  • On April 27, 1978-a sunny spring afternoon in the San Fernando Valley-an art student named Jeffrey Vallance purchased a frozen chicken from the supermarket and drove it to the Los Angeles Pet Cemetery for its funeral. He took pictures, saved the receipts, and put it all in a book. The bird's name was Blinky, The Friendly Hen, and within months his death would bring the young Vallance national attention.
As a satire of suburbia, Blinky, The Friendly Hen lives not only through performance, but the documentation that Vallance would turn into art objects: a memorable portrait of the frozen chicken, sweating in a satin-lined casket; its original wrapping paper, recasted by Vallance as his own Shroud of Turin. Decades after Vallance's "prank" at the cemetery, it is these objects that embody his conflation of religion and commerce, the sacred and the profane.
For the 35th anniversary of Blinky, The Friendly Hen, Vallance discusses his most famous performance with MOCAtv-including his appearance on Late Night with David Letterman-and returns to the grave to pay his respects. It remains open to the public, seven days a week.

As a video editor in Los Angeles, I get to do a whole bunch of 'different' projects. One day in 1988, these two guys came in to master their documentary. Jeffrey, it has affected me ever since. The Digital master still looks great.

Hope the show this weekend will be a huge success and some of us will become vegeetarians thinking about Blinky.

I think it may be time for the resurrection of Blinky. Would that take it too far?
