Episode 42: Hixxy, 4/4: Tackling hardcore’s well-publicised controversies & the return of Bonkers!

  • ROAR's in-depth four-part interview with HIXXY rounds up as we get the four-beat happy hardcore don’s take on the current upfront hardcore scene after a difficult year of not playing out, why it’s ended up where it is, and where it might go next after the pandemic is over.
Hixxy - AKA Ian Hicks - also takes a load of your questions. They include passionately rejecting claims hardcore was somehow a closed shop, and addressing the sensitive subject of the high-profile fallout between his old friends, leading hardcore duo DJ SY and MC STORM, who a number of years ago went their separate ways in controversial circumstances, which he describes as the “lowest point” of his career.
Finally, Ian insists he’s got no plans to ever retire from the hard dance scene and drops the exclusive bombshell that BONKERS is to return! (At least it would have been exclusive had SHARKEY not subsequently mentioned it on Facebook, the git!)
Up next, this Friday, is an interview with legendary ORANGE/ISOTONIK DJ, producer, popstar and promoter, CHRIS PAUL...who’s got bags of great stories to tell.

I think a big difference from what I observed was that alot of the older established Happy Hardcore artist, and ravers /promoters walked away from scene. People like Hixxy stuck with it.

As a jungle head Tom you might see lots of new names on flyers for nights, but not many of them are any good. There's too much competition nowadays, DJs are more interested in selling their merch and clothing than writing original new good banging tracks. That's not their fault they make more money from sales than music. IF you're all looking for someone to blame it's music industry suits, all take a massive cut and no one buys tracks anymore they download them now.

Another thing is the term “hardcore” should be what is now “dnb”
. The hardcore we have now is essentially/technicallly/whatever short for “hardcore techno”. The junglists dropped the term and the 4beats picked it up. A bit like there is hardcore punk but its a different type of hardcore. Its just a descriptive media term and sort of related but not lol

How good would it be to get Dj Sy on and hear his side of the story and Mc Storm and hear his side? I did a little bit of digging and the only person I can find online making these accusations was Mc Storm. If its true its awful but if its not true it really is a shame that such a legends name had been tarnished this way with pretty damaging accusations.

I think Andy would say he regretted seeing taking over the Bowlers Techno room as North's next step after leaving The Void. As much as I loved Bowlers in it's own right it was never the same.
Ha! Fun fact. A good while ago now I was heading south on the M6 with one of the many old North sets I've got on my phone playing when I decided randomly to go and have a nosey at how it looks now it's just a car park. The chills as I got close and then turned into Glass Street were unreal! I parked up across the road, went and got a coffee and just sat chilling in the car looking across at where all those memories took place.

Tom and the team fantastic interviewing hixxy and great that you asked about the sy/storm question and hixxy handled it very well quite sad about the whole situation really
Moving forward for hardcore would be keeping it underground and not commercial as at some events you had knobs there where when underground you had ravers that loved the music and had nothing love and peace, but I think if you want to push on I think hardcore events needs to be at small venues 250 capacity social clubs/smaller clubs as the big venues I think are long away off yet, the issue is DJs /mcs and there cost to perform I understand it’s there full time job but if you have a club that holds 250 you can’t really charge more then a £5/8 , to get in,it works both ways, but I genuinely believe if it was regular up and down the country a DJ could end up doing 2/3 gigs on a Friday/Saturday and it be worth while. It be interesting to ask the DJs/mcs would you agree a fee depending on the capacity and entrance fee, if so I can really see more and events happening, but if a artist is a set fee that will rule them out to be booked. Also new promoters would be willing to push the scene on. I have always came back to hardcore in my years as it special to me, and I think it’s important to ask these questions to the DJs/mcs as I hope they would of understood what impact the pandemic has really affected a stale scene.
Again fantastic work from everyone at ROAR
