Manuel, muchisimas gracias from the bottom of my heart! I am an elder native New Mexican gringa, taking a Chicano History class in Cupertino, CA. Your video was the star of the whole class... in 3 minutes you summed up what we've been laboring at for weeks... exploring history, but mostly trying to express what Chicano has meant, and what it means today. We are of course finding out it means so many different things to different people. But you have clearly plumbed your experiences, heart, and soul, resulting in an honest yet gracious expression of Chicanismo. And you pinned it -- boom -- right on the head! I hope your poetry is still flowing freely; you've got a real gift....
I look at our culture now and our young generation needs to listen to this! We forgot our roots who we are and what we stand for. Chicanismo needs to be revived.
My granddaughter called to ask about our culture for a paper a week ago. I asked, which one mija, Chicano or... Mexican (her grandfather, my husband). Her response..."Chicana, mama". I told her stories, we spoke for 3 hours...her with rapt attention, myself full of pride...and then...and then at the end, I referred her to THIS...to YOU. Gracias mi hermano.... from the bottom of my heart.... THANK YOU. For putting my feelings to words that I'll continue to look back on in perpetuity. Dios te bendiga.
Im 27 and im still tryna figure it out. All i know is im loud. Im browm. And im proud. Yo no pedi ser Chicano. Chale la neta es que simplemente, tuve suerte. I love my culture and im proud of my roots. Es chingon ser Chicano la verda. To all my frijoles, mucho amor y respeto de California. Viva nuestra raza🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
This poem is awesome, it really gave me chills! I'm studying it for my poetry class and I want to present it, but since I'm not a native speaker I am not sure I understand what he says from minute 0:47 to 0:56, can anyone help me? Thanks!
I don’t know if you have contact with Manuel but if you do tell him that he was the man who taught me my favorite art form! He did a class at capshaw in Santa Fe. This man is a hero in my eyes his words made me feel empowered. I recited this poem to a dominately white school with only one other Hispanic. To give him and I power and teach some white folk about our culture was amazing!!!
I remember being a brown kid going to an a mostly white dominated middle school and i would always get bullied and ridiculed for speaking Spanish and the teachers would tell me and my few Chicano friends to speak English only. And it really fucked with me. I didn't know if i should be more American than the white boys that would chase me and my baby sister down the block or if i should be more Mexican than the next foo to fit in. But no matter what i always stayed true. Im loud brown y Chicano hasta que muera. Que me llames indio no me da coraje🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
I respectfully disagree chicano if pride in your community and heritage even if it's not from mexico. I have many chicano brethren black white asian and brown dont forget it eh.
Reach Victoria It implies that for some I suppose; however, I feel it identified as a political ideology of Mexican&American Hispanos wanting to self label to bring about anti-establishment & awareness to the oppression/exploitation of Hispanos in the Southwestern United States. It's a pride for this Native Culture, but also Hispano-"mestizo" people's as a new Race...the cosmic race.
Then he says Chicano is the blood running through his veins from his ancestors what is his guy talking about first of all it's a border that separates us we are not from another continent geez get it together
thank you for this.. i'm still learning more of my history as a young Chicano.. something that should be taught more.
I come back to this poem, every week or two. Gonzalez message jump start that spark in my soul. So much power in words and language.
Its great!
I haven't called myself "chicano" in years but I might do so again after hearing this poet. Thanks!

So, Chicanismo is racial nationalism.
