lot of effort of making it. good luck!
Your experience with ChatGPT is exactly as it should be. (And i think maybe even intented to be?) Just a jumping of point.
Art uses GIMP
I use GIMP 💪
Art actually uses Krita for most of their art.
I use krita for my stuff since I love all the layer settings
@@artmanoil still open source! Nice!
Not sure if you know or not (or mention in the vid)
But when you "release" a game on steam, I'm pretty sure they have to approve the launch. So just be aware of that when you have a release date
100%, we'll plan to get it approved well before the actual launch date. 👍
pog
Congrats!
I'm strategicly camping to appear on the video
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of business did you need to register for (in Canada) in order to progress to signing up for the SteamWorks account? Do you have any recommendations for resources to follow in doing this? Definitely inspired by this video.
The game is looking great! Wishlisted :D
Put a video of 2 minutes of gameplay with no cut as a placeholder for now !
As soon as we get the enemies all swapped out. I'm afraid the old art will look really weird next to the new art. 😅
roguelike-y or more like roguelike-ish
I would take that what looks better.
I'm not sure which one I like more. 🤔
I might switch it later.
@@HelperWesley I am sure you will take the right desicion ;)
Having animation on the trailer isn't bad, but it's a requirement to have at least bits of gameplay showing the main mechanics of your game.
What makes this different than the 1000s of other roguelikes on steam?
This one was made by me. 👍😉
1 day club
what's up with the last sentence of the description on Steam?
Each run ea...
Nuclear throne, and a couple other popular indie games did that with their descriptions. The rest of the description is in the about game section on the page. 👍
Dude I need your help. The melee combat video has a problem, I press the w key, it doesn't play the animation. It just stays in one frame. Please do another video
wow
Ok wishlisted, now please stop whistling and continue with the video!
🤣
please add dash animation.
Any ideas on how much the game will cost?
Somewhere between 5-25 dollars, the usual indie game range. 😅
We'll spend some time figuring out exactly what is fair as we get closer to launch.
Is this game actually gonna release April 15th, 2024?
Somewhere around there, if all goes well.
But publicly the release date is Q2 2024. We'll be more sure as we get closer.
Hello! Next vid when?
This week hopefully. 🤞
Keep meaning to work on it, but something always comes up. lol.
I looked at your Steam Page and I wishlisted it. Let me say something. I wishlisted it because I saw your Vids over the time about the game and I think its a great game. But when I would be someone who don't know you and your videos I would not wishlist it or buy it. Because the Pictures you have on your Steam Page look boring. I don't want to hate and my english is not that good so I try to explain:
at this moment on your Steam page there are just pictures of the game in one Biom or more like with the one grey background/Floor. This looks bland and boring. You have to do there something. Besides that I hope the game will have in generel different Backgrounds/floors. There have to be much more colors.
Make a picture from abilities, ultimates or something. Put in a picture of the hub or at least the big gate in the hub. Because the hub area looks interesting and is colorful. Then the people get curious and more addicted to the game alone from seeing the pictures.
I hope you know what I mean. Sry for my bad english.
hey, im from turkiye and the minimum wage here is about 400 dollars, can you make local pricing for such countries so we can enjoy the game without cracking it? i mean if its gonna be 10$ maybe make it 5 for turkiye, it'll still be expensive for us but atleast its something. 5x30 = 150 turkish lira
I will have to look in to and learn more about that. I'll probably follow the example of other indie games around the same price as ours.(Whatever that price is)
-... Aaaaand this video proves how and why no one knows what genres are anymore. Everything is just marketing and buzzwords and someone make this rollercoaster of stupid stop, plz. :v-
... I mean, nice Steam page. Very polished. 👍
When's the next vid coming out?
Soon. 😅
YIPPEE!! 😁@@HelperWesley

I’m definitely buying this lol. This guy single handily sparked my game dev journey. I really hope this become super successful. Please market this super hard helperwesley. I want this to succeed, it’s a very polished game so far.
