The counter argument is you are buying a Mini Cooper underneath with a Kia sedan design for a lot more money. I would rather have the Mini. This 2 series is one of the most uninspired designs going around. BMW needs to be premium, this is not.
Because the design of the Series 2 is disproportionate. The car is tall relative to its width, the door line is high, the distance from the front axle to the front bumper is long, the length is disproportionate to the car’s height, and the front lights resemble those of its sibling model. Kia desing or anything fwd car. Additionally, the hood line does not align with the door line but is significantly higher. A true design mess.
The hood and window line not aligning is a very common thing, it's on most of the cars. It's the same for the 3 series, Mercedes C class, Audi A3, A4, VW Passat and a lot more. Maybe it's just a bit more visible on this car.
I understand what you mean, but yes, it is more visible, maybe because of the smaller size of the car compared to the 3-series. Also, the FWD design might impact the engine hood upper line, which is significantly taller than the door line. It would be interesting to see a long video about car design, showing how the design follows function and whether the function prioritizes safety, aesthetics, or technical aspects.
The reviews that you and Leah make are excellent. Very detailed, thorough easy to understand, and very conversational. Very early Frohe Weihnacheten wishes to you all!
BMW does come with one of the better infotainment systems I guess for people who want the BMW brand cachet and a well above average driving dynamics vehicle with pep, but with a budget, this is the BMW to spring for. I would rather get a slightly used M340xi as M Sport Differential is standard and four-doors is most convenient.

Front of the car is disappointing. Not very asthetically designed. Front looks like hiding new design wallpaper underneath. Small headlights ratio to bonnet size.
I can't agree that a shorter wheelbase car has "better driving dynamics", true it's more nippy in bends but that doesn't mean _better_ drive - certainly not ride. It think this car would be better if it had a combi/estate or even lift-back version as a saloon is quite limiting so best stick with a 1-Series [outside of US], indeed with the last gen even though the interiors of the 1-series & 2-series GC both looked identical, the 1er felt more comfortable. In any case i would NOT spend any money on a modern BMW - 1, 2 or 3 series - as these cars feel cheap and lacking in soul, newbies to the brand maybe be fooled by the superficial luxury and flashy gimmicks but they're no longer truly "premium", and FWD based platform is disappointing, yes it's ok around at speeds but wheelspin when accelerating from a standstill at lights or junctions is so annoying. I do admit their engines are good, though.
Don't mind the exterior at all, it's the interior that I don't like. It's 'clean' and modern but a bit vacant at the same time. Those screens just don't do it for me and I prefer the prior generation. I don't mind the bigger screens on the more expensive models, but these smaller ones feel a little bit budget.
I just wanted to make that comment. So called tiger nose. Eh good old bmw is gone. New models ugly double screen on the dash, new series is hideous. The last nice model is 3 series 2019 before face-lift
Thankfully you don't need to get the nose fully black, in the standard m sport trim the silver surround separates the two kidneys and it looks less like a Kia
Just look at the size of a 3 series of 40 years ago, the current series 3 are the size of a 5 series of 40 years ago and the current 5 series are the size of a 7 series of 40 years😊
Nice car it has the old 3-Series size which is not too small not too big just right that's why people buy it I think. Not too keen on that color it looks like a gelato icecream color to me too bright for my taste. The performance is pretty good for a small 3 cylinder engine , in fact it's pretty impressive the acceleration . Looks like very fun car to drive . Great review detailed as always Thomas. Have a good one , Ciao , ciao !
People complaining about the interior must be young, because just thinking in comparison to like 15 years ago to cars in this category this interior is very good. And to about 20 to 30 years ago this interior is fantastic.
The screens look pretty cheap to me, a few analog gauges and proper switchgear would go a long way to bringing some substance to this somewhat econobox interior.
Quite simply it is the small sports saloon that the 3 series used to be. Shame about the styling though which does not match it's price tag and has no BMW heritage.
I had a few 1 (3 or 5 doors) and 2 Coupé with the rear wheel drive, it was so fun thanks to the short wheel base. I also appreciated the added comfort of my previous 4 Gran Coupé, also with more space for the passengers (1 and 2 are cars for singles !), and a larger trunk. My next one will be a 420d or the i4 😊
The only reason people take this over the 3 series is because this is cheaper.😂😂 it’s ugly, and it’s a front wheel drive car. There’s no reason you would want this other than you just want a box to get you from A to B
I’m currently doing a 450 mile commute in an old Mazda. Thinking about replacing it with one of these. Was originally thinking an older z3 would be more fun but I’d be able to stick the kids in this when I’m home.
It is hard to look at this thing. Hardly anything to identify it as a BMW. Why can't they make their FWD cars with a more teutonic 3 box design, that hood height and angle is horrid.
I would take the 3er any day over this. The last bmw looking bmw limousine. Its not that this car is not just not beautiful but it also looks nothing likeca bmw. Which is really a first. But my question to you thomas is what you think of bmw putting a M logo on every car now? Doesn't it depreciate a true m?
I kinda find the 2 series grand coupe wrongly placed in the market. The same goes for the A3/S3/RS3 Sedan. They are like very short sedans. I get the gist about wanting to have a lightweight car, but even as a bigger car I think its not hard to get the weight low. The BMW F30 was a perfectly sized compact class Sportssedan with 4,63m length and 2,81m wheelbase. I generally like comfortable cars more than sporty ones and found my F30 tbh also very sporty even if it didn't had the M Sport drivetrain. Currently the only compact class vehicles that are from interest as a sedan ish form are either: A wagon: Golf 8 Variant R-Line with 1.5 eTSi, Mercedes Benz CLA as a Coupe or Shooting Brake. Anything else seems to compete against their own company brothers and make 0 sense.
So it's smaller but weighs about the same as a 3 series. Why.. whyyyyyyy.... and why isn't it rear wheel biased. If it was lighter and rear wheel biased, I would have forgiven its bland eco looks. Disappointment BMW
@1:35 whether the engine is 3 or 4 cylinder or even 5 or 6 cylinder there will be no effect in the length of the car since the engine is transverse mounted. Just fyi.
@@autogefuehl there is no 6 cylinder option in this model yes, I just used that as an example to explain that the cylinder count, as long as it is an inline and not a V, does not affect the length of the vehicle if it is in a transverse layout. The inline engine grows sideways (west to east) as the cylinder count increases, so in theory it is the width of the vehicle that would be affected, not the length. Transverse inline 6 layout is not available from BMW but it has been done before by other manufacturers. Volvo (before their Geely days) used to offer inline 4, inline 5 and inline 6 engines simultaneously in a transverse layout. Please excuse me posting this reply multiple times, on my phone it says the reply was not posted so I posted it again and again.
Boring! The problem for all the European manufacturers is that Chinese design is getting way more advanced in way shorter production cycles. And hence, unfortunately, the closure of factories all over the place.
It would be great if you could find a proper way to place the camera in the center of cars that don’t have a panoramic roof. If you remember, I was one of the first people to comment repeatedly back then, when all the videos were filmed with the camera on the side window. You listened, and I believe that was one of the reasons for the channel's growth. I think you could find a way to securely fix the camera in the center using the seat rods or other way.
Hi Thomas! In response to your rear turn signal being red in the US/Canadian market comment, while the US and Canada allow either red or amber rear turns signals, how it differs from the EU is that turn signals in the US/Canada also have to comply with a size requirement, and to more easily differentiate a turn signal when the brake lights and turn signals are both active. If you notice on the European spec version of the same car, the rear amber turn signal isn't as big as the rear red turn signal on the North American spec. 🙂
@@autogefuehl The pre-facelift Tesla Model 3 in the US/Canada had all red rear lights (except for the backup lights of course), and the brake light doubled as the turn signal (which is allowed in the US/Canada), which met the size requirement, and of course red is allowed in the US/Canada for rear turn signals.
This is also why those narrow strip LED sequential turn signal are not allowed in the US; archaic laws require that the initial "brightest flash" of the turn signal has to be a certain large size, and one little LED light being the first flash does not meet that size requirement. How this would meet US/Canadian law would be for the whole strip to flash first, and then it fades out sequentially, like on the EV Mustang.
I walked into the local BMW here in Port Macquarie a few years ago with a 200k au budget and the guy working didnt even come out of his office to talk for 25 mins. He didnt even aknowledge me though he did look me straight in the eyes. Maybe he thought i was just browsing as i was in low key casual dress. Anyways i ended up leaving and bought an Audi rs5 from their car yard 2 hrs away. Not hating on BMW as a company but their staff in Port macquarie need a serious servicing.
You are one of the best reviews of the cars . THOMAS please every car you review can you to measure the ground clearance of a car?? you can measure the distance from the lowest part of the car to the ground. 🙏 🙏 🙏 Thank you

The counter argument is you are buying a Mini Cooper underneath with a Kia sedan design for a lot more money. I would rather have the Mini. This 2 series is one of the most uninspired designs going around. BMW needs to be premium, this is not.
I really don't think anyone is going to make that choice. It looks like a discount store 3 series
Just a bait title for clicks. Looking at Sales Numbers, the 3 Series outsells the 2 Series Gran Coupe by a factor of x4 - x7 depending on the market.
I will take a 3 series every time over this 2 series monstrocity
Because the design of the Series 2 is disproportionate. The car is tall relative to its width, the door line is high, the distance from the front axle to the front bumper is long, the length is disproportionate to the car’s height, and the front lights resemble those of its sibling model. I'll never understand why manufacturers place charging ports right next to cupholders 🤦
True
So when you accidentally drip water into the charging port, dealership can charge you big money to fix it.

What is the length of the wheelbase?
The BMW designer responsible for this monstrosity went to RR. Maybe the 3 Series will be saved from his butchering
If the 1 series was still riding on a proper BMW platform it would indeed be an interest question. Considering it isn't there's nothing to see there.
The best thing about the car, without a doubt, the color, reminds me of Porsche's Miami blue.
As always, Great review

Can barely identify that as a BMW. Lights and grill used to be very distinct. Could be any car now
Nice Kia Ceed
That backend looks like something's missing - hasn't been fully assembled and the proper plastic bumper needs fitting
It's a better shape, and unlike the current senior models, they've not hit it with the ugly stick yet.
I don't get the front of BMWs these days. I should design it for them.
I dislike the headlights. So not BMW like. Please fire the entire design unit, hire designers that design in the line of the classic BMW cars.
The new turn signal "pulse" just look like something is broken
This m235 cannot compete in any way with the 2024 Audi S3 facelift... the Audi has much better looks, interior, sound, driving dynamics...
Kia Ceed
Hyundai I30 Fastback.

Absolutely not give me a 340i xdrive missile
Kia and bmw had a baby…
They dont…. How many do you see on the roads? Next to none. I rented one a few years back. Not better than a Golf R
I am thinking about it. The 228i is built in Germany. The 3 Series in Mexico. Somehow I trust German craftsmanship over Mexican craftsmanship.
Looks like a Ford Focus sedan...
Agree that car design works best when manufacturers aren’t shy about colors. This one looks exquisite 😍
Love that colour
So it's smaller but weighs about the same as a 3 series. Why.. whyyyyyyy.... and why isn't it rear wheel biased. If it was lighter and rear wheel biased, I would have forgiven its bland eco looks. Disappointment BMW
Looks beneath the expectation I’d demand from a BMW.
@1:35 whether the engine is 3 or 4 cylinder or even 5 or 6 cylinder there will be no effect in the length of the car since the engine is transverse mounted. Just fyi.
you cant put 6 cyl transverse in this one here
@@autogefuehl there is no 6 cylinder option in this model yes, I just used that as an example to explain that the cylinder count, as long as it is an inline and not a V, does not affect the length of the vehicle if it is in a transverse layout.
Yes, because of your repeated comments the channel.became successful. 😂
@@freeskier175 Because he listens , you dumb
Also interesting :) I wonder how the Tesla Model 3 could have such a small indicator before the facelift
or was it the brake light basically in the US?
Salespeople nowadays tend to ignore new customers once they have already met their monthly quota.
Sadly often its more about the service and the dealers than the cars
@@autogefuehl BMW are a beautiful car font get me wrong but I would never buy from an individual with no moral compass.
Especially 200k
BMW hired aliexpress to design their cars

I can't get over that toothpaste colour! Sorry Thomas :)
😂
This bmw gran coupe the base model or cupra terramar the base model in terms of beauty? 🤔
I want to give max 40 k for a luxurious car 🚗
You are one of the best reviews of the cars .
THOMAS please every car you review can you to measure the ground clearance of a car??
you can measure the distance from the lowest part of the car to the ground. 🙏 🙏 🙏
Thank you
thanks m8 !
Hmm its tricky to find the lowest part actually since it is often very much hidden underneath!
